The bonsai is great. It was the first of the botanicals my partner got and now I think we have them all except the ugly cornucopia and if you count the botanical pavilion one

    Tits I! Tis I!

The Steam Deck case was specifically because you said that you currently spend most of your time on the Deck and this case is far better than the default one that the Deck comes with in my opinion. As soon as I got this case for myself I tossed the original case into the box and haven't looked at it since. I love that instead of having a stupid indent on the bottom you actually have a compartment for the charging cable that can hold multiple accessories. Also the built in kickstand/screen cover/MicroSD Card holder is nice.

The Nitty credit was because you said you are a huge Nintendo fan, and if you are a huge fan I don't know which games you'd already have, so rather than gamble I'll let you pick a new one.

The chocolate is just chocolate. Don't read too much into it, or do, whatever I'm not the boss of you. Solve the maybe mystery and win absolutely nothing, or a new car, or not. Oooooh.

I'm sorry to say that there was an intended second part to your gift, but unfortunately it relied on some third parties coming through with some special effort, which they were unable to make work before Christmas. I'm a little bummed because it was supposed to round out your gifts. Though, I just want to say, if they do end up following through belatedly then I'll make sure to mail it out after the fact.

How do these after market cases compare to the original Steam Deck carrying case? I think I saw the new OLED model comes with a slimmer case?

The top-tier 1TB OLED comes with a case that appears the same as other OLED/LCD Deck included cases, except the inner shell part can be detached and used on its own as a "compact" Deck case. Frees up more space if you're chucking it in another bag/backpack/etc.

Hmm. I know it's probably for security reasons but the OG Steam Deck case is so bulky when I'm just throwing it in my bag for travel reasons.

It's chonky, no question. A slimline alternative for it going in other bags is a sound idea.

The case in question is slightly thicker than the default Deck case, I don't know how it compares to the new OLED case with its removable inner case. In exchange for being slightly thicker it is much more feature rich and has far more storage capability.

The only thing I store is an extra power brick with detachable USB C cable in the little pocket behind the strap on the case.

Not sure what I'd need a second, slimmer case for.

I got home last night from a trip to visit family to find a package waiting! I was a bit worried because it looked like Ace Ventura had handled the delivery but it turned out everything inside was safe!

Here's the bounty I received from my generous Santa!
Prior to tearing into things, here's the amazing spread of items! What a great job of wrapping!
    531hutcmv9ad.jpeg

Okay, time to start ruining some paper...let's start with this heavy one.
    4kotryvr7ei1.jpeg
Oh my! This looks amazing! I've never heard of this stuff so I can't wait to try it!

Next, I worked my way to this big tall one...
    ujncbh9akvvt.jpeg
Yes! I am not a big fan of syrup EXCEPT when it's pure maple! I LOVE this! Just need to figure out a good hiding spot to protect it from the kids...

And what do we have here?
    w4shgoxpvj5d.jpeg
I'm sensing a theme... :) Another fun food I'd never seen before, but who can say no to truffles! Okay, I already ate two of these because...yeah...they are delicious.

So, what's in the last, biggest package? An entire maple tree??
    xirvpn6so02f.jpeg
Holy crap! It's a Retroid Pocket 3+! I'd actually never heard of this thing but I was immediately floored by how amazing it is! I've dabbled in the world of retro-gaming but never really gone down the portable side of things and this thing is like the Porsche of that genre! Android-based with full Google Play, beautiful screen, excellent controls...and I have no idea what I'm doing. I fired it up and told it to install all of the million apps it comes pre-loaded with (I recognized Dolphin and RetroArch) and then stared. Time to google a dummy guide to this thing! I can't wait to really get stuck in on it!

Thank you SO much @Naphtali ! These were all amazing gifts! You've made Satan proud with your work this year!

Quick update: The Truffles are gone. I didn't share. I also discovered that I could make pseudo-truffles by combining a chocolate bar and maple cream. These I did share and they were a hit. :) As for the Pocket 3+, holy CRAP but this is a rabbit-hole. I've been Alice'ing the crap out of it and have successfully played some GBA Mario Kart! I'm slowly but surely getting things set up how I enjoy them, testing various front-ends, etc. Such a cool device!

A strange box appeared at my doorstep. Not knowing what to expect, I had my best people examine it for traps...

    g60eshghcxbc.jpeg
    "Hmmm...smells like cardboard..."

    aga34100azkm.jpeg
    "All clear sir!"

With the contents deemed safe, I delved inside...
    z9ohjqwuqktt.jpeg

The prequel novel to the Hunger Games series. My wife and I both read the original books but didn't know another book had released until we saw a trailer for the movie adaption. I thought it was Hollywood milking the franchise and was surprised to find out it was based off a new book.

    Yet, there was more...
    k87wr1lw5ak8.jpeg

Ah, a tome of rare and mythical knowledge. I'm sure the whole family will get a kick out of this one.

But as I was writing this post, I was informed that another box had arrived! Again, I went to my specialist...
    5zm7lz2g6kx4.jpeg
"I'm not doing this shit again. Open the damn box."

    Inside was yet another book!
    ibn6m9od7vwi.jpeg

The Ruination! I admit, I've never played any LoL and only know anything about the universe via the Legends of Runeterra card game. During the Ruination event, this book and a RPG came out to cross-market the whole event across all their games. I heard the book was a good read.

Looks like I have quite a bit of new stuff to read. Which to be fair, I haven't had a book to read in a long time, so this is doubly nice.

There was notes inside, but no signatures. Secret Santa, reveal yourself!

I am glad you got your books! Usually I would wait for you to get your final package which has the note from me in it, but Amazon says it is now running an additional 2 days late (it was already late) so I am feeling doubtful it will reach you, but worry not if or when that happens I shall re-order it and send it your way. Hello,

Due to the mailing of the gifts to the address from last year's Santee, it seemed it was delayed which was all good. It finally arrived as the holidays are done so it just extended the season for myself and my kids who always look forward to Secret Santa.

    So here goes:

    First the almighty box:
    kuqo16nreg4q.jpg

It showed up without warning so I was a bit surprised. I got a notice the the gift was coming pre-Christmas through USPS buuuut it was heading towards California. I thought it was going to the Santa and then heading to me. It just took a detour.

    Enclosed was the letter:
    7ysdod899mou.jpg

    Gift #1:
    w1n2m94fv3hc.jpg

I have never read this series though I have heard about it. It's something that I've been meaning to read over and over again but never got around to actually doing it. Now that it is here and staring at me, I have no choice but to read it. Eventually, as my daughter has claimed it and wants to read it. We will see who gets to read it first.

    Gift #2:
    vfqrxju2v1wp.jpg

This is really really cool. It lights up and shows off Boba Fett in all his glory. I have it on my bookshelf near my bed so I can turn it on at night and bask in the illumination. The things you can do with the 3d printing. Wow.

    Gift #3:
    z7ymml4cebnp.jpg
    9qolcqe5vuon.jpg

Both are amazing pieces of work. I love the helmet print with all the colors and I also love the gray 3d sculpt of Boba Fett as well. You can never have too much Boba Fett merch.

    Gift #4:
    ylnrzh5r1gcm.jpg

I was introduced to Slap Ya Mama a couple years back through the Secret Santa and now I have another seasoning to try out. I've gone through a lot of the Slap Ya Mama and I'm thinking I'm going to use this as well. I do love spicy seasoning.

    Gift #5:

My youngest loves Roblox and also loves Robux. He claimed the code ASAP and used it to buy a quake upgrade on one of the multitude of games that he plays on it. He said thank you a lot.

    Gift #6:
    olb35ax4xwat.jpg
    l2zbn7e37e48.jpg

Someone is such a good dog. Gypsy is eleven and still is so prancey around. She sat with baited breath for the treat and then immediately rushed off to eat it.

    Gift #7:

DELAYED. I get why it was delayed. I have an idea what it is and why it is delayed as shipping can be a real pain for this type of item due to where it is coming from. My daughter has the patience and knows she will love it when it finally arrives. Thank you in advance!

    Random 3d!
    zlstfbi3l5h5.jpg
    2igihce5gcw0.jpg

I love the Ahsoka coloring. It is fantastic to look at in person. My daughter has claimed the unicorn and is thinking of using it as a key-chain so I'm going to have to get a ring for it. She absolutely is fascinated by the shimmery colors on it.

    The final placement:
    ezu5rk6qun0t.jpg
    vlrq9zd8s78p.jpg

@Kendrik I believe this is from you. I blocked out the name at first thinking it was a RL name but going through the listing of Secret Santas I see your name there. I'm too lazy to retake the pic but THANK YOU!!! All the homemade items are unbelievable. The time and the effort and the cost. Just Thank you. I so appreciate this every year and am blown away by the thoughtfulness of the people here. Words just can't express how much this means to me. I love Boba Fett and love that I am able to add to my collection every year.

Thank you. thank you. thank you.

I considered Slap ya mama in my gift package, but Tony's was what I grew up on so I went with that. Both are amazing spices, though, and I consider one or the other a "must have" spice on any shelf. Hell, when I spent a month in the Alaskan interior in a canoe we brought one spice: Tony's. I bet the astronauts keep it in stock on the ISS.

I found it, it was 2014 I received it. Ten years ago! That's terrifying:

    https://forums.penny-arcade.com/discussion/comment/31159876#Comment_31159876

I'd only just adopted my daughter at that point, she's now nearly 11 years old and a firm gamer. I've also managed to shed a wife in that time (through divorce, not through uxoricide) and am now a single Dad. Yay progress!

Going through that thread is just like a time capsule of memories. 65 pages of glorious Christmas goodness.

That year I got a whole bunch of awesome puzzles I struggled with from my Santa to reveal my gifts, they were excellent. I'd be much better now, numerous puzzle books and escape rooms have enhanced those skills.

(Santa was @TheRoadVirus who no longer exists as a user, which makes me sad - but thanks for my introduction to Slap Ya Mama!)

My santa went crazy and got me a new hobby!

First order of business when a package arrives is to assemble a crack team of package investigators (gratuitous picture of pets):
    dhnbv25.jpeg

    Seems mostly all clear:
    e7thMfx.jpeg

Nothing of note for the pigs, so they grumpily move on to eating hay and we find a silicone mold! Neat!
    eg5o1fg.jpeg

Checking this big box, and it's a vacuum chamber!
    XTfmHrT.jpeg

It's all starting to make sense:
    4XhRg0m.jpeg

Not pictured is a box of micah powder in some kick ass colors! Looking forward to diving into them. Also some resin, which is handy because I didn't have much on hand, and it was super old and the lid had fused together.

Here's my first attempt. Which if you've ever tried anything new, your first attempt is awful. Things will go wrong:
    rBumVhu.jpeg

Really sells the need for the vacuum chamber/pump. It's a bit smoky, so I'll need to use it at the makerspace, or wait till the weather warms up and use it outside, but clearly this shows the need for it:
    aA6i1fz.jpeg

Thanks so much Santa @Handkor I'm actually pretty excited about this. My wife works at the library and the library runs a D&D group, and I'd like to try and make a library themed dice set (using the library logo colors) to give to the organizers along with a dice box with the library logo lasered on top. I'm sure I'll play around with doing other stuff as well.

Also the vacuum chamber is perfect for the CNC hobby as well. I've had some wood fall apart on me in projects and I can use the vacuum chamber to stablize some wood and be less scared of ruining something. Seriously I didn't work on a project for like 4 months because I was so frustrated that a portion of spalted (partially rotted) wood had fallen apart on me at the last steps of a project.

I swear I remember that guy being like a nerdy wolf with anxiety not a furry sex god

Does that happen further than I watched?

The right combination of shy and nerdy can be really endearing, and it would be a lie to say that he isn't in really good shape.

    A mysterious package arrives!

For the second year in a row my package inspector is asleep on the job, so I am forced to open them with no assurance of safety

This is fine right? Nothing ominous here.

It was fine! It was in fact gifts!

The Final Fantasy 7 Piano Collection music book. Some really good arrangements in this one.
Things To Make And Do In The 4th Dimension by Matt Parker. A book I've had on my list for a while ever since I found his youtube channel.
And Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. I do love me a Mystery Dungeon.
(The cards on the game and the math book were swapped and I spent longer than was strictly necessary trying to figure out the secret code tying Growlithe to math before checking to see if the other ones went together.)

    Thanks @Romanian My Escutcheon

Many, many thanks to Radiation for what I am told are merely the first bits of a much, much cooler present to come, once some scheduling problems on my end are worked out. :D Y'all will just have to wait to see how cool it is.

These are both games that I was, like, a hair's breadth from just grabbing during the sale.

"merely the first bits of a much, much cooler present to come"

    And were they!

Okay, first off, I've only made it a little ways into the game because I haven't had nearly as much gaming time recently for Reasons (TM), but Midnight Suns is fantastic. A+ game.

Anyway, on Saturday, after carefully arranging child care, the remainder of my present "arrived"!

@Radiation had invited me to join him at a class at a local glass art school, where we got to learn how to make what are called "coral bowls." So, he'd noted that I made stained glass stuff, and thought this, since it was stained glass adjacent, would be fun thing to try. Basically, fused glass is where you take pieces of stained glass, lay them out in a nice pattern, and then heat them up so that they melt into each other; then you let them cool. Once they're cool, you put them back in a kiln, on top of a (usually plaster of some kind) form and heat them up just a little bit so they get soft and reshape themselves to match what they're resting on. Then, pop them off, and you've got a crazy piece of glass art! I guess a standard coral bowl looks something like:

The first fusing is where a lot of the fun in this kind of art happens, because sometimes the glass pieces just melt together and kind of blend colors, and sometimes they layer, and sometimes in the heat they undergo weird reactions and you get completely different colors. It depends on the temperatures, the glass you picked, how long it's in the kiln - so until you've used specific pieces before in the same way, you'll never be quite sure what you're going to end up with. As our instructor, who was a hoot, said, "It's not trial and error; it's trial and surprise!"

Anyway, we had several hours, all the scrap glass we could get our hands on, our choice of plaster forms, and half a kiln sheet to just do whatever we wanted to.

Ridiculously awesome class - good vibes from all and sundry. There were ... 7? ... students, and we all did very, very different things - with, funnily enough, most of the students putting a lot of time and effort into their first layout, and then, with the remaining minutes of the class, just kinda throwing something else together. And everyone had very, very different approaches to what they wanted to make. I started with ...

... and I ended up making two, as well. My "pre-fused glass layout" looks a little something like:

First piece (if it turns out at all like I expected ... :D ) is ...

... a riverbed / aquarium, with little abstract fishies swimming in the currents; this one'll be for my wife. It's square, and the form I picked is a wavy plate. My second piece ...

    02av9gy697wf.jpg

... was just a riff on some fiery colors (with a cranberry-ish pink base that was just too pretty to pass up) in a more standard bowl shape.

I have to go back to the shop in a couple of weeks to pick them up and see how they turned out. I. Cannot. Wait.

    But that's not all!

@Radiation is also a woodsmith of no small skill and, as he posted above, he's got a resin-casting pressure pot, too, and he used those skills to make me ...

    ljjhz8k2b4yu.jpg

A weighted companion cube from one of my favorite games, complete with bottle opener!

And in the other wooden box ...

    9cppyuqkougo.jpg

Homemade dice in my favorite color, one of the firstfruits of his new toy! I think they'll turn out to work just fine.

Thank you so, so much @Radiation - that was one amazing Secret Santaing, and I can't wait to see how everyone's pieces turn out. Merry Christmas!
