EA has announced that the publisher will be splitting into two different organizations, EA SPORTS, and EA Entertainment.

The announcement was made today in an EA blog, which said the company was making the next step of its “strategy by aligning our studios into two organizations that report to me — EA Entertainment and EA SPORTS.”

not sure if this will make a difference to anyone but the tax accountants and management

I'm pretty sure it just means EA Entertainment is going to go the THQ route in five years or so while Sports continues to coast on that FIFA money

The positive spin on this is that the head of Entertainment is Vincent Zampella, currently the head of Respawn.

Who do Apex and the Jedi games, and make a lot of money.

Disconnecting that from the gambling fueled sports games is a good thing.

The question is if they can bring any of the hundred skeletons out of the EA dead franchises swamp. The Dead Space remake was well received, but is it strong enough to start making new ones? Survival-Horror is crowded and Capcom is an absolute beast in releasing quality game after quality game.
Can they rescue NFS or is that a sport?
Can they breath life into Bioware? A studio that is surrounded by a lot of gossip of executive meddling and high turnover.

The other question is if John Drake will allow more EA Star Wars games after Jedi 3. The Mouse likes money and those games make money, but I'm not sure they were happy with what EA did with 10 years. I'd say it'd probably be an non-exclusive kind of deal, at best of the kind of 'you will be the only 3D action-adventure Jedi game' in a certain time window.

The question is basically whether separating them means that the EA Entertainment division gets its own budget/staff/culture and can push projects without push from the microtransaction-heavy nature of the sports side, or whether the sports side's numbers were basically subsidizing all of EAs swings/single player games and the new EA Entertainment side can't actually justify projects with how much it pulls in. Hoping for the former.

Yes, although I'd point out for anybody who isn't aware the first Detective Pikachu was very much a kids game in the sense that "identify which color is red and which is green" is the level of puzzles it's working on.

Oh man, today I discovered one of my all-time childhood favourite games, which was unavailable for decades, got a 30th anniversary release in 2021 on Switch.

The only reason I discovered it existed at all is because I couldn't remember the name of the sequel to Another World, a completely unrelated game, and when I googled Flashback this came up in the Google autocomplete. Turrican Flashback for Switch? WTF is that?

More importantly: Brolo, why didn't you tell me back in January 2021?

Holy shit, the music in that trailer is 80s as fuck

Chris Hülsbeck. The origial AMIGA soundtrack is rad as fuck. From 87 or so. I am still amazed about what they pulled out of that soundchip back then.

Wonder if that means I can sell mine for close to the current full price once the price goes up? I got mine for free back when the Series X was new and only played it for a little while so it's basically brand new

I can't remember how old the Bowsette memes are, but can you believe I only learned last month that the internet had also done this with a bunch of other characters? King Boo seems to be the most common after Bowser, but there's also a bunch of Petey Piranha and a Chain Chomp.

I managed to go [x] years being insulated from all that somehow. The above video even briefly mentions the Chain Chomp but I still missed it.

And as always, Wart remains alone and forgotten.*

there's not really "a" chain chompette. bowsette has the only "mostly canon" design because it kicked it off but after that it's a lot of people spontaneously going out into similar fields. as far as i'm aware the first known chain chompette was by a shortstack porn artist but it barely resembles a lot of the more common riffs (in part because a lot of later ones abandoned the "they look like peach" aesthetic)

The demo has some great ideas, but it's trying to make autonomous multiworker pathing and task prioritization work, which has never been easy, especially since those little pixons have like five different needs to fulfill in addition to a health bar. It could at least stand to have some high-priority flagging.

Crime O'Clock - you're a time detective, trying to stop anomalous historical events that should not have happened (crimes) from unravelling history. In short, each crime location is a big Where's Wally scene, with a bunch (~8 in the demo) of time 'snapshots'. You do a tutorial and then two additional missions in the demo for about 45 mins total, so I don't know how free it gets (or doesn't get), but the basic loop is you finding the crime, backtracking to find the culprit, moving back and forward in time to determine what they did, why they did it, then finding a place in time to report them and have them stopped before they cause the major event.

If you enjoy hidden object games like Ever Seen A Cat? or Find All, take that and combine it with having a big scene where you can see people and events through multiple snapshots in time. I really hope the full game lets you move between them at will (rather than just as progress requires) because they really put the effort into everyone in the scene doing something or having things happen at them, from marching bands moving through the city to tourists enjoying the sights to minor crimes. Also, loads of references to other media to find, which is fun.
