2. Despite having lost, the Defendant was determined to remain in power. [...]

This shit drives me nuts, like here is why we are where we are... this mf'er committed obvious and real crimes that half these people are Harvard graduates and KNOW this... and this is the bullshit they spew:
Here's what GOP lawmakers have said about Trump's historic court appearance — and who hasn't spoken up yet
    From CNN staff

Some Republican lawmakers condemned former President Donald Trump's historic third indictment in the hours before and during his court appearance Thursday in Washington, DC. Other influential GOP figures have not yet weighed in.

Here's some of what we've heard so far:

Rep. Elise Stefanik, a Republican from New York and one of Trump's staunchest defenders on Capitol Hill, released a statement criticizing the indictment while Trump was in the courtroom. "The American people are smart, and they know this is a politically charged witch hunt orchestrated by Joe Biden’s corrupt DOJ," she said.
Sen. Rick Scott, a Republican from Florida, tweeted a graphic from Fox News on Thursday that compares dates in the Hunter Biden investigation with the dates that Trump has been indicted in multiple cases, and captioned it, “Every time we learn more about potential Biden family corruption, @JoeBiden’s DOJ indicts his top political opponent.”
Sen. Ted Cruz, the Texas Republican, wrote earlier Thursday on Twitter, “The DOJ: the DNC's legal arm? Indictments as political tools? This isn't impartiality; it's partisanship.”
Sen. Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee, alleged the judge assigned to the case won’t be impartial. “The judge presiding over Trump’s newest case — an Obama-appointed jurist — has previously ruled against the former president. Do you think she’ll judge in a fair and impartial manner?” she said in a tweet shortly before Trump's appearance.

Because the thing they most recently learned is that their star witness testified in another one of Comer's dumbass hearings that he knew absolutely nothing about anything whatsoever. We learned that we have even less than we claimed, this must be a distraction from finding out we're full of more shit than previously assumed.

Is it weird that I don't really care about following the process?

I'm glad he's being charged for how it will make us look historically, but everyone knows the shit he did. It's just a matter of if he'll get away with it or not, and the reaction to that news is vastly more important for our country than what happens to him personally.

*edit* yes I know, just don't post in the thread then. But it's something I've been surprised by myself about so I wanted to put it out there.

If he gets away with it, really bad stuff happens in the long term.

If he goes to prison, lesser bad stuff happens in the short term.

What actually happens to him absolutely matters.

Yeah day to day legal process probably not that interesting.

The fact a president was in court today for trying to overthrow the government? BIG FUCKING DEAL!

And the fact we all still kind of act so meh about it because there is just so much bs is telling. Not on us but on the world.

But like, they are using charges for laws created to stop the KKK in post Reconstruction.

Think on that. Dude is just the culmination of the post civil war period of white supremacist trying to and sometimes successfully overthrowing democratically elected governments in the US.

And him being convicted is a huge statement to ourselves as a country and the world, that we don't let those who try to overthrow us get away with it.

He’s also pretty much guaranteed to be indicted again next week. And he has numerous other lawsuits and trials starting right after the new year as well. All this might make him angry enough to try and physically attack Pence if they’re ever in the same room again.

WaPo talking about Trump's possible defense strategy and

    uh

    lol
Former president Donald Trump and some of his legal advisers see an upside to the latest criminal case against him: He can use his upcoming trial to further argue his false claims of a stolen 2020 election.

The looming courtroom showdown is poised to push his insistence that election fraud occurred in 2020 toward the center of the 2024 presidential campaign, a dismaying prospect for Republicans and some of Trump’s advisers who have urged him to stop belaboring that subject. Trump’s defense team has signaled that they’ll focus on rebutting prosecutors’ allegations that Trump knew his fraud claims were false.

The strategy offers a small consolation for the former president, who spent Thursday suffering once again from the small indignities that face indicted federal defendants. He was arraigned after roughly an hour-long wait inside a Washington courthouse just blocks from the site of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack at the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob. Trump spent the time occasionally rapping his knuckles on a table.

Trump has said that he wanted to subpoena people about the 2020 election and argue that he won, as prosecutors allege that he knew he lost and that his claims were false, according to people close to the former president, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private conversations.

Chutkan's gonna adore that approach, I'm sure.

    It doesn't.
    3. The Defendant had a right, like every American, to speak publicly about the election and even to claim, falsely, that there had been outcome-determinative fraud during the election and that he had won. He was also entitled to formally challenge the results of the election through lawful and appropriate means, such as by seeking recounts or audits of the popular vote in states or filing lawsuits challenging ballots and procedures. Indeed, in many cases, the Defendant did pursue these methods of contesting the election results. His efforts to change the outcome in any state through recounts, audits, or legal challenges were uniformly unsuccessful.

    4. Shortly after election day, the Defendant also pursued unlawful means of discounting legitimate votes and subverting the election results. In so doing, the Defendant perpetrated three criminal conspiracies:

    a. A conspiracy to defraud the United States by using dishonesty, fraud, and deceit to impair, obstruct, and defeat the lawful federal government function by which the results of the presidential election are collected, counted, and certified by the federal government, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 371;

    b. A conspiracy to corruptly obstruct and impede the January 6 congressional proceeding at which the collected results of the presidential election are counted and certified ("the certification proceeding"), in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1512(k);and

    c. A conspiracy against the right to vote and to have one's vote counted, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 241.

Each of these conspiracies—which built on the widespread mistrust the Defendant was creating through pervasive and destabilizing lies about election fraud—targeted a bedrock function of the United States federal government: the nation's process of collecting, counting, and certifying the results of the presidential election ("the federal government function").
