Your mother and I didn’t spend all that money on 10 years of improv school for this sort of behaviour

the other day we had a little team-building thing at work, just took a couple hours in the afternoon to grab a conference room and play some light games, gartic phone and word games and stuff like that

so we had ~20 minutes left and were just shooting the shit, and one of our team members suggested we do some impromptu improv scenes. apparently he fancies himself a proper improv artist, and as it turns out he is painfully bad at it. not to mention this is an IT team where folks are not exactly social butterflies. it was excruciating

Hmm. X or VI I think. V is up there on my list too.

XIV is also great but not quite the same thing.

    My top five is:
    VII:R
    VI
    VII
    IX
    X

Unless we can count Tactics. Then, you know, c’mon.

If we go outside the main numbers, FFTA(2) get on the list too. FFT was too slow for me when I tried it - I feel the games got better on gameplay and worse on story each time.

Farts are built on the hope that someone shit their pants and I think it’s beautiful to find hope in such things

I rank X relatively high more on account of it occupying such a weirdly seminal memory and time period in my life. I mean, I think it's pretty good, and I feel like if I revisited it I would still like it a lot, but my fondness is mostly because of my memories of playing it. My wife (girlfriend at the time) had just moved to Baltimore and were insanely broke and unable to even land job interviews at the grocery store, so we entertained ourselves by gradually trading in our decently large collections of games we started with for new ones that we could play through together.

This usually meant I would play the game and she would "navigate" with the strategy guide in hand. At the time we were too broke to afford to buy the strategy guide, and we couldn't afford internet access at our apartment, so we would walk to the library every day and print off the maximum number of free pages they would allow per person (maybe... 10 or 20?) of the walkthrough from Gamefaqs and bring those home to play through another chunk of the game together.

I don't want to romanticize being broke as shit or anything, but it sure does make you savor the few things you actually have for yourself.

I've never fully finished an FF game.

I watched a lot of Chip and Ironicus' FF VII Remake playthrough while on opiates after wisdom tooth extraction, so I like that one best.

In terms of best it's probably 7R. It's just really well done. I mean shit, I actively disliked 7 and I came out of R actually liking Cloud Strife, do you have any idea how fucking uphill that battle was?

In terms of personal favoritism, though, Tactics Advance 2 and Crystal Chronicles are very good. Tactics Advance 2 is just the best mechanics for a FFT game and it's not even close, the game is a joy to play whereas original FFT kinda tried the ol' patience at times. And Crystal Chronicles was one of my first brushes with the kind of "piece stuff together from various lore snippets and events" storytelling that later Dark Souls would popularize, and man do I just fucking love the ambiance and the music and so on.

It’s genuinely upsetting that almost no all dressed chips exist in the US. Ruffles has them, but they seem to retire the flavor on and off. I’ve only ever found one other small brand one time at a gas station in Rhode Island that I’ve never seen since.

look for Zapps Voodoo chips, they're essentially just all-dresseds with a extra Cajun spice

This is why Luigi jumps the highest while doing that leg kicking the entire time. He's squeezing out those farts one by one, giving him his signature floaty jump

Man, I just could not get into 13. The combat felt weird and stilted and I could not keep any of theeir terms distinct in my head so the plot kept losing meaning. L'cie and Fal'cie and whatever the fuck all that shit meant.

Is it worth going back and trying it again?

Then combat takes way too long to get interesting - if that's a deal breaker, that's more than fair and it probably won't be for you.

It's one of my favorite structured FinFan stories, with characters who have actual arcs, with a satisfying "chapter" system that plays like a serialized television show. It's undeniably extremely linear, but my tastes tend to favor interesting linearity over boring freedom, so it's not really a negative for me.

All that to say: I dunno! Maybe! A lot of people hate the game, and they're not wrong, we just all got different preferences and priorities.

yeah I liked the story in 13 a lot more than I expected to, and when the battle system finally gets going it's a whole lot of fun - lots of great endgame battles and stuff. but hoo boy does it take a while to get going. there is way too much time spent with only two characters and/or not all of your best combat options available

that being said now that you've mentioned it I'm kinda tempted to go jump into it again...

I liked the story a lot in XIII, but also hated the combat. I was totally burnt out on it by the time that it started getting better that I really didn’t even enjoy the combat towards the end. Probably ranks higher than it should for me for a game I actively disliked playing, but the story does some heavy lifting so it ends up high-middle of the pack.

I like some of the characters in 13, I'm a rare Snow enjoyer, but the gameplay was a massive dealbreaker for me.

Not even just the combat, which I don't like, but the structure of moving the plot along via running down a corridor. Like at some point cut out all the artifice and just put cutscenes in between fights and not bother having me hold up on the left thumb stick.

I think they're interesting failures. They take really interesting structural and mechanical swings, they have some really fun sidequest writing, they occasionally dip into interesting themes. But they're a bit messy, a bit repetitive, a bit lacking in focus.

I liked them more than I didn't, but buy-in on the characters/world is mandatory

Also 13-2 has the funniest middle finger of a true ending I've seen in recent memory. I looked up the requirements, and the cutscenes you get if you fulfill them, and it's staggeringly mean, it's really fucking funny.

I was burning out on the game in 13 enough that when I got to Pulse and the entire game changed to be much harder I looked up the ending to see if it would be worth slogging through. Because if my reward is good or at least interesting story I'll do a lot of stuff I normally wouldn't bother.
Then I found out that the ending was just a lot of deus ex machina where a literal goddess, who had never done anything up to this point in the story, changed the party back from crystal zombies and then enabled Fang and Vanille to do the fusion dance into Ragnarok to save the day.

Power of friendship anime bullshit is usually at least earned, this felt like the writer had painted themselves into a corner with the whole "turn to crystal if you succeed or turn to crystal zombies permanently if you fail" mechanic they came up with.

Hell all they really needed to do would be to have the goddess foreshadowed a couple times so she didn't come out of nowhere.

Also I remember you couldn't unlock the final tier of character progression until you beat the game and I'm never a fan of that. Especially when there's no more story afterwards, it's just all hunts.
