suggestion for a child activity: go out to a major railroad that gets a lot of traffic and watch a big freight train go by together, that was always a fun time for tiny me
i still need to solve a murder mystery with @zonugal on one
Sodor: Its History, People and Railways is a book written by the Reverend Awdry with a lot of backstory about the Island of Sodor (Denonym of Sodor: Sudric), including a high level history going back to Roman times. Crovan's Gate, the main line station that meets up with the Skarloey narrow gauge railway (a reference and homage to the real life Tallylyn railway in Tywyn, Wales) is a reference to a Sudric King, Crovan, and a great battle he won against the Normans during the Harrowing of the North, leaving Sodor nominally independent until 1404.
It also has an extensive backstory for all the railway companies which formed, failed and fused into the current Northwestern Railway (NWR), including the convoluted story of Henry the Green Engine being built from stolen prototype plans for the A3 LNER trains like Gordon, before beimg rebuilt into a Stanier 5MT somehow after crashing the Flying Kipper. This was all inspired after the early artists for the Thomas books kept not drawing Henry the way Awdry wanted.
We only want one thing and that's to find ourselves drawn into a classic murder mystery in a restricted environment.
It's in our bones. It's a primal desire. An ancient hunger.

The best bit is you can tell what direction the next train is coming from from the signals.

The cars were taken out of service in early 2020 because most of the fleet couldn't pass mechanical inspections. Between the trolley repairs, road repairs along the route, needing to train new operators, updating the electrical lines, SEPTA budget issues, and of course covid, the expected 18 month process of getting them back on the tracks ended up taking four years.
