My buddy is a huge music nerd and naturally an audiophile as well. I have to admit, listening to a $4k speaker setup is a truly different experience compared to the average home audio system. Not saying it's worth the money to me, but i get why it is to him and those cursed enthusiastic about music.

Having crappy hearing has saved me so much money

Problem: When streaming games from my PC upstairs to the TV in living room, my bluetooth controller can drop inputs at frustrating moments

You, a virgin, let's buy an expensive bluetooth repeater or a better dongle with a greater range

Me, an alpha chad, let's buy a fucken cheap 5m USB extension cable, run it from the PC to halfway down the stairs and have the tiny bluetooth dongle hang from the end

New problem: I need to find a new excuse for why I keep dying in Nine Sols

I was thinking to get a 15 to make sure to avoid the crud but the 16 is cheaper and comes in better colours so I ordered that. I hope I don't come to regret my actions. [ominous music sting]

How is Apple about supporting deprecated features? My fear would be they integrated it deep into the phone and when they inevitably stop supporting it in the next few months or years it would fuck up my ability to use the phone.

So just to collate all the advice here and confirm, since I haven't bought speakers since I was a literal child: it seems like the preferred desktop PC setup is to buy a pair of chunky bookshelf speakers and set them up on either side of my primary monitor? I've got the desk space for it and it seems like that's what most of the review sites are saying, but I feel like I'm teetering on the edge of a mattress review abyss here and I've only ever known the 3.1 world with satellites and a subwoofer and that whole jazz.

Not really? Apple has some of the best phone software support out there. They consistently get updates well beyond what most android phones get.

If they want to deprecate it they can just remove it in a software update, there's no reason why it should fuck up the phones if they don't want it to. I'd generally trust Apple at least that far.

The only "big" feature I can remember them removing was the Haptic Touch. The whole "press, press harder, press hardest" menu stuff. I really liked it but apparently nobody used it.

a lot of the things they made for that are still in the phones, it's just via long press instead. i actually didn't know they removed haptic touch when i got a newer phone because all the things i did with it still worked like the spacebar cursor control and whatnot.

Well, I have it now. So far so iphone, only larger than the 13 mini. I'd still prefer the smaller one but hey, basically free new phone. I don't know when they're going to enable the coal-rolling lying machine but we'll see how that goes I guess.

    Cross-posted in the Fitness thread:

    [snip]

Looking at camelcamelcamel, it seems worth waiting at least until September to see if the price (on the Venu 3S) drops again & order directly, but if not, I'll likely order through REI to get the member dividend & good return policy. [snip]

Garmin was having a sale, so I ordered through REI on the 21st with delivery on the 26th, and it's still 'processing'. CS chat just recycled the info from the initial 'order received' email, no elaboration on the delay. No telling when this thing will show up.

Kinda wishing I'd ordered directly now and relied on the warranty, since the CS experience wasn't particularly responsive, much less enough to engender loyalty to REI. Especially since the return window started on the 21st; tick tick tick. At least it's also a year.

I ordered watchbands later that night, and they're here a day early, so good job, Barton Watch Bands!

Microsoft said it would be optional and you can disable it and anyway it's only AI PCs, but Windows 24H2 installs Recall on everything. And makes it a dependency for File Explorer. Chris talks about how to fix this, but I would not assume that this will be a permanent fix. If you are updating your W11, you should assume have the Recall spyware active on it.

    Oh. Cool ...

Time to learn Linux more then. I guess.

Will teams run in a Firefox tab on not Windows? That's how I do therapy appointments.

  • V1mV1m Registered User regular
I haven't tried it myself because I have no need for Teams on my own PC, but a quick YT search turned up this guy who shows how. Disclaimer: he got teams working in Mint but the sound quality in his tutorials is poor. Luckily they're quite short and you can just watch what he does.

    https://www.youtube.com/@DavRepair

This one is a bit clearer, but a little less recent:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63Tba3sT9xg

I had a look at the Octopi software manager that my Garuda Linux install uses, which gives access to the AUR (Arch User Repository) and there is a teams-for-linux app available to install too. So it's not a debian-based distro only thing, and you're not restricted to using Mint if you want to use something fancier. But as long as your hardware isn't very new, Mint will probably work fine for you.

The main disclaimer is that there's no hard and fast promise that Microsoft won't do some shitty thing to break it working on Linux.

If you want to follow this up, let's head over to the Linux thread.

I'm trying out the live disk version of fedora kde spin.

Only issue do far is that if I start it without basic graphics turned on it doesn't let me use my keyboard or mouse at all. But that's just the live disk I haven't installed it locally and actually put updated Nvidia drivers in there.

Also the way I use teams has always been embedded in a chrome window not the actual desktop application. Not sure if it will just work out of the box that way or not.

The only other thing I'm concerned about is getting proton and steam up and running. Oh and support for my huion pen tablet for drawing...

Steam -> Settings -> Compatibility -> check the "Enable Steam Play for all other titles" switch.

Exit Steam. Restart Steam. Let it download new versions of Proton as required. Get used to seeing "Processing shaders..." every time you start a game whose shaders have not previously been processed into whatever shaders need to be processed into to work with lunix magixs.

NB: I am pretty sure you can't do this from a live disk, you'll have to go ahead and install. At least you couldn't in 2018.

    https://support.huion.com/en/support/solutions/articles/44001769972-does-huion-have-a-tablet-driver-that-supports-linux-

Says Ubuntu only is supported, but if Ubuntu supports it, I don't see why any distro based on Ubuntu (eg: Mint) wouldn't, and it's perfectly possible, even likely, that other distros do but Huion just don't want to hear about your problems if you're not using Ubuntu.

  • UrielUriel Registered User regular
Decided to try the image for Manjaro Linux from the live disk too. Looked cool but then the installer wouldn't open heh. I think I'll go with fedora kde spin after all.

Okay I installed kde spin to my spare SSD

I'm having some trouble tho with it randomly hiccuping with little short freezes. Particularly when Firefox is trying to load a video or thumbnail or something it's weird

Also installing the Nvidia drivers was a bit of a pain.

i had to go to a tmobile store today for something work related and I was looking at the razr flippy phone thing... its a very cool idea

the very polished sales guy i was working with actually had one and I asked him... has he had any problems.. and he said no initially and then admitted it had a crease in it....

"but its only in the protector" he said..

"can you change the protector", i ask

"you can but it voids your warranty"...

    ???

he showed me his... and the huge obvious line running down the middle of it... how long have you had it? 4 months.
