I'm fairly hot and cold on Thousandaires right now. I like the concept in theory, but it also feels like the budget is a little *too* restricting for ridiculous shenanigans. I think it says something that the best ones (for me at least) have kinda been spending the 1k on props or actors rather than "experiences".

I imagine season two might up the budget and not bother with a "winner" altogether

Thousandaire is a show where I thought the gimmick was great, but the actual execution sucks. I didn't even make it through the first episode with Wysocki it was so annoying.

Ross continues to be the most talented person in the whole pantheon.

It might be worth it to finish the first episode. Wysocki's was really bad, but Vic's was cute. Lisa's might be my favorite use of this concept. That was the only time I think the series felt like it was living up to what it could be.

Season 2 Episode 6 of Make Some Noise, the karaoke episode with Wayne Brady features just absolutely shocking amounts of talent. Jesus Christ where do these people get this from.

I am having trouble comprehending a world where people like Ross Bryant exist. It's frankly unfair some people get that much talent.

Yeah they had a couple episodes with special guest stars. You could try to argue that they let the big names win as a way to thank them for being on the show. You would be completely wrong, but you could argue that while being wrong. Both times it was fucking amazing to watch even if it did remove the suspense of who would win.

I get what you actually mean with this and this comment isn't directed at you specifically, but it's always worth remembering that nobody is born with talent and people that display a lot of skill in something have worked very, very hard to get to that point, and it's always worth recognizing that effort and dedication.

I will say I think talent as a baseline is worth remembering but only in extremely specific situation. It gives an easier road. I am friends with someone who recently got sponsored for esports who can't play the game without a special controller. She just has no talent for that shit. She whips the shit out of a lot of talented people who did not put in the effort to be as skilled as she has though.

oh for sure some things come easier to folks than others, but nobody is naturally gifted to a professional level at anything, time and hard work always trump whatever natural talent someone might have

That's a good point for sure. Thank you for highlighting it.

I wonder how Ross got to that point of rhyming? It feels instinctual. The Beastie Boys song legitimately sounds like a track they would have snuck into Paul's Boutique or something.

Then his use of iambic pentameter in not only improvisation, but singing? Like, is there some mental switch he can flip to just start thinking in that pattern?

I believe Ross is a member of an improv group that does improv versions of Shakespeare, so he's obviously worked quite a bit at improv poetry. When you do something like that enough, the rhythm just comes naturally.

Never Stop Blowing Up has been wonderful so far, I really like the variety of both the video-store employees and the action-movie characters. I also think using an exploding-die system is genius. It's fun and ridiculous and it's an easy way to encourage everyone to embrace their roles.

I do like that change to the system. In Mentopolis because die were also stats it led to some situations where characters had to explode multiple times no matter what. Here once you have exploded you get better odds next time and theres a tangible reward for multiple explosions

If there’s anyone who can monologue on par with Brennan, it’s Ross Bryant. The Confederate soldier’s letter trying to start a sexting thing and Just a Complicated Country Lawyer lives rent free in my head.

The latest adventuring party with Sam and Brennan was absolutely great. A neat peak at how Brennan knows why he's there, and what he provides and willingly goes with it, but also highlights how it is at a base level authentic and just ratcheted up a few notches...

And then Sam manages to torture him on his own show.

just in case the show where Brennan and other TTRPG GMs talk shop isn't people's usual speed and they missed Ross & Brennan debating the merits of maps & miniatures vs. "theater of the mind", it's a work of goddamn art

Honestly this is why Play It By Ear didn't work for me. It removed both the pure spontaneity of Off-Book*, and also the sort of manic glee that was watching Sam react to everything unfolding.

    * Sidenote, if you liked "Original Cast Recording" you should check out Off-Book: The Improvised Musical Podcast, hosted by 2/3 of the cast of that episode; its basically "Original Cast Recording" every episode except even wilder because there's no one giving them prompts, and just them winging a musical out of whole cloth based on whatever bullshit they happen to be talking about that day. It rules.

In general I think it’s okay and in fact better service to the platform if a premise of a show is allowed to die if it’s been suitably extracted.

Thousandaires or Smartpants are both a fun premise that just might not lend itself to being a persistent project, and that’s okay. Dropout is a group of endlessly creative individuals who don’t need to tie themselves to a thirteen season project the way a television actor would want a long-running syndicated project. It’s fine to just do something until it’s reached a logical end point

There was a trend of doing that for college parties for a bit and it always seemed like a blast, so getting to see it on Dropout is extra fun with professional funny folks.

My girlfriend and her friends call it Slides Night, they've been doing it off and on for a few years. It's not inherently comedic, mostly it's a way for folks to go on for a few minutes about their special interests to a polite audience. It's a fun time

One of my favorite Smartypants is the WNBA pitch. Just someone chatting excitedly about how fun a thing they love.

Also I've been watching A Court of Fey and Flowers and I love it! It's incredible to me that it's mostly still D&D rules, because it feels so different.

Edit: Also I'm trying to learn some GMing stuff from Aabria. She does a great job of helping people set up a lot of cool stuff and only knocking over like 20% of it but without feeling like anyone's been forgotten.

You should listen to Brennan’s short prequel run on critical role in the lead up to S3. Think it’s called Cataclysm or some such. Its amazing what him and his players achieve in like 5 episodes.
