my lord…we wouldn’t want the populace to think you weak. perhaps it’s best we, that is to say you, your grace, should open the high book of magic as a show of strength and confidence

yes i know it is forbidden my lord, but we must think of what the alternative is

    While he was schemin'
I was beamin' in the Beamer, just beamin'
Can't believe that I caught my man cheatin'
So I found another way to make him pay for it all
    So I went
    To Neiman-Marcus on a shopping spree-ah
And on the way I grabbed Sole and Mia
And as the cash box rang, I thought everything away

My lord, I know you are concerned about the health of the young heir. There is a hot springs nearby said to cure all manner of ailments and grant long life and increased vigor to those who partake. 'Tis naught but a small sojourn of several days from here, surely convalescing in the springs would do him much good?

Oh, but we wouldn't want the people to notice such a caravan and begin speculating about the security of Your Majesty's future, would we? You know how the common folk love to engage in rumormongering.

No, for the sake of preserving the peace and avoiding unfounded worry, we should forgo the customary retinue and honor guard.

Tis a shame that Sir William was overcome with such madness. To accuse me, your most loyal servant, of treachery. Worse, to doubt your leadership while we are on the brink of war. Please, allow me to... convince him of the error of his ways. I will go alone - we don't know who else on the guard has fallen to his poisoned words.

Your lord I apologize but the head cook tripped and fell upon his own knife ten times while attempting to make his nightly aspic with chicken hearts and water chestnuts

No my lord, I didn’t think it was possible either.

Of course my lord, the loss of your most favorite meal is a tragedy.

My lord, forgive my boldness but might I suggest take-out? I have here a small list *list unfurls to the floor* of suitable choices

The trick is to be the one teaching the game.

Give everyone legitimately good advice, because you want them to learn how to play the game and enjoy the game.

But also whoops it turns out you were the secret traitor and no one suspected you because you were so helpful.

I can scheme really well as long as I'm convinced I'm the only one doing it. If I know everyone is being deceptive I collapse into a paranoia singularity and just blurt out my whole deal to anyone who asks.

actually that might only be true at table games (I suck at things like Werewolf). One of my friends did a cosmic-horrors themed murder mystery costume game for his bachelors party and I had a great time with that. I think I just need to construct a character who is scheming, rather than doing it myself.

my liege i’m afraid i bring ill tidings. it seems your son, the prince, has been seen on more than one occasion sneaking out under cover of night to meet with the princess of the western kingdom.

yes my lord i am most sure, my sources hath witnessed these meetings with their own eyes. a union between these two could be disastrous for the kingdom. i am certain they would see you dethroned.

it brings me no joy to suggest such, but perhaps you should consider confining the prince to his chambers. yes. yes, he will be most disagreeable to the arrangement but you are the king and foremost his father. in time your grace…he will see you were right to do so.

    yes

very well, i shall inform the guards 😏

I think my favorite board game scheming moment came during a 4 player game of the Civilization board game 3 of us game night regulars and a new guy. Pretty early on we'd settled into two alliances, more or less equally matched with the new guy and I allied. Right near the end I made a risky play for victory that left my capital city weakly defended but only my ally could reach it and we'd been staunch allies all game. He went ahead and betrayed me to win the game by conquering my capital city, but after a moment he frowned at my non-reaction and said, "Wait, did you deliberately leave that opening to see whether I would go for it?"

To which I just smiled and said, "And now I know how far I can trust you in any future games we play together."

My Lord, Boardwalk and Park Place are merely two properties out of many, sequestered away in the farthest corner of the land. The improbability of someone landing there renders them effectively worthless! These utilities however, none can live without them!
