some uh... some not fun tech youtube stuff:
Linus Tech Tips, which is the biggest youtube tech channel, and one of the biggest youtube channels period, got called out by gamersnexus for frequently having misleading/bad data and errors on their review videos
this video is not monetized. This video covers our serious concerns regarding the data accuracy of Linus Media Group, including Linus Tech Tips, ShortCircuit, and TechQuickie, particularly as it relates to rushing content out the door to favor -- by staff's own admission -- quantity over quality. As the company continues to expand into its LTT Labs direction, the importance of accurate data increases; however, even as 'only' entertainment, there are still certain responsibilities to the consumer and the manufacturers to report fairly (and to have defined corrections processes in place). We tried to approach this as objectively as possible and hope that viewers are able to listen to the evidence we present, particularly as it relates to significant and frequent data errors that now present in nearly every technical review video.
linus initial response wasn't great, but the new CEO of the company then sat every down, paused video production for a week, and then they produced this video owning up to some of their mistakes
madison, who worked at LTT as their social media manager, was repeatedly belittled, lied to about the terms of her employment, called slurs and was inappropriately grabbed multiple times while working at LTT, and then after expressing her concerns and trying to resolve things, was blacklisted from being in videos and called a snitch
The whole thing with them doing that Billet Labs test entirely wrong and then selling the engineering prototype is pretty damning, like that alone would've been a substantial topic to cover but alongside everything else it's pretty much impossible for LTT to come out looking good
Awesomed Brolo's post for the effort. I had stopped watching LTT a while ago as I thought their ethics with respect to their "reviews" were getting extremely loose, but this still kinda hit hard. I did enjoy their content for years, and had pretty good vibes towards a lot of their staff, even if I didn't for Linus himself. Even without Madison's posts that apology video kinda erased a bunch of that.
Monetizing your apology video? A little crass, I guess. Selling your wares in the video? Get the fuck out. Releasing information about Billet that they requested be hidden? Delete this.
It's like they went out of their way to prove GN correct.
I like how the first line in GN's video description for the original call-out is "This video is not monetized"
GN Steve comes across as a grouch in a manner that rubs some very Online parasocialites the wrong way but, damned if his sense of ethics isn't a fairly thorough one
Yeah I think people have wanted to get the knives out for Linus et al for a long while now, and GN was finally the one with enough clout to break their armor
Like over on Reddit a pretty substantial fraction of the front page the last day or two has been this subject, and basically no one besides the dedicated LTT fora and subreddits are pro-LTT here

Naaaaaw they didn't sell it
they auctioned it. For charity.
Completely totally different and not at all objectionable in any way at all duh
God what a fucking mess. Went through and did the unsubscribe dance last night.
If obscure internet community drama has taught me anything, it's the fandoms can germinate around basically anything, and those fandoms can turn toxic for no reason at all.
how can a channel about computer parts have.......... a fan base????????
i hate everything
that's just how cults of personality work my dude
meanwhile, we exist on a forum for a webcomic. the wheel turns
although as near as I can tell everyone here is "oh yeah those guys, I guess they own these forums? whatever" at best and "fuck the penny arcade guys" at worst so

To be fair, I have invited people to hang out here because of the awesome culture and friendly attitudes, and was basically told no because they didn't want to associate in any way with some of Mike and Jerry's past issues. I don't blame them either.

athenor made the point I was driving towards better. anything touched by human hands will eventually have flaws and issues. it is not only an eventuality, it is a certainty.
how bad those incidents will be is the variability in the equation.
No sorry, he thinks unions are a failure of a company to treat their employees well and he doesn't think they're necessary at LMG.
As pointed out in the GN video where they quote numerous employees saying that they're constantly crunching to meet production deadlines and don't have the resources or time to do good work. Hmm, wonder what could help that situation....

The "if my people want to unionize it means I screwed up" mentality is one I used to think. Regardless of my political beliefs, I always treated my employees with care and respect, and I figured if I kept doing that they wouldn't need to because, hey, why would someone want to do that to their cool boss?
But by the time I left management, I was definitely more "hey, your next boss might not be cool, and the company sure as fuck isn't. You all should unionize." The store manager was pretty pissed that I said that, which might be partly because it was during a going away party they were doing for me.

I've often thought about that. If/when I get to a true management position, I want to make sure I do everything I can to promote unionization. Not for me, but so that everyone knows their worth and power. I don't know how to square dealing with poor employees, but.. well, I work at a university, we're horrible at that as is. I also am not sure how unions would feel about a boss/management/"The man" suggesting they unionize.
... it'd be much better if I owned my own business.

Universities already have their own pseudo version in my experience as no one ever gets fired, even when they absolutely should.

Education is more rife with them from my anecdotal experience. The most toxic manager I had who nearly destroyed my friend's life because he dared try to get out from under her was actively protected, despite never doing anything and mostly just making up bullshit violations/writeups so you could never go anywhere else in the university.
The Sotheby's auction house has been named as a defendant in a lawsuit filed by investors who regret buying Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs that sold for highly inflated prices during the NFT craze in 2021. A Sotheby's auction duped investors by giving the Bored Ape NFTs "an air of legitimacy... to generate investors' interest and hype around the Bored Ape brand," the class-action lawsuit claims.

all of this is... well I guess it's drama on some level, but ultimately things seemed like they got resolved
and then this thread got linked and referred to multiple times, and it seems a whole lot worse:

My question is: is the fan base a 40mm or 60mm. Or 120mm?
I'm a fan of MKBHD so it's not a wild thing to be a fan of a content creator.
They just have to y'know......not be pieces of shit for me to continue watching their content.
140 clearly
fuck linus, dude is a piece of shit and always has been. i forgot about his insane anti union shit as well, absolute scum.
