Yes, it would be unwise, because the drive would be sitting at a weird angle.

Well the gamecube could reportedly be moved around while playing and the disk wouldnt move at all. So my guess is that similar technology is in the wii and it can be played while being moved around too.

So my guess from no experience whatsoever is that it would work because Nintendo is freaking awsome. I must demand that you post pics of this weird ass shelving unit though.

The Gamecube isn't a slot-loading device, and the discs are smaller diameter as well. I wouldn't try it.

But the Wii accomadates gamecube disks even if you put them in way off center.

I dont think the angle of spin makes any difference. IT usually is changing the angle while the disc is in the drive which causes problems. Circular motion and all the jazz means there shouldnt be problems.

True, but the 'cube had a centerpiece that "locked" the disc in place, therefore the disc didn't move. Systems that don't have that "locking" piece (possibly Xbox 360) have been know to scratch their discs when moved or tilted. Now I don't know for sure if the Wii is lacking that piece since I haven't dissected one, but since I haven't heard any kind of locking sound when the disc is loaded I would guess no.

Bingo. It'll be fine. The only problem comes when you MOVE the Wii when the disk is spinning. That causes problems because of centrifugal force and all that. But pretty much any position statically? No problem.

If I remember correctly the Wii was designed to run in Zero Gravity.

It should be perfectly fine as long as it doesn't move. When I saw the thread title, I imagined it slanted against a stack of DVD cases to fit on a shelf that isn't quite tall enough. That would be bad. A solid shelf built to be at 45 degrees should be perfectly fine.

I'd say avoid it, because vertical or horizontal, you have at least on e intake completely clear. This way, unless you block the gamecube ports, you'd be placing both air intakes up against some sort of surface. If it's hard wood it should be fine, but I wouldn't want to risk it.

I really can't see a problem with it. The Wii is built well enough. Hell, I've had my Wii knocked over in the middle of playing a game and nothing bad happened to it.

I really want to see this shelving unit. I'm sitting here trying to picture it, but I just can't comprehend a reason why you'd want to build a diagonal shelving unit. Unless it's purely for aesthetic value instead of practical value. Not that I'm saying you shouldn't do it, I'm just really curious about what it will look like and how it will work.

I've seen diagonal shelving for books, cds, and DVDs, built as such for aesthetic purposes. But I'd never want to put something electronic on it.

As others have said, I can think of no reason anything bad COULD happen, as long as the angle doesn't change while the disk is spinning. If you really need me to, I'll do it and post pictures.

y'know ... for all the wondering we're doing ... you should just go ahead and try it out.

If it doesn't work, what's the worst case scenario? You have to wait a few weeks while Nintendo gives you a new one for free?

Seriously, with how eager they are to issue replacements, I'm surprised we all treat them with such kid-gloves.

My Wii was pulled off a shelf while running in a vertical position and landed on its side. Not only did the game not get scratched, it kept running the game without any problems whatsoever.

I don't think anything bad's going to happen if you have it at an angle, but if something does happen using is improperly like that would be enough to kill your guarantee at getting a free repair or replacement (not that you necessarily wouldn't get one, but I don't think anyone would guarantee you that you would). So I wouldn't recommend it.

Couldn't you put the wii horizontally in one of the squares with a triangle gap underneat it. (Using some L brackets) and then underneath it in the gap you could keep your controllers and stuff?

Considering diagonally is pretty much the ONLY way to get my old PS1 running, I see no problem in storing the Wii as such.

(also, Bruin, shouldn't that be "wiine")

Gamecubes ARE blackboxes (unless you're silly and bought a purple blackbox). A friend dropped his down two meters hard enough that something inside got knocked loose and is still rattling in there. It still worked perfectly when he bought his Wii.
