The Bayformers movies committed a myriad of egregious sins but one that always stuck out to me was casting Hugo Weaving as Megatron when Frank Welker is right there. I even recall that in the mediocre 360 tie-in game Welker was back as Megatron and the opening of that level had him mockingly calling out "Prime...." and it gave me chills. What a dumb, pointless, and probably more expensive change!

I really wish whoever holds the game rights currently would grab the Cybertron games and Devastation from Activision because I'd love to have updated versions of those on switch, PC, etc.

The Bay movies did give us a Megatron character in the Universal parks, and I'm grateful to them for that alone. He is GOLD, has nearly free reign to roast guests as the voice actor sees fit at the moment. Dream job for me.

Somewhere between psychedelia and Dante's Inferno. And I was stone-cold sober too, I can only imagine what it'd be like if you were on something.

Also that the voice cast is stacked.

It's a great pub-quiz movie in a way too. Which movie has Orson Welles' last ever performance, recorded just five days before he died? This one.

Oh and the craziest part is those Autobots you see die in the movie are dead. Like, gone from the TV show and everything - that's wild for a series that like nearly every other cartoon at the time only existed at the grace of selling as many toys as possible.

Pour one out for fuckin Wheeljack man.

That was the whole point of the movie. Hasbro was going to introduce a bunch of new Transformers toys and was going to stop producing a bunch of old Transformers toys. So all those Transformers that they weren't going to make any more had to die.

The people making cartoons back then really did just see them as commercials and didn't yet understand that the target audience had, like, an actual emotional connection to the characters. So they didn't think killing off a bunch of toys that weren't going to be on the shelves any more was that big a deal.

I know exactly what you're getting at. I just can't help but think of the Friends joke about Chandler and Bambi.

"You didn't cry when Bambi's mother died?"
"Yes, it was very sad when the guy stopped drawing the deer."

I let my intrusive thoughts win and now i am impatiently waiting for my import of the Etrian collection.

That was somehow cheaper then buying it digital.

Fan reaction (read: angry parents contacting Hasbro) to the 86 TF movie is why the GI JOE movie had a really quick couple of edits. Duke - the GI JOE equivalent to Optimus Prime - was supposed to die. Instead, they re-recorded the dialogue so he was just really hurt and out of commission for the rest of the movie.

I used to think I was knowledgeable about how you are supposed to navigate multiple Switches + accounts and such, but in practice I was never in a multiple-Switch-owning household, and even as much as I can look up online I'd also rather ask and be sure if someone else already went through this kind of situation, because it's always slightly unique.

    Situation:

Sister's family has a household Switch. Brother-in-law is main account and sharing on my family plan subscription. Kids have their own accounts on that Switch with their own saves and such.

Nephew is finally getting his own Switch. Will want his saves imported on his own Switch. Would be nice if he had access to brother-in-law's digital purchases from the primary Switch.

What is the entire process of making this work? For example, I don't think you just make a brand new account on the new Switch, is there an onboarding process that has him log in somehow? Can he not get his saves if his account isn't also on the family plan and thus backed up in the cloud? I could add him. And to play his dad's purchased games...if I remember right, wouldn't have to use his dad's actual account on that second Switch? Which is probably a no.

I recently bought a new switch and migrated. I also had a secondary account (Japanese) to play DQX and it owned nothing else but could launch anything that was installed if I'm remembering correctly. I'm not a pro or anything at this but here's how I think this will need to go down for them to get everything they want:
    1. Nephew fires up new switch and creates a user - it will ask if he wants to import from another switch, the process is explained really well and easy to follow. The old switch will need to be handy as they'll need to communicate directly with each other.
    2. Going through the process, it will ask if he wants to move his saves from his old switch, no cloud required. This is not a copy. They will be deleted from the old switch (the ui explains this too).
    3. At this point he should be good to go with his own switch for any physical games.
    4. To get the games from the dad's library, dad will need to log in to the new switch with his Nintendo account and redownload the games in question.
    5. Once they're on the new switch any account (online or not) should be able to play them, not just the owning account. I just made an offline account for my daughter and launched a digital game that was purchased on my main account to verify.

So I'm like 90% confident they can do what they're looking to do here.

EDIT: I think you could also have your brother-in-law log in and do his thing first, I don't think the order really matters.

Probably one reason (besides cost) that Ultra Magnus (Robert Stack in the movie) was re-cast in the subsequent series!

The movie was probably my first exposure to the talents of Eric Idle as well.

...and probably most of that amazing cast, to be fair. But still, Eric Idle doing a comic turn in a movie with Orson Welles giving his last performance (and a bloody good one too) as an extraordinary villain is something you'd never otherwise find in movie bingo.

And it's not just the celebrity end of the voice cast. Take for example Neil Ross (Springer, Slag, Bonecrusher, Hook), who has a resume as long as your arm, but some of his more noteworthy roles for a video game forum include Colonel Volgin in Metal Gear Solid 3, Wally the cartographer in Monkey Island, Han Solo in Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, and the announcer in Call of Duty.

Tilt n' Tumble opens the door for WarioWare Twisted, so that's awesome.

It's a fucking crime the Harvest Moon clips don't include the town theme. The game itself was put on the JPN app a while back, but it coming here means Natsume games might be on the block. I mean I certainly won't hold my breath... but one can hope this opens the door for the Lufia games...

They made a movie? That could be cool I guess as long as they don't kill off all the beloved characters within the first few minutes just to make way for new, shitty designs and toys that no one who grew up watching the show would have any interest in. That would be insane right? To knowingly and willfully traumatize some kid who was, say, 5 years old and super excited to see Optimus Prime and Megatron go at it on the big screen.

I would be so upset if that happened to me that it might make me wary of all Transformers properties for the next 37 years and counting!

It is kind of funny how many people turn their nose up at the Bay Era of Transformers but unironically think the '86 movie is quality. I'm not saying it's wrong to enjoy things that are bad, as I genuinely enjoy Mallrats (while understanding it is by no means an actually good movie). But all the Transformers movies are different degrees of awful. It's just that only one of them tickles the nostalgia boner of fans of a certain age.

Man, the soundtrack alone is reason enough to watch. I won't argue the merits (or lack) as a movie, but as an elevated part of the TV series' ongoing narrative? So, so good.

All this Transformers talk reminds me of the most cutting remark I've seen on the Internet.

The first Bay movie was in pre production and producer Don Murphy had become a regular in the Ain't it Cool talk backs. There was a big controversy when Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime from the TV cartoons, wasn't instantly cast for the same role in the movie.

I wish I could remember the exact phrasing, but some random person in the talk back said that this controversy was from a generation of latch key children who were raised by Optimus Prime, their surrogate father.

In the moment, it seemed so true. Man, people were NOT happy about that.

Every so often I remember that comment, and it rings true about a lot of things.

In the moment, it seemed so true. Man, people were NOT happy about that.

Every so often I remember that comment, and it rings true about a lot of things.

Funny how in hindsight, he's the most consistent thing about the franchise(bloodthirsty tendencies aside).

Cullen is great, no doubt about it, and definitely shows that professional voice actors can be a better choice than a celebrity voice cast for the sake of name recognition.

Lufia 2 would make me extremely happy.

    Sigh.

I just wish we could just play as Captain Olimar again. :(

I am glad the focus might seem to be back on a single explorer though.

Just make your character look like Olimar! I’m sure it won’t make for an awkward rescue. I mean, his eyes are closed 90% of the time anyways so he likely won’t even notice!

[*] Going through the process, it will ask if he wants to move his saves from his old switch, no cloud required. This is not a copy. They will be deleted from the old switch (the ui explains this too).

What if he wants his saves on both via the cloud? Do I add him to the family plan first, let all his saves upload, then they just magically show up on his new Switch?

I'm thinking yes, would be better to have him as a family plan to have the save on both (and can update/copy back and forth) easier. I honestly can't remember, but I broke down and upgraded to the family plan so my wife and I can play on our multiple Switches (and have saves on all of them). The only thing that sucks is the digital "nope you can't both play digital games and DLC at the same time" crap. I wish Nintendo would fix that instead of screwing families over that want to play two different games.

Nintendo is doing this "Experience" event in Seattle at the same time as PAX West. You can enter a drawing to see if you get tickets.

If it was just me, no biggie, but I want to bring my kids (5 & 7). Everyone in the family plan has to have their own Switch account. Kids 6 and under can be a part of their parent's account and don't need to create an account.

So my daughter is going to be 6 that weekend because that is too many fucking hoops to jump through for absolutely no fucking reason.

I don't think anyone cared much about Duke from GI Joe though.

Duke was the main GI JOE hero at the start. It was him, Scarlett, and Snake Eyes. They were the main three protagonists.

A bit later on, it shifted to Flint and Lady Jaye. IIRC, this was about the time of the movie (Sergent Slaughter - yes, the WWF wrestler - joined the JOEs at about the same time). Which makes sense, since Duke was killed hurt in the movie.

Interesting fact - the old 1980s TF and GI JOE cartoons were linked. Marissa Faireborn (a recurring character in the post-movie 3rd season of TF) is Flint and Lady Jaye's daughter. And the episode "Only Human" has Cobra Commander in it (he even screams out "COOOBBRRRAAA!" at the end).

For a video game tie-in, Bill Ratner - the guy who voiced Flint - also voiced Ambassador Udina in Mass Effect.

Now you know! And knowing is half the battle.

As a kid I was big into both WWF wrestling and 80s action cartoons, so the Sergeant Slaughter showing up on both programs was one of the wildest things for me.

To the part in bold: Flint and that crew were introduced in the second mini-series, which preceded the 1985 ongoing series, and the 1986 season is when Slaughter showed up. Then the movie came after that season, whose opener had introduced Serpentor, both of whom featured prominently in the movie as well.

Some interesting stuff out there about how that season opener and the movie's plots came about.

I didn't even know Slaughter was a wrestler until later. He was just this guy who kicked the most ass in GI Joe to me for a while, until I saw a wrestling VHS on the shelf at Walmart featuring him on the cover.

Pikmin 4 is that soon!? That crept up on me.

I mean I’ll still likely be submerged fully in Zelda at that point the rate things are going, but it’s nice to know there’ll be stuff ready for my emergence.

I swear to god, they've crashlanded on Pikmin planet so many times now they're close to being able to add city builder elements to the formula. XD

I think that would be a good hook for a future game, actually. People going down to the planet and try to settle in its wild frontier.

Friendly reminder that Pikmin planet is really post apocalyptic Earth. One game's treasure was literally a Duracell battery.
