[Graduation] Gifts?

MegaMan001MegaMan001 CRNARochester, MNRegistered User regular
Attention young people and recent grads, what is the going rate for money in terms of graduation gifts?

Or, what are good graduation gifts other than money?

A firm handshake and a loose bootstrap.

The gift I got that was best for me was just a bunch of essentials for living on your own. A blanket, a couple of towels, the kind of stuff you don't know you need when you've been living with your parents your whole life.

I basically wanted money because I was saving up for a laptop.

The going rate would depend on how closely you're related to or know them.

the bootstrap can provide a few meals if you boil it
plastic bootstraps are probably the best value, economical

What level of graduation are we talking about here?
Just saying, there's a bit of difference if we're talking "Graduated from third grade" or "got a PHD" when it comes to celebratory gifting.

Wait you get GIFTS when you finish your PhD? I've been robbed.

Naw I paid off my student loans from undergrad while I was in grad school. Biomedical science PhDs are paid positions with tuition covered by the lab you work in. It's not *much* money, but you're not accruing more debt from tuition.

    Graduated from third grade?

    A sheet of fun stickers.

    Got a PhD?

A sheet of fun stickers that say PhD for you to stick on all the things that have your name on them.

I might have had a nice dinner paid for me after my PhD, I can't really recall.
Undergrad I don't think we made even that big a deal of.

When one of my best friends graduated with his Ph.D. in Bioterror Defense, I got him a sword. Like, a real one, not a mall sword. I had a really great write-up for it, too.

The sheet cake will actually be one of Cheryl Blossom's fursona paintings.

I got nothing, and I have graduated more than once. I don’t understand the concept of it and I kind of rejected several gifts as I’m like why do I need a thing, I’m getting a thing.

I understand I am the outlier in this idea.

Legitimately though, I would recommend some heirloom jewellery, a trip out to a fancy restaurant that they would never choose, holiday to a place, or a tattoo.

Go for something they can keep for a long time or a memory pretty much. Cash or a laptop world be appreciated but at the same time I doubt they’re really gong to be thinking about the gift when it gets slow and needs to be replaced.

Yeah they are going to college planning on marketing / graphic design.

She's always been in our orbit, but we aren't super close or anything so I feel like cash is the way to go?

    Oh, for high school ...

One of the best presents I got, from my grandmother, was a good leather briefcase. It's still serviceable, mumble years later.

I think $50-$100 is a common range? I always prefer to give personal gifts :) I was struggling finding my little brother a gift and last minute I found a [.url=lol no]tanto sword for sale[.url] and I knew it was the perfect choice. I recommend choosing something that aligns with their interests and future plans.

there have been a few of this type so far, lurk making plausible posts with chatgpt for a few months then drop some links into them every once in a while. They all have a sort of "only vaguely in context with the conversation" feel that is standing out more each time I see one.

Bookmarking this for when I finish my masters. I think I was given a red lobster dinner by my folks when I graduated from college. I don’t remember high school but I assume it was mostly little bits of money from the various folk. Though I made the bad decision of quitting my moms church BEFORE all the graduation gift money

When I graduated college my dad gave me fifty dollars and told me not to die that night.

A year later my sister graduated from college and my parents threw a party for her. I asked my mom why I didn't get a party and she replied, "Oh, well, you can get a party when you get your masters degree."

That was TWELVE YEARS ago and come this December, I'm cashing that check.

My friends mom and grandma made our group homemade blankets. Real basic things that were just two pieces of cloth laid over each other and tied together but they were in our highschool covers and were super soft (still are) and I treasure it to this day.

Probably a bit much for someone you don't know well though, cash seems like the way to go

I got nothing when I graduated college. Aside from my diploma and a hug from my wife.

    Honestly, fine.

It's actually a fascinating post history to screen for bot content, and the only link was actually in this most recent post.

Marty: The future, it's where you're going?
Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.
