Mobile site broken

DouglasDangerDouglasDanger PennsylvaniaRegistered User regular
I'm using chrome on my phone. The mobile site won't load properly. It loads like this:

I'm not sure if my image will upload correctly

It's a list on a white back ground.

The desktop version works fine.

I've cleared my cookies and reloaded the page multiple times.

iOS Safari, broken here too, only the mobile site. If I force desktop/full, it works fine (but is suboptimal since it's not the mobile version).

To my ancient HTML eyes, it looks like the CSS for mobile stopped loading/parsing, so we are just getting the raw HTML without styling.

Was working this morning, so it broke sometime on 2/14/24, for reference.

Just as a reminder, if you choose to go to the full site via the link at the top, you can revert back with a small link to the mobile site at the bottom

Yes, but when it gets fixed, this is just a reminder of how to switch back, as it's not immediately obvious.

Comparing the two, the problem seems to be because (only) on mobile it tries to retrieve https://forums.penny-arcade.com/asset/less/mobile/style-6ff5dfdb.css?v=65cda01f and gets a 500 back.

(Most of the stylesheets are the same between mobile and desktop; there's a couple of other stylesheets that are different, but that's the specific one which is failing)

I'm aware of the problem, and I'm looking into it. I suspect there was an update to our forum software and what we do for our mobile site isn't compatible

If you've got a big phone you can, at least on Chrome on Android, set it to display the desktop site which works

It isn't horrible to navigate, honestly... Plus I have learned that threads have points! These aren't usually surfaced, and I assume they are a representation of agrees and awesomes.

The long story short on this stuff is that we're using an outdated version of their forum software that they don't especially support anymore, and one of the primary things that's outdated is the mobile version of the site. We've been working on a new redesign, and...well, this is the sort of thing that accelerates those plans.

Would increasing the number of subscribers or amount of individual subscriptions help?

I'm sure several of us on the forums are webdevs. Anything we can do to help?

as an aside, does anyone know what the "points" section of the thread listing refers to here?

It doesn't seem to correspond to the reaction points system, as far as I can tell.

Not to back seat web dev, but is it possible to revert our mobile customizations in the meantime? Like just have it use the desktop styles, or always return desktop by default?

@zek if you don't have a "use desktop version" button in your browser (Android Chrome has one in the hamburger menu on the top-right) there's also a button you can press right on the mobile view which will give you desktop view mode. crtl-f for "full site"

While I'm not going to sit here and say that nobody should sign up for Club PA or subscribe on Twitch, we already have the go ahead on this. PA's also got designers and people who can help out on that end (you may have noticed the main site redesign that went live recently). It's just a matter of getting it done.

Points are awarded when a thread has punched it into the endzone, kicked a field goal, or recorded a safety

The points beside the post are the number of agrees and awesomes. Some sort of hold over from a different version of vanilla. I assume for threads that is the number on the first post.
