Early this year I got obsessed with putting on those “ride the train” YouTube videos while I worked. I found it very relaxing.

    your son has good taste
suggestion for a child activity: go out to a major railroad that gets a lot of traffic and watch a big freight train go by together, that was always a fun time for tiny me

If there was a society that lived on a train, it would be a cool and chill society without any classism because train people aint got time for none of that, gotta keep the train going choo-choo.

Thomas the Tank Engine has a Silmarillion

Sodor: Its History, People and Railways is a book written by the Reverend Awdry with a lot of backstory about the Island of Sodor (Denonym of Sodor: Sudric), including a high level history going back to Roman times. Crovan's Gate, the main line station that meets up with the Skarloey narrow gauge railway (a reference and homage to the real life Tallylyn railway in Tywyn, Wales) is a reference to a Sudric King, Crovan, and a great battle he won against the Normans during the Harrowing of the North, leaving Sodor nominally independent until 1404.

It also has an extensive backstory for all the railway companies which formed, failed and fused into the current Northwestern Railway (NWR), including the convoluted story of Henry the Green Engine being built from stolen prototype plans for the A3 LNER trains like Gordon, before beimg rebuilt into a Stanier 5MT somehow after crashing the Flying Kipper. This was all inspired after the early artists for the Thomas books kept not drawing Henry the way Awdry wanted.

We only want one thing and that's to find ourselves drawn into a classic murder mystery in a restricted environment.

It's in our bones. It's a primal desire. An ancient hunger.

Shining Time Station was awesome. Somehow some kid show had both Ringo Starr and George Carlin on it.

There a few places here in London where the "underground" tube goes overground. One of these places has a bridge where I would take my nieces to watch the tube go by. They love waving at the trains and the drivers sound their horns as well.

The best bit is you can tell what direction the next train is coming from from the signals.

The historic PCC trolley cars that run along Girard Ave in Philadelphia returned a couple weeks ago! They are so beautiful.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKL0XrEanpc

The cars were taken out of service in early 2020 because most of the fleet couldn't pass mechanical inspections. Between the trolley repairs, road repairs along the route, needing to train new operators, updating the electrical lines, SEPTA budget issues, and of course covid, the expected 18 month process of getting them back on the tracks ended up taking four years.

When I was very young I had very bad asthma and sometimes I needed to use a nebulizer to help me breathe overnight. The issue is that a nebulizer is (or was at the time I dunno how much nebulizer technology has advanced in the last 30 years) a large, rather loud machine. The only way I could actually fall asleep was by having my special bedtime video playing, which was literally an hour long vhs of a family friend recording his model train set with a camcorder.

My friend is working on a roguelike game you can play if you want to. (It has free demo)

I almost bought a flat near the local train station (high enough up to be quiet, but still with a view of the tracks)

The sellers went with someone else, so now I'm by the canal: the train line of the 18th century

The line that goes from Taipei to the largest international airport on the island often dresses the trains up with themes. Few months ago it was Pokémon, now I think it’s advertising for on of the baseball teams. Sometimes it’s “a cute mascot cat introduces sports names in English and Chinese”, which I really enjoy.

We took Mini T to one of the nice parks in the city and rode the mini-train that goes around the whole thing. He got upset when the conductor had everyone yell "All aboard!" but he enjoyed the rest of the ride.

When visiting my sister who was teaching english in Ehime prefecture we had to take the train to the rural-ish town. It was on an older looking train that had folks at major stops taking photos of it as we passed. On one of the days of my visit they even had a sorta themed car with a display case full of model trains onboard.
