I'm not sure 'dark comedy' is really what it's going for.

Yeah that scene definitely had me reaching for the x button but it drops it fairly quick

the squabbling stuff is one sided because MC so far has zero interest in either of them. The show knows this. in any case I think it’s just the elf that summoned him who has a crush on him, the cat seems like she’s just there because he inadvertently saved her.

It feels like it’s taking standard Isekai tropes and blowing them up with a main who never asked to be there in the first place and has zero interest in engaging with it.

I haven't seen this show, but I don't think the protagonist having no interest in their advances makes harem tropes any less cringey. It's just a slightly different flavor of wish fulfillment, allowing the same vapid scenario to play out again and again with the added benefit of never having to write romance. The line between critiquing the trope and taking part in the trope is vanishingly small, maybe nonexistent.

Tower of God had lots of characters I barely remember at this point.

Good time to abandon them all and introduce loads of new ones!

I'm still very interested to see where this goes.

I feel like the correct way to do it would be have the protagnist actually take a stand, and do a "no. I don't know either of you that well, and i have less than zero interest in romance. So cut this shit right now". or similar.

There was that Cautious Hero isekai whose protag rebuffed the girls pretty resolutely but that was mostly played for laughs. Are there legit romance anime where the dude actually sets all the tsunderes and kuuderes and all the other eres down and establishes boundaries?

I've never seen one that didn't just sit there with a sweat drop emoji going aww shucks while girls burned his life down around him.

not a lot of isekais with harem elements that aren't cringy. i think re:zero may be trying to do/say something about isekai harem stuff but i haven't seen it in awhile and fell off of it due to all the misery

others just don't have those elements at all due to various reasons - i'm a spider, ascendance of a bookworm, campfire cooking, reborn as a vending machine

The MC in The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses isn't interested in any of them, calls their bluffs on offering to do anything lewd with him, and does his best to kick them out of the house he's inherited. Unfortunately he does not do so and pave the place over as he planned, and the show continues after that. It's very, very bad.

finally got around to watching the boy and the heron. Unfortunately, knowledge of the Miyazaki family dynamics completely poisoned my ability to actually read this one. I was sitting there at the end, rolling it around in my brain, going "wait did Goro write this one? Surely I would have heard about that." And no, absolutely not, you idiot. You fool.

beautiful and sad film with a lot of big silly birds in it 10/10

Funny story. I used to be friends with two guys. One of them (Joel) and me had seen this movie, the other (Trevor) had not. Joel challenges Trevor to a drinking game with this movie, the game being 'take a drink for every cross you see.' Trevor accepts. They didn't go through with it but as I understand it, the neighbors heard Trevor's laughter and exclamations of "you sonofabitch" through multiple walls.

Should’ve have gone with the novel version
The joke here is that in the novels, there are no crosses, because one of the things the Nobility made sure to do during their millenia of dominion over the earth was to erase nearly all traces of their weaknesses and wards from culture: no knowledge of crosses, no knowledge of garlic, etc.

Which is funny when D uses wards like that and people are just like “what on earth are you doing with that vegetable, what the fuck?

Girlfriend, Girlfriend is one where the protagonists are still impulsive teenagers who make mistakes all the time, but instead of constantly defensively hiding their feelings and sniping at each other, they share their feelings all the time at full volume and often support each other.

Or if you want the total comedy option, The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You just somehow makes it work, and the increasingly elaborate ways in which it does work are the joke.

The deer anime is certainly one of the craziest things I've seen since Cuticle Detective Inaba. It's cute, but sometimes needlessly violent?

I get the absurdist humor, but I think the gushing buckets of blood is a bit much...

Also, I definitely don't think the translation was done by AI, it was just a rush job with no second pass(and poor editing), but the translation is too accurate, otherwise.

Looks like it's gotten a second pass now, from what I've heard? The one on the YouTube upload (not available in the US etc.) was updated, at least.

The first Gundam compilation movie is back up on GundamInfo if anyone hasn't seen it.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8dw8dwN5sw

Personally I prefer the first 13 episodes to the compilation, but also that's two hours longer than the movie so y'know. It's still pretty good, and still the movie that helped save the franchise.

    The good news is

Season 2 should barely have any characters from season 1.

    For a while at least.

I am near current with the webcomic. You never get the feeling of understanding the setting.

Like, low key people live for hundreds of years in the setting but they never dive into that. It’s just an aspect of the reality.

It doesn't make much sense, to be honest.

I've read the webtoon through.....fuck, I'm probably a half year out of date right now, but still enough that I can probably give you the basics, such as they are.

    There's a tower. There's at least 135 floors.

Every floor is basically its own world with continent sized space. Every floor (I think?) has like an "outer" section where people live, and an "inner" section where people do what's necessary to make it to the next floor. People who climb and are from the outer tower are called regulars, people from outside the tower are weird and are called irregulars, because that's...not supposed to happen, and it's not really discussed what's actually outside the tower. If you reach the current plateau of the tower (135th floor), you're given the title of Ranker. Each floor has a Ruler and most of them have Guardians. There's 10 families that rule over the tower and one King who rules over them (the ten families are headed by the king's companions when they were first climbing the tower before they stopped for reasons). Only an irregular can kill the King for....reasons? Families can donate powerful women to be the King's daughters in exchange for more of his power, but they can't be in relationships, etc for....reasons?

Not getting into the shinsu or the swords or any of the beasts or that shit because frankly it's all made up as it goes along.

Only an Irregular can kill the king because the king has deals with all the Guardians that make it so people can't use shinsoo against him, since all Regulars need to make contacts with floor Guardians to use shinsoo and even then it's regulated.

Irregulars are special because they don't need permission from a floor Guardian to use shinsoo and there's no restrictions on what they can do with it. One Irregular actually killed a Guardian and took over an entire floor. Another somehow made it through the entire tower and right up to the king, eliminating everyone who tried to stop it, before it just decided it was done and left.

I think someone just mentioned the CGI in Nier. This week's looked pretty good, I thought.

Nier: Automata Ver1.1a episode 14 post

    General notes:
-We're starting the C/D routes in earnest after a slight diversion in the premiere.
-This is actually really neat in that it shows things implied but never depicted in the game in terms of the war front. Coordinated battles against more enemies than the game could ever render on screen at once, it's very cool.
-2B in the new ED specifically looks a bit like the new Holo EN Vtuber Ceci, to me. Anyone else see it?
    Superfan/franchise commentary:
-They blow up the factory level with a space laser, while taking a second to show the part of the level that most easily kills you in the entire game (the crushers). I'm curious what that means for Pascal's ending in Route C/D, though as it very much involves that setting (I guess just have it take place somewhere else).
-The Red Girls are on the rampage with the vector of the virus infection VERY clearly spelled out, as compared to the game which just has you getting jumped all of the sudden and then you can piece it all together later.
-The Puppet Theater is the Arena DLC, surprisingly with the Square-Enix joke bosses referenced!
-There's something I'll be thinking about as this plot continues, it's related to Yorha Boys. A shocking twist from the C/D route is "explained" in the prologue of that book which makes it actually much MORE confusing, imo. I'll wait for the show to reveal that twist before really diving into the topic, though.

The main notable thing about Bye Bye Earth is that the monster she fought was a deer.

And the CGI marching band Nazis from the promos didn't show up yet. Otherwise, just kind of a generic high fantasy opening episode with an emphasis on racism in a really weird way. Everybody here's racist against you, so you need to go far away and find the place with people like you. Isn't that... just letting racism win? It's by the same dude as Mardock Scramble, so it's 'old' anyway. And the LNs its based on are short.

Literally that is the answer. Lero Ro explains it at the culling, but it’s basically plot devicium built into the setting.
