Giving out cards that aren't Standard-legal for Standard events seems a little odd. But I guess they've been doing it for a while.

The Standard Showdown full art basic lands showing omenpaths look nice.

I suppose they're trying to lure Modern players to play Standard or something, but... eh. I can't bring myself to care about Standard, certainly not in paper. Let the local stores do draft/sealed again for champs.

Argh, first bug in a while, randomly kicked back to the draft lobby and got given a game loss during mulligan decisions in MKM draft. It had a 1-2-3-4 curve with 3 lands in aggro, too, so it's doubly sad.

The racoon commander and the squirrel commander both seem really fun. I like the idea of the offspring commander but I'm not as sure about it.

the offspring commander is basically gonna be "what creatures are you going to make some pervert combos out of by getting a second copy for 2 mana"

it's probably going to wind up being just like, an ETB triggers deck

Okay, I think I solved this Chimil format. 8x Lava Axe, 52 Mountains. Basically a four turn clock unless they gain life.

While racing light mechs, your Urbanmech comes in second place, but only because it ran out of ammo.

Nobody really runs interaction in the format, so the "meta" is basically charbelcher T2 kill, Leyline of sanctity + "fair" 6 drops to beat that stuff, and Laelia/Wiretapping for wins that go through leyline but don't win against the other combo if they lose the coinflip.

It's also the blink colours so that seems likely

And we'll see some good frog ETBs since they bounce (lololol)

I was talking about my brother and his friends who all have entire walls dedicated to their 20-50 made decks plus thousands of singles. Which just seems excessive to me but I also don't really like deckbuilding lol.

Meanwhile, I am here brewing four new Frog commander decks, and the commander for one of them hasn’t even been spoiled yet (Helga’s got to have a card it the set).

    I have a problem 🐸

Sunspine Lynx seems like it might hit certain decks really hard.

My standard desert deck only had two basic lands.

It's probably too expensive to be used in Modern, but I think that Lynx works against The One Ring as well. Adding "Damage Cannot Be Prevented" to random Red cards seems like something that makes sense as well anyway.

It's Leyline of Punishment except with a big body and a spicy ETB attached.

Making damage unpreventable is a pretty common thing in red, and yes - this absolutely can kill someone through The One Ring since the ETB doesn't target and "damage can't be prevented" turns off that part of protection.

On a similar note of cool new red cards, Heartfire Hero seems like it might be standard-playable. It's begging to be run in mono-red aggro, even if it does lack haste... (Saw pointed out that you can use Burn Together on it for massive damage... dealing double its power directly to your opponent could easily be lethal, but it's easily disrupted. Voldaren Thrillseeker seems pretty silly with it too - backup, swing with a 4/4 minimum, then sacrifice it for 8 to the face)

I can't cause I can't attack! The particular reason I hate it atm is because I just played a game where I got someone down to 2 hp and they started just recalling and playing the ring while using it for an extra card draw every turn so I couldn't do shit while they waited for board clear to draw, and I never drew any of the ways I had to get around it after 10 or 12 turns.

Well chuck it into mount doom then

i suppose you could play Mount Doom, steal the One Ring, and then sacrifice it using Mount Doom's ability

honestly if someone did that to me I would instantly concede, even if I were winning

There are cards that remove protection or make it so that damage cannot be prevented.

Yes I know. I had ways around it like I said in ze post I just didn't draw any in the 12 turns it took to lose.

For example, a month from now you could play a 2RR creature that said damage can't be prevented and hit opponents for each nonbasic land they control!

Unfortunately that card isn't out yet, but you could also play Stomp.

You are also playing Alchemy, which is going to have the worst balance by default due to card pool size
It’s got a similar design problem that legacy does. You have so many cards that of course the ones that are universally good will rise to the top.

Plus it’s arena, so you don’t need a thousand bucks to make a legacy deck, you need a couple of wildcards and suddenly you have a top tier deck

Ah, you seem to be right. I am conflating historic with alchemy. But the one ring is also not legal in alchemy, so I can only assume it’s in the brawl format?

Edit oh this is part of why I hate alchemy. I look up the one ring it says banned in alchemy. But it’s not, there just and alchemy version of it

The alchemy version has the piddliest little change too. Barely even worth the confusion.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

My favorite "why bother" alchemy change was changing Circuit Mender from 2 life to 3 life

My favorite change was on Earthquake Dragon, where for some reason the possibility of dumping multiple Earthquake Dragons out at once (after already having 5 mana up and a 1-2-3-4 curve of undisrupted Dragons) meant they errata'd it in advance to not count cards named Earthquake Dragon.

On the reverse of this discussion, though, Lorcana just made the completely insane decision to errata Bucky the Squirrel, despite it being a physical card they can't print with the fixed text. The card was a protected 2-drop that allowed an aggressive deck to force opponents to discard multiple cards by casting certain creature types (basically), and they errata'd it to make it cost 3, remove the protection, and only force discard if you cast cards for their equivalent of an emerge cost. The card now has fewer accurate parts of its rules text than inaccurate parts, which is a completely wild thing to do to avoid banning a card. This is "we didn't think you'd +1 your own stuff with Oko" level decisionmaking.

My favorite Alchemy change is when they altered like 40 commons and uncommons in an attempt to fix SNC draft as a whole. Like... just take the L on this one.

I genuinely think Bridge from Below instead of Gaak was a less stupid ban decision than the Bucky Errata.

Even better, in the announcement they promise to reprint Bucky with the new, corrected text later! They're gonna keep the card legal so two versions with wildly different text can coexist in the same environment and only one will be correct!
