Darling in the Franxx broke me as anime watcher because I was sure that this show was gonna be smarter than it was appearing to be, that there would be some satire, ANYTHING
But no, it was exactly as dumb as advertised and later it became even dumber, making me an utterly naive moron.
It had some cutting subtext about violently heteronormative societies and older generations foisting the problems they caused on young people, but whoops I guess all that was a fuckin accident
I've heard it suggested once that trigger wasn't really involved in the concept or writing of darling in the franxx, that it was more of an external script and project that was looking for an animation studio and they took the paycheck. I'm not sure if I believe that they had no hand in the tire fire, but mayyyybe.
beep beep beep beep it's time for the biannual?semiannual? second yearly Berserk update (there were three chapters this year but two of them dropped next to each other so)
I know it became kind of a joke that Puck was in chestnut mode 24/7 towards the end, but this has gone too far in the other direction under studio gaga. Squash him up again it's getting uncomfortable. Re-round that little freak immediately.
I think the last time I posted about this stuff, I talked about how exasperated I was with the increasingly obvious holes in the story, and I don't want to keep doing that, but Rakshas being like "how the fuck did i wind up inside some dude a continent away from where i died" is just. They gotta figure something else out man this is half a step away from the Emperor's New Groove bit
anyways there's a light novel title joke in here somewhere
Reincarnated Inside the Body of a Fantasy Prince, But Like, Not As Him, Literally Inside Him, Anyways, Time to Use His Ribcage as a Fucking Grenade
The funny part of DitF to me is how much of it is just recycled from the objectively better Diebuster (which is part of the FLCL-Panty/Stocking continuum of proto-Trigger anime from Gainax, much like Gurren Lagann)

berserk new chapter
I get the sense we're going to get an explanation for how rakshas ended up here, not like it's going "well whatever he's here now we will never address this"

I think you're right - I guess I'm having a hard time with
why this confrontation is set up so Rakshas doesn't know what's happening. It's hard to think of a way to make that satisfying narratively, off the top of my head? He's just... in the right place for a fight now.
I guess maybe this is to show the level of control griffith has over his apostles by this point?
I think I just insta-skip on anything with being "backstabbed by the party" or a cheat skill mentioned in the title.
It took someone here telling me the actual premise of My Instant Death Ability is So Overpowered to get me to take a look at that since it is both mocking most of the others with titles like that and actually has an interesting twist on the premise.
He didn't get the power from being isekai'd. His entire class got isekai'd and got powers, but he slept through that part and didn't get one. However, it turns out that he already had a power, even back on Earth...because he's the entire concept of the end of all things in the form of a human teenager. Several of his classmates turn out to be undercover agents from various government agencies on Earth that were terrified of him and wanted to keep tabs on him.
At one point the goddess that isekai'd the class isekai's a scientist from Earth to ask what the hell is up with this kid, and the scientist just goes "Oh, you're the reason he disappeared from Earth? Thank you so much for getting him the hell off our planet!"
It also helps that the MC isn't an edgelord or anything, he's actually just a lazy teenager that would rather play his Switch than deal with all this fantasy world crap, and will generally take the shortest route through whatever his current predicament is (usually the shortest route is making whatever is in his way drop dead). He's also working towards returning towards Earth instead of just accepting his new life in fantasy land.
This was actually my favorite episode in the series so far. It managed to keep nearly all of my favorite jokes from the original version while speeding up the pace. Very impressive, and probably the best combination of comedy and martial arts to date.
Apparently this first season will be 12 episodes. I'm not sure how the last five episodes will be split into upcoming story arcs, since they have kept most at two episodes each so far.
You know what? Nanowrimo's cancelled on account of the world is stupid.
Yeah, I am really disappointed that Undead Unluck is getting speedrun ending after all. I do not understand why manga industry makes a decision it is making, we are at final arc already, why not allow the author to write the ending as much as needed?

Jump has been super bad with this lately and it's like they're doubling down on their archaic bullshit
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.
New series in jump today, but also feel like Kiyoshi is barreling straight into an ending which is a bit sad.
New series is from the BokuBen author, so probably another romcom.
I already hate the main character
It's very, um, unsubtle, I guess? The main character has _so many_ issues, and the secondary characters "surprising reveals" were not surprising; the "here are the clues I found to solve things" are fine but also mostly make me think of some books my kids read when they were younger with "can you solve the mystery before our hero does" with just how many 'things to spot' there were, when in practise it was obvious who the culprit was because the size of the cast basically means it had to be that person, just by elimination.
(did anyone else read Ron Kamonohashi, Deranged Detective? (via mangaplus) I started reading it a while ago, but it got (for what I was looking for) too much into the big-picture drama after a while so I tuned out )
Other things this week:
Blue Box
okay, that last page got me -- I definitely prefer it when it's about people being supportive of each other, and while "her dad shows up..." was never going to be followed by "...and everything's totally chill", this particular way of (hopefully?) resolving the issues makes a lot of sense but was also a neat surprise.
Witch Watch
continues to have the most varied types of story of anything; I can never tell if the "okay, this time it's some serious shonen stuff" is actually serious or if I'm missing a bunch of references/in-jokes, but either way I'm curious to see where it goes
Hima-Ten
ugh, why am I still reading this? It keeps on being all, like, "no, _this time_ he'll get together with his childhood friend, I promise", and the other characters are trying to make that happen, and there's lots of positive signs, but I will still be super amazed if that's what actually happens.
Ranma has 5 episodes left to go this season. I was looking over the manga and the first 22 chapters. This is my guess where we end up:
The Ice Skating competition covers 8 chapters in the manga. Shampoo covers 4 chapters, although she returns right after, but it's a good stopping point. So yeah, 5 episodes will cover those two arcs. Gonna be awesome, especially Skating arc! People who haven't seen the show are gonna be blown away at the goofy ass drama.

I think
the skating arc is when Ranma really steps up and shows he cares about her.
I started Realist Hero this evening and am getting pretty into it. It's also got a pretty low amount of "fanservice", which is nice (it took until episode 3 for a completely gratuitous close-up of a heaving bosom).
That said, I'm surprised that the existing powers that be haven't started reacting to the benevolent isekai'd tyrant suddenly and single-handedly upending the status quo.

The more political stuff should kick up in an episode or two

That show started out okay but man it got dumb at the end.
Darling in the Franx is way too scared of gay people to be Aquarion.

Any actual messaging was probably an accident.

Studio 4C put out the 1997 Koji Morimoto/Masaaki Yuasa joint Noiseman Sound Insect for free in HD for what I'm pretty sure is the first time ever
Iruma-kun getting a fourth season. That is pretty excellent news.
AniList

It's a good thing they got all that added musical number practice in, lord knows they're going to need it.
