We gots X'es, we got Threads, we gots Fediverses that you can federate in (No need to ask @Echo, just pick one, any of 'em. If your neighbour is a nazi, quickly leave) and Reddit is now going to offer virtual ownership of their subreddits, maybe? Can you spend Red-Bucks to make yourself a moderator of /r/askmeanything? I was about to post the link to this new one in the old thread, before it was overrun with crypto slang, but I'm too late.

Any mod: Feel free to close this one if it's a duplicate, and if I'm screwing up your enigmatic plans.

That seems like a shitty way to stop paying OF members in money, and pay them in HornCoin instead.

Just kind of staring at that Community Points Because Blockchain thing linked at the end of the previous thread and...
Today's online communities are not like this. They are trapped inside apps and platforms, where they do not have independence or control anything of value. This limitation makes them second-class citizens, unable to chart their own destiny on the Internet.

    Followed by:
In order for contributors to claim the Points they have earned, they need to create a Vault within the Reddit mobile app.

    Welp.

Oh, it gets even better if you read the FAQ section
What if I get banned? What happens to my Points or my Special Membership?

Your existing Points will forever remain tied to your Vault address, but you will get locked out of Vault. You’ll also stop receiving distributions, and any Special Membership renewals will be cancelled.

Users need to be able to break free of app control! Also, we can ban you and keep your money, and we're the only game in town.

I like that Reddit is all "Ooh, these are internet wide points! You can take them anywhere, I'm sure that any day now, all other websites will support these and offer you free shit... any day now"

There's also a few sneaky things embedded in the whole deal:
    - From now on, you can only post images if you have a "special membership" on a sub-reddit
    - This is separate from Reddit Gold, and is only for that specific subreddit.
    - Special memberships costs either Reddit coins (1000 of them), OR $5.00 a month.
    - A lot of adult operated sub-reddits only work because of the images (I guess this is a golden time for adult fan-fiction, no special membership needed!)

    Coins are distributed like this:
10% split between all the moderators
50% split between all the "contributors," weighted on karma
40% the "community" can decide on "community rules" (votes weighted by how many coins you have) where the "crypto rich" can award themselves more, I guess.

    Also, as an extra sneaky:
    - You can only use/gain/spend reddit coins via their mobile app, if you don't use the official app, you can't ever redeem these magic crypto coins.

So.. they just want you to spend $5 per sub-reddit per month now, and exclusively use their mobile app to interact with reddit.... both a big ask, I might be done with reddit.

Subscription-gating image posts is certainly a ... bold strategy. Wow.

I love the points distribution too. No way that wasn't intended to kneecap mods after the last couple of months.

So how long does Reddit have at this point because I see that idiocy being a death knell for the platform. I mean, sure it's corpse could shamble on for a good long while, but outside of the dipshit crypto bros, everyone else is going to move on because Reddit doesn't do a damn thing to earn itself a 5 dollar a month sub, let alone a sub setup that only gets you access for just a mere fraction of the platform. The fact that it's going to wear down your phone doing bullshit calculations, probably will also be secretly mining them some other cryptocurrency, will just be the shit cherry on top.

I really wish our damn government would put it's foot down and start treating cyrpto bullshit like the scam that it is. Anyways, the platform is as good as dead now though. Shame the piece of shit running won't see any real consequences because he probably has some sweetheart deal where he either continues to rack in shit tons of money, despite actively burning the company down or get's paid a huge ass ransom to fuck off somewhere.

So you can't post images without a subscription, what about videos and links, and do gifs count as images?

Anyway this seems like they're trying to earn bank off of all of the porn subreddits but I think it's just going to kill a lot of them dead, and people will find somewhere else to go for it.

Like this is such a monumentally asinine idea. It will not work, will cost them money, and earn them nothing. Fire this jackass already, goddamn.

I think I misread the following line:
    • GIFs: Embed GIFs directly on Reddit, inside your comments.

on their explanation of what special memberships do
Mostly because in my head the first post of a thread is the same thing as all the others, forgetting that Reddit separates them out between "posts" and "comments"
So, yeah, posts will retain their current capabilities, I take it.
It's just that for $5 a month, you can post an obnoxious meme as a reply.

Mae Culpa, I would post a meme of puss-in-boots being sorry, but here the rules are "if you post a reaction meme, it better be a damn good one" and I don't feel like that much effort.

Okay, that reading might allow Reddit to actually last into 2024, rather than bursting into flames a week hour after the change goes live, and completely abandoned a month after that.

I honestly think gating currently free features behind community points might not be far off

It will be like Twitter all over again

Unless you have invested in the community you will be limited to 3 posts per subreddit per day. You can't post images. You can only crosspost to subreddits that you are also invested in

They're already going to be weighting polls based on the number of points you have, so weighting updoots can't be far behind. Comment threads with crypto bros being pushed to the top may be the future

Even though Karma is mostly worthless, it's already being farmed incessantly by bots trying to get on the front-page with reposts.

For real. 50% payout of the planet killing fake internet money based on karma? The site already has massive issues with bot's stealing content and SEO'ing fake stories to drive upvotes. A bunch of the content on the main page these days is either the same recycled shit that gets reposted every 6 months, or fake drama posts. I've noticed even the better run, non-main page subs have lost a bunch of engagement. All this kind of thing is going to do is drive more facebook level garbage made for simpletons and pre-teens.

It seems pretty clear Reddit leadership is just desperately trying to get paid before they rug pull the whole thing and abandon it to grifters.
