"Don't cut your nose off to spite your face".
It's a wierd saying, so let's get a full description from ChatGPT
"Cut off your nose to spite your face" is an idiomatic expression that means to take a drastic action that is intended to harm someone else but ultimately causes more harm to oneself. It often refers to a self-destructive act motivated by anger, revenge, or stubbornness, where the person inflicting the harm on themselves does so to make a point or to hurt another, but the action ends up being more detrimental to them than to the intended target.
For example, if someone quits their job in a fit of anger because they had a minor disagreement with their boss, they might be "cutting off their nose to spite their face." The intent is to show the boss that they won't tolerate the disagreement, but the result is that they lose their source of income and potentially harm their career more than they harm their boss.
The phrase emphasizes the irrationality and counterproductive nature of such actions.
I've seen some significant sniping and griping and wringing of hands and accusations and overall unproductive behavior oozing out of the seams of the forums in recent weeks. And having been through a few revolutions in the past, I'm getting that deja vu feeling that there are sides being chosen and pitchforks being sharpened. And honestly, despite the revolutions I've seen this forum survive over the last 23-plus years, I do have real concern that the next one could be the last.
Of course, there are always some people who just want to see the world burn. I'm not trying to speak to those people. By themselves, they rarely have the power to do it. They need a coalition. They need backers. That's where you come in. When you see a spark, cover it. Don't fan the flames. And don't buy into the deceptive lure of righteous indignation.
If you care about these forums and would like them to be here for years to come, then I suggest that when you see the rabble rousers needling and trolling for a response, you perhaps express your disapproval of their behavior in the most basic, simple, and non-provoking way, but otherwise don't grant them an audience for their remarks. Forgive their insults, do not engage.
To those who've already staked out a claim to some injustice or behavior that you feel needs addressed, I'd ask that you please let it go, and move on. I will forgive and forget, and the forums at large will forgive and forget. Please go ahead and leave the past in the past, and focus the future on what brings joy without being at someone else's expense. No matter how justified your complaint, or how frustrated you feel, I would ask that you bury that complaint in the interest of not cutting off your nose to spite your face.

As with much of the moderation lately, this is extremely late to the party and doesn't address any of the concerns people have put forward.
Additionally hiding behind civility is just people in power not letting other people have opinions, because you’re asking for civility while low key threatening people to hide problems.
Like if this is a joke post or something it’s pretty well hidden.
Satans..... hints.....
Whippy no one is criticising you, (or if they did they suck), if you are too tired or busy to do this job then yeah, fair enough. The actual consistent message that I’ve seen though is that it’s unfair for just you to do it and we think there need to be more resources in order to support you and the regular folk.
There is a definite secondary issue of both other forum mod overstep, and them abusing their power to force people into other place re: here and therefore complaints tend to surface here, but again none of it I think is criticism of you.
Satans..... hints.....
“Civility” fucking sucks when it’s just a polite way of saying “fuck off and get back to your day,” because everyone still knows they’re being told to fuck off and get back to their day, no matter how sweetly or professionally those words are arranged, just like civility fucking sucks when, say, it is historically just a professional, semi-gaslighting way to tell people they’re actually stupid and suck and need to get Right Think going, but you become a rule breaker the moment you respond to that with an unveiled insult instead of the carefully crafted one that still weaves back and forth, around and through the rules without ever once breaking their letter.
Civility, in short, is so often utterly uncivil when push comes to shove.
Also Fuck ChatGPT.

At least I wrote my bad joke myself

Bigots and fascists do not deserve civility.
The golden edict, where the only permitted insult was "goose," was stupid.
"Don't be a dick." Requires a much more active, much more accessible, much more unified , better staffed moderation team.
There are like four active mods, an IT person trying to be a community manager when they can find spare time, and apparently, ramius is back, after being offline for two years.
Did the mod team get together and y'all drew straws and you're the one who drew the short one?
The use of chatgpt is ill-advised. The let the past be the past thing doesn't really work when this forum is plagued with bigots who game the infractions system for years.
What do you think happens there? Like, socially, what happens when you throw that chum in the water?
Because, in my thinking at least, what happens is a bunch of people start looking at other folks they got beef with and going “Yeah, fuck those guys, glad the authority figure in view is taking a stand against those assholes.”
And now you’ve effectively just poured gasoline on the fire that starts fanning the flames further in a more chaotic way.
Or is their wisdom from chat GPT thread going to be about touching grass?
I don't understand what the point of the current introspection thread is, or geebs' thread before that
Everyone's said what they had to say, we might get another SE mod at some point or we might not, we might get the increasing number of bugs fixed or we might not, no other changes are planned, and either some blow up is gonna get this place shut down or it's just gonna continue slowly hemorrhaging users the way it has been for years
What else is there to discuss
http://www.audioentropy.com/
At a certain point we're just creating opportunities for people to try and passive-aggressively suggest who they think should be banned and it's like look folks if you want my list I can make it but as far as the forum goes I feel like I made my points already. Do people really feel like they didn't express themselves yet, or are they just doing doomposting beneath the veneer of longposting
the "no true scotch man" fallacy.
This is basically where I’m at as well. Threads like this are fanning the flames. The idea of the thread is to basically not grant an audience to people who are causing “problemsl yet…thats exactly what this thread seems to be doing.
There isn’t going to be a solution that makes everyone happy. But if we keep dickering about it, it’s never going to go away.
If the mods want to end all of this discussion (which I would have to think they do) then stop making threads like this and just do something. Add a few mods, and let the argument and fighting cool down as it will over time.
Right now it just feels like every time the whole thing seems to be dying down to a glowing ember, someone comes along and adds more fuel.
Stop talking
Make a decision about what is going to happen
Shut up.
Deal with the consequences of the decision
Let the forums move on in whatever direction they’re going to.
Last week I started a patreon for it and it's already up to about a hundred bucks a month in subscriptions
So my general advice to everyone would be to stop re-re-re-re-re-litigating the true heart of the problems with the penny arcade dot com forums and instead use that time to write pornography
It's way more fun and you might be able to make a little money off of it

That’s your solution to everything.

I was originally just doing this for fun but then I saw a guy who could barely string two sentences together making like a thousand bucks a month and was like. Well fuck I'm just leaving cash on the table here huh
