Sometimes I'm thinking about maybe getting a cheaper (well, "cheaper") mirrorless camera, but on the other hand, my iPhone is probably good enough for 90% of stuff.
If you've got the funds for it, modern cameras and lenses are incredible.
Not gonna lie, I got an S23 Ultra and the camera(s) on this thing are pretty incredible for most day to day stuff. Even compared to my old S8, the zoom and low light stuff is like magic.
I still find cellphone low light pictures to be kind of crappy, but at the same time, they're so much better than they used to be it's like they're not even in the same zip code anymore.
Okay your milky way shot looks like ass, you still managed to get a milky way shot with a sensor the size of your pinky toenail!
It's pretty incredible.
Hey, if you don't mind delivering advice
Is there anything worthwhile in the space between a cell phone camera and like a DSLR or whatever body/lens camera archetype
Like something essentially phone sized that is just dedicated to being a camera that will do better than a S21

My iPhone 13 Pro Max takes some truly excellent photos, even in the dark
This was taken in full dark looking over the ocean. That light you see in the distance is Los Angeles, about 60 miles away

The problem is that DSLR bodies are so cheap now. Things like the Canon powershot are okay but theyre not a camera you have everywhere (phone) and if youre bringing a camera you might as well have something more capable.
I think theyre a good option for a casual photographer who wants a small option to keep on hand but theyre a very niche use case. The ones with nicer lenses arent even super cheap? Idk
Thankfully it’s not usually dangerous, just annoying.

I submitted an entry to Lego Ideas, and if 10,000 people support me, it'll be turned into an actual Lego set!If you'd like to see and support my submission, follow this link.

Yeah, you nailed the problem. A good compact camera with a nice lens can easily cost as much as a mid-range cell phone if you're buying new. And it seems like manufacturers have largely abandoned the market segment since cellphone cameras got good enough for casual use.
Yeah, that's kind of what I'm looking at. Sure, I have the funds, but it's still a bunch of cash for something I'm not sure if I can maintain an interest in.
Do I not take many photos because I don't have a real camera, or do I not have a real camera because I don't take many photos? :thonk:
honestly i'm really put off using my iphone lately with how the algorithms on it seem to butcher some photos
if you take a live photo and press it, you can see how it looked and then you can see the iphone automatically editing it and it blows the shit out of blues and whites
pics end up looking like shit from instagram circa 2012
yes this irritates the shit out of me
it *usually* doesn't kick in in my photos because I don't take photos with recognizeable subjects, but sometimes it still does especially when the light's a bit weird
I know there are apps to get the raw images but I haven't installed them yet
still trying to figure out if I should try to buy a camera that lets me do night photography. I don't want to spend thousands so idk. iPhone works for basically everything I want to do (and doesn't require that I carry an extra object around)

What's this?
It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

The idea of a sweet soup not just being a dessert is definitely a cultural incongruency
I think part of that is, despite our general American penchant for unhealthiness, we don’t generally do big desserts? Like, we love dessert, but it’s usually a fairly small serving.
An entire bowl of anything seems like a lot of dessert.
Who you calling small?

At a restaurant that would come with three forks and a pot of coffee
It is generally my opinion that most cakes and cupcakes have far too much frosting. I want to scrape off literally 90%+ of what comes on most things
Depends on the type of frosting. The stuff from a can on homemade birthday cakes are fantastic, as is the similar but better stuff some high end bakeries use.
The frosting on grocery store cakes though is usually crap. It gets that little bit of sugar crust and is just sweet but bland. I'll still eat it but I'd rather have a better cake.

I feel that it’s not the total volume of frosting nearly as much as it is the cake needing at least a couple of layers to spread that icing more evenly across each bite; cupcakes only have the one layer so they’re almost always going to have too much or too little icing.
I'm having a day with just absolutely zero volition. I can't even start a video game! Instead, I'm nagged with the persistent sensation that there's something I want to do, and in fact should address urgently, but I can't put my finger on what it is. Holy shit it's annoying.
@Jacobkosh You need to come to my TED talk and you're feeling my brain reaching out to you through the void. It's the only explanation.

And I don’t like cupcakes because they’re messier than I like and then you also have to find a trash bin for the paper

you cannot make a cupcake or cake with too much frosting for me
i save every one
