Speaking of databases, I'm constantly amazed the ancient version of MS Access that we use as our alarm backup database (It only stores the last 6 weeks, but still) doesn't collapse under its own weight.
FOR EXAMPLE
Today I wanted to find out how many times commercial power had failed at a site the last few weeks. So I check the backup in Access. And I get something like 20,000 records.
Because there are two alarms that have been hitting every couple minutes for six weeks.
Son of a-
Remember, this is just one site out of probably a couple hundred that we monitor. There's so many records, a query sometimes takes a full 30 seconds to process. And this is only for the last 4-6 weeks.
(I tagged the alarms, meaning I basically turned them off. They're not actionable, so there's no need to see them.)
using the standard odbc connector, you can point an access app to MSSQL, MySQL, Oracle, etc...
It might be worth it; porting out of access to SQL is very easy.
So
You say that
But the odbc connector is super old, updating it breaks everything, and using it any way aside from already existing things doesn't seem to work. I tried fixing this 3 years ago and gave up.
To be fair, I'm no where close to a DB expert, but it's a completely ad hoc system put together by a tech who doesn't work here anymore, and the DB team that actually manages the REAL SQL database doesn't want anything to do with it.
No, you're right. MS Access ODBC connectors are a lie. MS Access is basically a trap - there is no migration path.
they work(ed) shockingly well if you started life in access and moved the data to MSSQL in 2006-2007 or so.
No idea the landscape today.

The man also consumes more Perrier than, I dunno, a place where a larger number of people consume less Perrier per capita but like when summed it would be a lot of perrier but not more than he drinks.

Which, i mean, I feel like that lyric is how non-management feels about management a lot of the time.
You say you understand and appreciate our efforts and yet continue to lower morale for the sake of numbers. I’m the one doing the heavy lifting, ya pieces of shit.

When you age/dry cookie dough in the fridge, are you supposed to cover it?
I had dough left over for like 3-4 cookies tonight and rather than cram them onto the pan or do a 2nd batch I just decided to throw the mixing bowl into the fridge (uncovered), and even though its only been 2 hours it's already super dry?

TIL in 2013 two Iranian F-4 Phantoms attempted to intercept a drone escorted by two F-22 Raptors. Due to having a bumblebee-sized radar cross-section, an F-22 was able to fly underneath an F-4 to see its weapons without it noticing, then flew next to the F-4 and radioed "you really ought to go home."
I have taken 4 xanax and two melatonin so offset the anxiety/stress of having to go to work tomorrow.
I refuse to have another 3 nights in a row of not sleeping thanks to stress.

I shall. The xanax is .5 each.
My old office sucked because one person made the entire thing miserable (with a few people being ass kissers to her). However, the office had a common enemy.
This office? Everyone sucks. And management specifically is gunning for me despite my mental health issues. I think my new second line is a cunt and a half who got her promotion getting someone demoted and is looking to do it again but with me. The problem is that unlike the previous person she demoted, I’m trying to do my job. The other person just stopped doing anything and decided to fight every supervisor she ever had and was generally considered by all to be a dick.
She and I are not the same.

And malicious compliance is difficult when no one puts anything in writing cause they know they’re wrong.
So now I must lay back and think of England.
If nobody puts anything in writing I feel like the malicious compliance is doing whatever you want and then when confronted say "oh I thought you said X, Y, Z"
it seems like today I worked from 9-9.30 with the first half of the day being active meetings and logistics planning for things and the second being technical reviews with only a couple half hour breaks thrown in there

I skipped ahead in my discworld book readthrough to read the first Tiffany Aching book cuz I was curious how Pratchett would handle a YA story, and huh, that was actually one of his more emotionally raw books! Especially considering how most of his female protagonists have left tended to leave me a bit cold. There's plenty of silliness but its core is a young girl struggling with the death of her grandma and being jealous of her younger brother and feeling like she doesn't fit in. Some really wonderfully evocative passages in it, too.
Really good stuff.
