The [Baseball] thread approaches the postseason

DJ EebsDJ Eebs Moderator, Administrator admin
Hey, we're past the trade deadline! Maybe your team just faceplanted after going for it, maybe your team folded on 2023 and looked to the future. Maybe your favorite team just endured a pretty rough performance from the home plate umpire that, alongside a pretty bad performance from your manager, cost your favorite team a game to a very bad baseball team!

Anyways: baseball! A guy threw a no-hitter today! That's cool

seriously though, pretty bad performance from the umps (who have been bad all series), though I suppose you could call it karma from when the Cubs got started on their current hot streak when the umps gifted them two games against the Cardinals

i think turner has hit in like 6 consecutive games since that home run. would be nice if that broke him out of his slump, it’s been painful to watch him at the plate most of the season, had big late era ryan howard energy where it looked like he had no clue where the ball was and just hoping for the best

Was very cool to see the crowd actively shift towards "let's lift this guy up instead of booing him," especially since it seems to have helped

Many stars people are saying Pittsburgh could win 72 games

    They're currently 51-63

Brewers looking to blackmail the city of Milwaukee into paying for their new stadium.

Is their stadium that old? I swear it was rather new.

I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

But it could still be newer.

It opened in 2001 which doesn't seem like an old enough stadium to need replacing.

Yeah that's the same year as tmobile/safeco and I'm not aware of the mariners asking for a new one. Then again I think once you build a great park you should just update it? Like I could see maybe maybe in the slightest bit of "well this was built back before we had good building standards/modern blah blah blahs" maybe accepting a park needs replacement, but anything from 2000+ on up not built by the boring company should be fine.

They want updates, not a new stadium. At least that's my impression from the article.

Like $300 million worth of improvements though, which is still insane.

Let's do a brief experiment here, because let's assume that a way that MLB shows its approval of what your franchise is doing is that it lets your team host the All Star game. With that in mind, lets look at how Milwaukee compares to Seattle, both from a city standpoint and from an organizational standpoint. We'll...set aside the stadium deal structures, because I don't know those and don't know how to look those up.

Seattle has a population of just over 700k, Milwaukee is sitting around 500k. That's not...especially significant, but I'd guess that having a team in the Pacific Northwest is more appealing to MLB than having a team an hour north of Chicago, where one of the league's most popular teams already resides, in one of the biggest media markets in the country.

Organizationally, the Brewers have been putting a competitive roster out on the field on a pretty consistent basis in recent series. They haven't had a ton of postseason success, but: compare their playoff history to that of the Mariners. The Mariners last year finally broke a 20 season long playoff drought. In that time, the Brewers went to the playoffs seven times, and went to the LCS twice. The Mariners' stadium is two years older than the Brewers stadium, but the Mariners have hosted the All Star game twice in that stadium, and the Brewers have only hosted once. Attendance wise, the Brewers are currently just ahead of the Mariners in average attendance per game this season.

So...what's the deal here? By any metric, the Brewers are as successful as any smaller market team in the league, and this isn't an Oakland Athletics situation where they're in an old stadium, fielding a roster that wasn't built to compete. I think MLB is actively searching for situations where they can strongarm and make an example of cities that don't instantly bow to pressure from the league, especially in smaller markets they see as expendable. It's worth noting that they tried to pull some of this shit with the Cubs and the city of Chicago didn't really blink, forcing the team to just...pay for improvements on their own, because there was no real threat that they might move the team out of Wrigley Field (not that they didn't get any concessions from the city, mind)

It does suck, though, and as a Cubs fan, they've been a more fun rivalry in recent years than the Cardinals have, since the Cubs and Cardinals haven't really been good at the same time since 2015, and the closer distance between Chicago and Milwaukee means that fans travel pretty well to either stadium (it's also nice, as a Cubs fan, to have a rivalry with a team that has had measurably less success historically)

There's been a lot of talk here locally about MLB either adding two more teams and having one go to Portland (couple new stadium plans have been revealed) or having existing team relocate there. So could be MLB trying to "quiet" push for teams to move out of crowded regions.

Personally, I don't like the newest layout as it is not next to river so they could hit dongers into it.

I know local peeps would love having a team here, but the Lloyd Center footprint is never gonna happen.

Adding a team to Portland (and presumably, to the AL West) would help the Mariners travel problem, but we'll see, I guess.

i’m on team ok then get the fuck out if this multi billion dollar organization doesn’t wanna pay for their own shit.

especially when major cities give up concessions. like do you think they aren’t gonna have a team in chicago, new york, houston, philadelphia? drives me mad

yeah, like...the city of Chicago calling the Ricketts bluff on "well, maybe we'll leave then!" yeah, well, maybe make that threat before you buy a bunch of property around the stadium, dipshits

Years ago a local Indian reservation offered to FULLY fund a baseball stadium along the Portland waterfront. In exchange they wanted to put a casino inside city limits and Portland leadership said hell no.

Mariners are on a hell of a run and they're celebrating Felix Hernandez all weekend. Vibes are pretty immaculate right now (only a half game out of the final wild card spot right now, since the Cubs beat the Jays tonight.

Anyways: final stretch of the season is shaping up to be a lot of fun. A lot of teams are coming on strong in the stretch run here (Mariners, Cubs and Phillies seem to be the big ones right now, plus the Dodgers are also hot). The teams that have been in front most of the year are fun to watch, there's a couple young and exciting teams still in the mix. Plus, the Cardinals are a non-factor, and the Yankees still can't seem to climb out of last place in the AL East. I don't know, ultimately, what to expect here, other than that I hope that Atlanta doesn't see any success until the change their name, drop the chant, and stop having Marcell Ozuna on the fucking team

The Pirates and the Reds should have a good rivalry.

Last night, the Reds won 9-2.

Shame the Jays couldn't actually win on Jose Bautista day, but as someone who can't not watch The Bat Flip moment and smile, this has been a very happy weekend for me. He's probably not making the Hall of Fame, but man, he was THE MAN for the Jays. He defined that era.

At least it was a pretty good and competitive baseball game. Getting Justin Steele out of the game in the fifth isn't the easiest thing to do this year

They're putting Felix Hernandez into the Mariners Hall of Fame tonight and this happened:

They're also tied 0-0 in the 8th, so this is truly Felix Hernandez night
