I definitely am also a lot more interested in 100%ing something that’s like a smaller indie game that I like, I just get a kick out of managing to get the whole scope of someone’s passion project. That wears off with like a ubisoft giganto-map game where just finishing the base game takes a billion hours.

Something I learned once is that the act of 100%ing a game can in fact make me hate it.

So if I start going down that road and I don't like it, I fuckin bail. I usually bail.

I'm a 100%er more often than not, which is why it bums me entirely out whenever they include multiplayer achievements.

Motherfucker, we had an agreement. You get to siphon off my time and attention and ambition in exchange for locking me inside a pleasant virtual Skinner box with, and this is vitally important, no actual goddamn human beings.

I just replayed the entire game to get that. Kind of fun speedrunning it just for notes, honestly. BK is the Rare (pun intended) game I would bother with that much, though.

this video kept getting recommended to me, with the title "now this is voice acting"

I thought it was going to be something just making fun of some cheesy line delivery

but actually... someone really acted the shit out of this

which is impressive since someone who didn't have this kind of emotional and vocal range could have made this scene go completely sideways into a bad parody territory

haha, I clicked on this a few days ago for the exact same reason.

Ubisoft have made themselves such a punchline that it can be hard to remember sometimes that they made some of the smartest and most ambitious games of the 2000s.

Yeah it's doable, it's just a mixture of spite and not being fulfilled by 100%ing stuff. I'm generally a do-side-stuff-until-I-get-bored-then-wrap-up-the-story kinda person.

I didn't get all the achievements, but I sought out every side quest in Chorus because that game is sick and earned my respect to the point where I stopped calling it Chorvs.

True most of their movie character versions of characters don't look at all like who they are supposed to be. Nic Cage excluded because that was specifically him in DBD and even then he still looks a little wonky.

I am the uncompletionist, I have no desire to do anything extra. I typically just focus on the story, as I’m lucky if a finish a game.

I’ll pepper in side quests but only if they seem interesting.

The worst was always games like BG3, constantly restarting, but I’ve killed off that habit as well.

So, Dark and Darker has released in early access yesterday. Still not on Steam due to the lawsuit, but they partnered with another provider Chaf Games and launch through their own launcher, I believe

also i still think the lawsuit is ongoing? i dunno how they're able to go into early access like this and not immediately get it taken down by Nexon

I kind of hate when games do that though, they know people will want to do it all and putting in shit you are supposed to skip over, or not do first time feels ass.

Like that's why I ultimately hated the time gating in dead rising 1 and 2. It makes you have to do like a ground hog day perfect run, and once you've done that you're done there is no reason to ever touch that game again.

Encouraging unrestricted entitlement is one of the main ways video games fuck people up imo

But also: it seems like "choices that matter" is always gonna be at odds with "ability to do everything, everywhere, without restriction," and in a narrative driven game the former is pretty much always gonna be more interesting/satisfying than the latter

It just never seems like actually making a player make a choice on doing a sidequest vs suffering a consequence and again is more of a ground hog day "you need to know the exact sequence to do these events in" and like I said it just means when I finish the game I'm done with it, I have no desire to go back and relearn the route to do it the way I'd prefer to do it.

But I'm mainly speaking of modern rpgs, or action/rpg hybrids, I don't play a lot of indi titles or non standard puzzle game or avant garde stuff so I'm sure this is more a AAA complaint than anything.

I like a game that makes me want to play it again with different choices to see how things shake out

But you know what I really like is a game that has choice but is strongly-written enough and gives me such a sense of attachment to the character and circumstances that when I beat it, I feel no compulsion to play it again differently, because I have been given such a satisfying sense of conclusion by the experience I had

Yeah, because nobody in their right mind would learn Dead Rising so well that the could do a perfect run every time and then proceed to do so for fun whenever they had like seven hours to burn.

I dunno that I generally 100% video games. If I finish a game playing normally and realize I've only got a few achievements/trophies to finish, I might pop back in and knock those out, but that's pretty rare. One of my favorite games of all time is AC: Odyssey and I've got decent sized swaths of side content in that game I'm likely never going to touch.
