It’s not that I want The Boys to be subtle, it’s just the satire this season had a little too many pointless referential quotes. And that can sometimes be fun peppered in amongst more interesting or meaningful stuff, but this season there was just a bit too many empty calories. a direct line as a throwaway “I know that reference!” without anything more substantial or interesting to twist or add can get a bit stale
And overall I like when they parody or use satire to reflect our world, but when they just straight up say a famous name from our world it can take me out of it. The world of The Boys is markedly different from ours, so too many direct references to famous people or some recent politicians gaff tends to take me out of it.
As an example there’s a character that’s basically the equivalent of “The AOC of the Boys world”, and so when that character talks about speaking with AOC it kind of needles my brain and breaks my immersion, and especially when it’s not used to really say or do anything.

It really did only feel like a handful of small amongst 8 hours of television so I wasn't really thinking it was too much.
I totally get how it can take someone out of it though given the particular subject matter here.
But a handful of lines amongst the entirety of everything else isnt gonna be what I'm putting my main focus on.
Like AOC has now been said more in this conversation than in the show so ya know *shug*.
Previous discussions in the thread convinced me to go back and do a series re-watch of LOST. We're up to the 5th season now and the whole thing has been a bit of a trip. Some random observations:
- This show is wildly unkind to it's female characters
- Jack is a piece of shit
- SO many episodes about someone wanting to go chase some sort of animal around the jungle
- Previously I thought that the show started taking a dive in S3. I now kind of think that's when the show starts getting the most interesting.
- The show's pov on the concept of disability is right out of the stone age. Some of the conversations about Hurley's weight and what being in a wheelchair is like are just kind of hard to watch.
- Michael's character gets done SO dirty
- The whole
Oceanic 6 needing to lie about the island when they get back to the mainland is a plot point that is really stupid and makes no sense at all.
- Outside of the above point, I think the story does make more narrative sense than I had previously given it credit for.
So for those of you who don't watch anime, there's been some recent CRAZY leaks in terms of shows being released before their air dates as test footage. It started with folks thinking it was just the first couple episodes of Dandadan, and the Ranma remake, but it's since expanded to include RE: Zero season 3, Terminator Zero, Heartstopper season 3, Spellbound, Arcane season 2, and Plankton: The Movie, among others.
Source of the leak has been found - a hacker who gained access to Iyuno's dubbing/subtitling online platform. Iyuno are involved with the dubbing and captioning of Netflix, Amazon, Warner Bros, Paramount, NBC Universal, Riot, Mattel, and BBC shows.
They apparently downloaded 83,000 files, so we're probably at the tip of the iceberg right now.
So...uh....assume spoilers are in the wild for basically anything which might be at that stage of production.
There's also the outside chance we might see something like Coyote vs Acme, who knows
Been watching Sunny with an Apple TV trial, and it's fun so far. A woman's husband and child go missing, then she's mysteriously gifted a talking robot, who teams up with her to search for the truth. Also they built a real robot for this instead of using CG, so it actually looks good!
Does it get lighter? The first episode was some real tragedy porn.

Episode 2 contains what could best be described as a MGS stealth section.

I'm on ep 4 or 5? Can't remember which. I would say, that while it has moments of humor, it does not get lighter. It does lean more into the mystery/whodunit genre though.
I think it's good, but I also feel like it's a little emotionally heavy for me a lot of times.
But I'm someone that doesnt like a lot of shows because of that.
My wife and I started rewatching (just watching for me) Letterkenny. I had previously watched the first episode of it and some scenes here and there and didn't care for it but I gave it another shot after watching Shoresy, which I loved.
So far I stand by my original opinion for season 1. It's not great. It definitely knows where it wants to go but doesn't know how to get there. Season 2 figured it out though. We're finishing season 3 and I enjoy it quite a bit. Obviously not as polished as Shoresy and doesn't have the heart weaved in as finely but it's still a hoot.
Even though I didn't care for it originally, I did always love Shoresy's exchanges with Reilly and Jonesy and also the hockey coach. Happy to say those things are still my favorite bits.

How necessary is season 1? If I wanted to, would skipping right to S2 work?
I think it's probably fine. But season 1 is also only 6 episodes so it goes by pretty quick.

Absolutely every episode of letterkenny is fine to watch as a standalone self contained thing.
The benefit you get otherwise is just more familiarity with the characters and their personalities in general, and the slightest whiff of continuity.
It’s kinda like Seinfeld, in that way.

I watched the first episode of season 3 of The Bear. Thought it was well shot, gorgeous, evocative, and emotional, all without a single word being spoken. A real neat high concept episode, which isn't too shocking for a show that's done some really wild stuff.
And then I was talking to a buddy about it, and maybe you already see where this is going.
"...I'm sorry, did you say no dialogue?"
"Yeah, no spoken dialogue. It was really cool. Really let you fill in the emotion of the scenes through body language."
"Uh... What?"
"You know, like when a show uses another language but doesn't subtitle it because they want you to get the point of the conversation without words."
"Dude, it had plenty of dialogue, what are you talking about?"
Well, apparently my stream on Hulu fucked up and completely cut out the dialogue channel, leaving all the sound effects, foley work, and background music and what I assumed was a bold stylistic choice was just a streaming service glitch.
Fuck it, I still think my version is better.

They really would burn down the Library of Alexandria a second time because an accountant told them it would save money on their taxes. You love to see it.

Look on the bright side, at least all those cartoons are on Max and definitely aren't regularly getting deleted from there as well

Between this and Game Informer it's just a banner week for wholesale destruction of cultural history.

I spent a lot of time on the Cartoon Network website as a young boy, in part because of flash games and also that thing where you could decorate a diorama with collectible digital sticker type things? That was absolutely rad, I loved that
But as much as I think these things are worthy of some amount of preservation we can maybe tone our rhetoric down a little
They could so easily have said "we are taking this website down in one month" for both GI and CN. The reason they didn't is the reason they fully deserve the harshest rhetoric. They took ownership of something they had nothing to do with the popularity and reputation of, had no respect for it, and destroyed it completely, in record time.

In his defense, I personally witnessed a time when Kevin Sorbo stuck up for a black man against white people.
The NZ summer, Feb 1995 when my character, #Xena was introduced into my husband’s show, ‘Hercules the Legendary Journeys’. We actors were sitting around and I brought up a news item. I said, “Guys, did you guys hear about that woman and her friend who were brutally murdered in LA? I think maybe the footballer did it!” And Peanut growled: “Hey! I knew Nicole and let me tell you… she was no picnic!”
BOOM
We were all gobsmacked. I said, “She didn’t deserve to be stabbed to death. He replied, “I’m just saying, She was a piece of work.” It stuck in my mind because those Americanisms were unusual to us. But we knew what he meant.

I mean the rhetoric is "it really sucks that soulless executives are willing to slash and burn every single extant cultural touchstone to save a few bucks on the monthly spreadsheet" so I'm not sure what part of that needs toning down

And while there was a solid battle for MVP of the series, one character dominated the LVP block.
After 42 sessions and 121 episodes of Lost, Boone had four LVP votes, Kate secured silver with seven LVP votes, and Jack Shepard absolutely secured the Least Valuable Person for the series with twelve votes.
