I got an amazing webdev job out of college 13 years ago and I've kept it almost uninterrupted for that whole time. The reason it was amazing was not the pay, but that I had two bosses (a married couple at the time) who were both wonderful people who treated me like a person first and an employee second. I stuck with them when they split around 8 years ago and continued to co-own the business, and they never let their personal lives affect the business. I stuck with them when they sold the 6 person company to a local 100+ person company 3 years ago. I stuck with that company when the one that was my technical mentor left for other opportunities a year ago. Today my other boss left the company, leaving me the only remaining asset of the acquisition.

I've built my personal and professional brand in these last several years, and my job is both integral to the company and irreplaceable, so I'm not in any danger of having my job radically changed anytime soon, but it still blows. The people steered my professional development for over a decade, who kept me out of the cubicle-farm corporate or hand-to-mouth freelancer hellscapes, are no longer a part of my life.

This is a real :bro: moment

I wanna double agree here. I swooned in nostalgia reading @Delzhand's post at my own similar experience losing my mentors and allies in the work world.

Heyo, a reminder to anyone who's job is being shitty about Monday, a certain SaaS company gives everyone 3 paid days off in July for "summer break" every year (it's 3rd, 4th, and 5th this year) which amounts to a five day weekend.

Here's the jobs they have open for the Americas right now:

Today, my team lead noted that no one out of our team of 8 had asked for the 3rd off. This, despite the fact that we knew it would be slow, and policy says we can have up to 3 people out and still be fine.

I asked for the 3rd and 5th pretty danged fast. :D

I already took the 3rd off but strongly considering the 5th, I have plenty of PTO.

My girlfriend is in a bit of a pickle with her district right now. I guess they got a sizeable budget hike, I'm not clear on the details, but it's like 30-40 million more bucks. Probably a mill levy increase or something.

Anyway, the districts plan included portioning that out for mainly teacher raises, building construction needs (a/c, deferred maintenance, etc) and some large enough raises for non-teaching/non-admin staff that I'd at least look at maybe jumping ship. Except, her union wants even more of that money for the teachers; they're satisfied with the building construction stuff, they'd like more but they're not willing to be hardnose about it.

So in effect the Union is demanding more pay at the expense of their support staff (paras, facilities, cafeteria, techs, etc) who've reportedly had the same pay issues my district has in terms of timely raises and the like. And that's not sitting well with her at all. Especially now that step and ladder increases will not go into effect for the next school year right now because they can't agree on pay. She and a couple other teachers she knows have tried speaking up about it but they feel like they're shouting into the void. The pushback they keep getting is the Union went to bat for staff getting pay increases during early Covid so there's no reason to now.

[Edit]But, it's actively working AGAINST them this time. The district is saying "we'd like to give you this much money and them this other much money" and the Union is saying "We'd like to have more money and them to have less." that's like, the opposite of simply not going to bat for them.

We deal with a lot of older folks at my job, 65 and over mostly. Mostly that's because that is the age Americans qualify for Medicare, which is the socialist health care that the boomers kept for themselves while telling the rest of us to fuck off. It means the devices my company sells are actually affordable. No, really. A continuous glucose monitor like the Dexcom has two versions, a Medicare version and a commercial version. It literally says on the box Medicare only. The difference is literally an order of magnitude in price, 1500 per 3 months compared to 150. And these entitled, environment ruining, narcissistic assholes still have the fucking audacity to complain. What do you mean my insurance doesn't cover it completely? Look Karen, you have a 226 deductible with 80% coverage after that. I have a 3600 deductible with 60% for the same device and that is average. This one dude complained to me because the devices he had been receiving through the mail stopped showing up. He didn't know where they were coming from or who was paying for them. I literally cannot imagine that level of feeling like the world owes me. The sheer level of karmic justice that a lot of these people can't afford them, despite needing them, because they wanted the government to fuck up our healthcare system is not lost on me. Some of them actually die from it, which is sad and I do feel bad, but it is entirely their own fault. Very frustrating part of the job.

Union's currently in negotiations for contract with the state. State is being a bunch of wankers on pay with their only offer being a 6% pay increase over three years, so 2% each year which doesn't even come close to covering inflation. Union is pushing for 26% which is definitely not going to happen but don't be surprised if I start commenting on the potential of California state workers going on strike in the next few weeks.

I have an interview for another job!

This one is specifically a role in which I would be leading a team of creatives and managing a design studio inside a large, multinational company.

This is exactly the kind of role I'm wanting to move into and this interview is not as a lower position with the chance to move into a leadership role, it's starting in a leadership role.

I am so excited to even be considered a viable candidate!
I had this interview tonight and it was GREAT. The people were rad, the job sounds really interesting, the salary is right where I want it.

I was the last of three finalists to be interviewed. They said they'd give me an update tomorrow!

Last job thread got to 104 pages. Great job everyone!

Corporate sent a memo that we're going to have to improve by 2% year-over-year to reach our investor's goals. So this thread's new goal is 106 pages. If we reach this goal, we're being told there will be a pizza party! ($30 max)

My direct supervisor's retirement reception is this afternoon. While this would ordinarily be a nice opportunity to duck out of work and go visit with some people, I couldn't wrangle my weekend rotation and other meetings this week so that this wasn't my day off. So now it's a massively intolerable imposition on me sitting around in my boxers in a dark quiet room on the hottest day of the year so far.

How are we supposed to reach that target if corporate laid off 1/3 of the posters?

And can we post from home?

How are we supposed to reach that target if corporate laid off 1/3 of the posters?

Corporate understands that these are trying times with the recent layoffs. But they're positive that if we all refocus on our job and advance our new strategic plans, that we shall be able to work through this while reaching our goals. Once the tough times have passed, we'll look into reintroducing raises, bonuses, and other arbitrary money sink losses such as PTO, 3 weeks paid maternity leave, insurance, and in-office snacks.

As for posting from home (PFH), the mandate is that all PFHs are at your direct manager's discretion. The baseline will be no more than 25% of all posts can be PFHs, with an additional 10% of posts made from work. Corporate statistics indicate that the remaining 65% of posts need to be made on the toilet as per the guidelines.

Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to a great Q3!

Yeah, my wife is going through that process right now, and she works in the memory (hardware manufacturing) industry, which....woof.

She's got a job for now, but her team is getting wound down, so there's definitely an expiration date, sadly.

For some reason we haven't had to do a self-assessment (yet). Maybe that's coming later? I guess I'll just wait and see if someone complains at me that I missed it.
