Looking to track a dog in house

We just got a 4-month old puppy and we are living the potty training life while he gets used to his new house and I had an idea. The breeder we got him from "potty trains" with a dog door which is not feasible in my neighborhood so I wondered if I could put together some sort of gadget to alert us when he walks up to do a door. We have done a good job puppy proofing the house and want to encourage him to wander a little bit, but a few times he's gone from very quietly wandering to the kitchen, to waiting at the door briefly without making a sound, to giving up and pooping/peeing on the doormat inside. I figured something like this must exist, but I can't seem to find one so maybe I DIY it? I'm thinking maybe an RFID on his collar (which are super easy to get) but I need a sensor with longer range than tap distance. I would love to mount something in the middle of the door at his height that would ping us that he's waiting at the door to get him out to do his business.

Also, because I am not a monster that would do such a thing as talk about a new puppy without posting pics here:
