That's a book that seems like it works best for New Yorkers. I appreciated it well enough, but I felt like it was just written for someone else.

It is why I am fully supportive of Sydney iconography being used to represent Australia in media, even if it is a bit tedious.

Because if bad things go down Sydney is the first place someone is going to think of aiming a giant meteor.

Look, long island is just a long fucking island.

I biked the whole thing once. It's like the idyllic mix of farm houses and tiny farms and fresh produce except lots of it costs a obscene amounts. It's like rich people cosplaying as a farm town.

    Great to travel through!

The most amusing thing to me was how you could tell where the new money stopped and the old money started because the new money wanted designer outlets and the old money didn't want any of that shit

Why is there so much of what appears to be actual greenery east of Queens?

Yeah, that’s Long Island. Which Queens is technically part of, but don’t refer to Queens as “Long Island” unless you wanna get punched.

The further east you go the more it just becomes beach/shore towns.

Go far enough, and you get to abandoned biohazard research labs and nuclear missile installations. (This is not a joke.)

As someone who grew up in the NYC metro area, it's always fun to watch preconceptions of the area that people have run into reality. Probably the most fun is watching people learn about how "upstate" is very much a state of mind.

"Upstate" is definitely a term where the in-group is flexible relative to who you're asking, like generally the Hudson River Valley is especially adamant about not being upstate

Rochester resident here, and I've definitely heard this area referred to as "upstate" even though we're at about the halfway point North-wise. I've also heard "western NY" though, which is definitely more accurate.

"Down east" is kinda similar in NC. If you're in Raleigh then a quarter of the state could be down east. But you could be in Cape Carteret, about as far down and east as you can be and people will still say that down east is further on.
