Legal insurance?

New benefit at work is legal insurance through Legal Ease. Do you guys find this sort of thing useful? It isn't too expensive but I don't want to nickel and dime myself to death on something, either. E.g. we never go with Vision coverage because the benefit ends up just costing slightly more than we'd spend on my wife's glasses at Costco during that timeframe anyhow.

Vision insurance never seems to really work out well. Dental at least gets you an insurance company that negotiates contract rates for you, not so much with them paying for things.

The on topic comment is that home owners/renters insurance often contains some legal insurance stuff as well. I'd look to make sure you're not doubling up.

It’s a good deal if you need will and trust items done. But if you need like real legal representation. You’ll find their coverage and attorneys lacking.

Not the same company, but my employer offers something like this. It’s good for getting out of speeding tickets to avoid points, and I was able to use it when I closed on my house which saved some money.

As Zepherin sort of alluded to though, it’s good for paperwork type stuff but that’s it’s limit.

I bought it this year to get a will done. Figured with my toddler we should probably have something in place.

The problem with vision insurance is that if you have glasses or contacts, it's a pretty fixed and predictable expense, maybe your glasses will cost a bit more next year but anything serious or emergent usually doesn't fall under the vision coverage anyway. Insurance doesn't really work for that kind of expense, it'll almost always cost you more than it saves you.

Dental has some fixed and predictable costs but then there's that background risk of getting an unexpected bill for $infinity that still falls under the dental coverage. Insurance will save your ass when that happens.

It really depends. But the advantage of vision insurance is that you can literally math out the value day 1.

My wife and I come out ahead, but we have specific needs for glasses that make our lenses more expensive. But if you break even you are coming out ahead by not paying taxes. Just gotta make sure to get a new pair of glasses every year.

Yeah, we used ours when we bought our house. The benefit is inexpensive enough that it saved us a ton, and it still offers us discounts on lawyers for things that aren't just covered.

OK thanks everyone, after making sure i was happy with my current will I think we'll forego it but good to know it is at least handy for next time we have a planned legal expenses.
