I didn't think we'd ever get new music from DREAMCAR after the news that No Doubt is getting back together, but on the eve of that happening, they just dropped an EP of new music, and it's extremely fucking good.
For the uninitiated, DREAMCAR is Davey Havok from AFI backed by all the people in No Doubt not named Gwen Stefani, and they make music that sounds absolutely nothing like either band. They're primarily new wave power pop with a hint of synth-wave moodiness and their debut album from a few years ago is stellar and in pretty much constant rotation for me.
The new EP has a couple of new tracks and a Bowie cover. Check it out:

Free Palestine: A Compilation for Humanitarian Aid
The situation we’re witnessing in Gaza is heartbreaking. While the world watches, over 30,000 innocent Palestinian people, many of whom were children, have been killed and over 70,000 more injured in attacks since October 7th. Homes, neighbourhoods and cities have been destroyed, and most of the population has been displaced and left without food, clean drinking water, electricity and fuel.
The UK government has continued to allow Israel’s bombardment in the region and chosen not to back consistent calls for a ceasefire, despite the overwhelming majority of the UK public being in favour.
In an effort to raise money for Palestinian aid charities, I’ve reached out to lots of talented artists who have kindly contributed their music to this incredibly important cause.
Sonically it traverses chugging electronics, proto electro, Italo dance, UK techno and leftfield bass from artists like JD Twitch, Ambien Baby, Lisene, GoodMostlyBad and Azo, all of whom are joining our call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
FREE PALESTINE.
All proceeds from the compilation will be split 50/50 between two charities who are working hard to provide support and humanitarian aid in Gaza: Medical Aid Palestine and War Child UK.
Eternal thanks to Jeena Ra for creating this beautiful artwork and to Justin Drake for lending his mastering skills to the project.
!!! FROM MARCH 2024 you can ONLY send us a receipt of your own donation to PCRF to our e-mail womenofnoise@gmail.com in order to receive a download code for the album.
All proceeds for this charity compilation were donated to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund.
Our hearts go out to those affected by the ongoing situation. Our compilation, though a small gesture that does not remotely address the complexity of the issue, aims to raise funds for Gaza's people amidst the stark reality of an oppressively imbalanced struggle. Marked by widespread destruction and critical shortages of food, water, and electricity, the situation in Gaza is dire. Our focus is on providing aid where the international community has fallen short. Our efforts stand firmly in support of an immediate cease-fire and in response to an urgent need for relief.
We have decided to select two charities, donating 100% of our proceeds equally between them:
Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF) - www.pcrf.net/about-us
Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) - www.map.org.uk/about-map/about-map
A sincere thank you to all the artists who have contributed, and to Tawfiq Dawi for helping us out with the artwork. The solidarity and support in our community is humbling to see.
We know that music seems frivolous in a time like this, but we are just using it as a means to get money to Palestinian charities. Please encourage everyone you know to give directly to the PCRF or a similar Palestinian charity—if you fund a Palestinian charity send us a screenshot and we will give you this EP for free. This is a small gesture, but lots of small gestures add up. We need to diplomatically and economically isolate Israel. Israeli Apartheid needs to end. Free Palestine and fund Palestine!

A quick lesson on the anti-apartheid origins of Ska from J.E.R. of Skatune Network:
It is the least ska thing to stay silent during a genocide. It is the least ska thing to support an apartheid state.
Since it’s inception, ska has been fundamentally intertwined with politics. The music was birthed from Jamaican independence from their colonizers. The artists who pioneered the genre stood against violence inflicted by a colonizer, apartheid state.
On his 1977 record, equal rights, Peter Tosh sings
“Everyone is talking about crime
Tell me who are the criminals?
Palestine is fighting for Equal rights and justice“
Historically, ska has sided itself on the right side of history. Make sure you do too! From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free!

Brojob released a new single today, and while I've been following their new singer for awhile on Instagram I haven't actually listened to any of their music before. The song's about blowjobs and jizz, and it's pretty heavy. Looking forward to more from them!
But my first string was not ringing right on the first couple of frets (F and F#) with no sustain at all and I looked at it and like, the string was basically touching those first two frets or damn close to it.
Makes me think maybe the notch is cut too deep in the nut actually?
But after giving it a little anti clockwise movement of like a 8th to a quarter turn it is at least ringing out again. I am beginning to worry it's too humid in here to store it in my room? I dunno
The intonation needs work too everything past the octave is slightly sharp and more noticeable closer to the 24th fret you get. Not that I'm ever playing in that part of the neck I'm not that good haha. So it's rarely a problem.
You can check nut slot depth by pressing the string down at the 3rd fret and checking the height over the 1st fret. It should have just a sliver of space. In my experience, most nut slots from production guitars are actually too high.
As for the humidity in your space, it's probably fine. Guitars are stored in poorly climate managed warehouses and stores for months. It's probably just that time of year when the weather is changing significantly and the neck is gonna react to that.

I have begun recording some ideas for a little ditty. Perhaps in several months when I have enough ideas and have it them together and learned how to program drums and also mix and master I will post it for you all to listen to.
Dream Theater almost happened last year, but it was too close to my daughter's due date.
Better try like hell for the next one, then. Given their previous touring volume with Portnoy in the battery, I anticipate the 40th Anniversary tour lasting till one of the five breaks a hip or strokes out on stage.

No it's a solid body, schecter Omen extreme in a blue cloud burst finish.
I do think those look cool though. I wonder how different it makes the sound as I have never played one.
Anyway I need to practice more again, I really want to go back to lessons still too because I'm kinda stalled out for how to move forward in my playing as there's so many paths to learning more.
I also need to get over the hump of trying to learn to play along with full songs without getting intimidated by it.
Edit to be clear I know I'm responding to a joke post but eh whenever
The was she switches from singing normal to the really deep yelling or back at the drop of a hat is absolutely insane to me
Just googled her since I didn't remember her last name. She's apparently like my age which is a little odd to me for some reason. I always assume people who are that talented would be older than me.

I know folks have (largely deserved) opinions about Pitchfork, but they have this one REALLY cool recurring feature that I wish more people about, where every Sunday they take a look at a historically-significant (in some music critic's estimation) album. They examine the cultural and industry context around the album, where it slots into an artist's catalog/reputation, the pieces are always REALLY interesting even (maybe especially?) when they're about artists/albums I don't know much about. Fantastic feature.
I got to see Rosegarden Funeral Party open for Night Club here this last weekend and dang they put on a great show. Intimate venue. They have a great 80's goth vibe that hits just right.

Look. I got thoughts about this, and I actually published a piece a few years back about this exact topic, so I'm gonna rant a little bit.
Courtney Love is truly one of god's own prototypes. It's easy to let the misadventures of Courtney Love (punching Kathleen Hanna in the face, calling Cypress Hill "a bunch of pussies", her relationships with people like Kurt Cobain, Trent Reznor, and Billy Corgan, talking shit about Olivia Rodrigo, etc) color your perceptions and overshadow things, but beyond all that she's one of the most talented and important songwriters of her generation.
Every record is absolutely vital. Live Through This is a perfect record and in another world where it wasn't overshadowed by the specter of the literal and figurative death of Grunge, it would have been instantly received as a modern classic. It offers an uncompromising and unfiltered female point of view on trauma that traditionally just didn't get play in Rock and Roll at the time, and even with all the doors it kicked down it still got relegated to the sidelines as an "angry chick record" by radio stations and reviewers. Or "that record that Kurt probably wrote", which is, of course, more misogynist bullshit -- any dipshit who bothers to listen to Hole's discography is going to immediately recognize the throughline of Courtney Love's singular voice, with (at most) the barest hint of the pop sensibilities of Cobain's songwriting. Love's point of view in almost all of her best writing has always been driven by clear, righteous anger and lived experiences that shares very little with Kurt's Burroughs-esque disjointed poetry.
Celebrity Skin is another record that's just incredibly unfairly maligned. It existed at the wrong time in the popular culture to really connect like the first two records, but it's also just a front-to-back collection of songs that should make most bands jealous. The title track is a mirror polished pop song dressed up in grunge riffs that tackles the dark side of fame and the industry that reduces young women to a constant churn of pretty faces and eye catching cover art. It's a towering piece of craft that evokes Dante Gabriel Rossetti to give a middle finger to vicious, predatory industry. And that's not even getting into tracks like "Boys on the Radio", "Malibu", and especially "Awful" which follows similar themes and prove that Courtney's songwriting chops and razor sharp tongue aren't a fluke.
Not only does Hole have a frankly peerless discography, but her solo record absolutely fucking rips and has more attitude than most shit written by people half her age.
From "Mono", off her solo record America's Sweetheart:
"Well they say that rock is dead
They're probably right
Ninety-nine girls in the pit
Did it have to come to this?
Oh god you owe me one more song
So I can prove to you that I am so much better than him"
It wouldn't be Courtney Love if she wasn't willing to stare down her own legacy and spit in the face of her detractors. And you know what? That rules.
And Courtney's right, of course. It's just taken a lot of people way too long to realize it. I'll argue any day of the week that Hole's influence is still rippling through modern feminist rock music more than almost any other band of the grunge era. She may not be solely responsible, but there's a clear fucking line that starts at Pretty on the Inside and continues past Hole's discography, right through bands like Mannequin Pussy, Paramore, Amyl and the Sniffers, Weakened Friends, Olivia Rodrigo, Fresh, Charly Bliss, Screaming Females, Bully, and Destroy Boys. She talks a lot of shit, but she's one of a rare breed who can actually back it up.
So yeah, do I think Taylor Swift is great in her own right? Of course. She's a fantastic pop songwriter and she's very important to a lot of people. But if Courtney Love wants to talk shit about her she's earned that right and is better equipped to kick that beehive than anyone on the planet.
God bless Courtney Love. We don't deserve her, but that never stopped her.

Where else are you going to put your G string?
Depends. Does your guitar have F-holes?
