Finding a place to get one's hair done.

So, I've come to the conclusion I need to get something done about my hair, and the supercuts down the road has only made it worse the past 3 times. Drastic times call for finding someone who's IQ is above room temperature to cut my hair.

My problem: Who the crap do I go to?

I really dont think the old school 80 year old barber that my grandfather went to, the one with a striped pole outside his shop, is going to be able to give me the modern look i desire.

And Im questioning how many shops with the world 'salon' in their name cater to young males.

So, how the heck is a guy supposed to find a place to get his hair cut/styled/whatever manly word there is for this crap because man, i am confused as heck, this shouldnt be this complicated.

alt- if by a slim chance anyone here actually lives in Newport News, VA, and knows a place, that'd be awesome.

But so would be winning the lottery

There exist "men's hair salons" that are effectively high-end barbershops for men. Any major salon, (for example, Vidal Sassoon) will also do men's hair, with a focus on style. Expect to pay between $35 and $300 for such a haircut. However, at the really high-end salons, you can often have your hair cut by a trainee on a "school day" for a cut-rate...$20-40. This is often quite a bit better than you'd get at any men's salon. These are the kind of places where you can walk in and just ask them to "surprise you" and they will come up with a new style that works.

Remember that part of hair maintenance is using product appropriate for the style. A salon will likely try to sell you some of their own stuff (at a premium) but find out what kind of product they're trying to sell you (e.g., molding creme, pomade) and then get an equivalent at the store for less if you want to save a buck.

go to any women salon, find one that deals with mostly young folks, discuss your look or take a picture. trust me i get my hair cut every 8 weeks and I have a lovely looking girl wash and cut my hair (the wash is just pure niceness) and as bonus she does what i want. it just costs but its not that much more like 10-15 bucks, and i don't have a shit haircut!

Find someone who has a cool hairstyle that you like and ask them who cuts it.

If they say they themselves cut it, try try again.

I found my awesome hairdresser via word of mouth and I've used him for 2 years now. You should be prepared to hate your haircut, too, so you can just let the hair dresser do whatever they think is going to make you look good. If you don't like it, you don't go back.

Just go to any busy salon in the hip part of your city. The haircut generally cost about only 10 more dollars than a regular barbershop does these days which is why I made the switch myself. Because like someone said earlier its nice having an attractive person who doesn't smell of Barbersol massaging your head under sprayjets.

I'm not entirely sure. Since I was 12, my motto has been, "Oh, I had to brush it today, time to shave most of it off" and that noise doesnt fly anymore. I was told be a friend of the female variety to try the messy/tussled/I just woke up look, which Im more than willing to give a shot.

Same boat here although it's a little more expensive and always leave a nice tip. She knows exactly what I want when I come so there's no dealing with explaining how you want your hair cut to a new person every month. There's no longer any stigma attached to a male visiting a hair salon anymore. Just man up and check out a few places locally. Find one that charges a decent price and start there. If you don't like the way your hair comes out? Try another place. If it comes out how you want it? Tip well and come back every month.

Word of mouth is usually the best way to go- friend who has awesome haircut or even stranger.

If you can't get any recommendations from friends, try Yelp - they do online local reviews and I've found them pretty helpful for hair places and restaurants. For the hair places, skim the reviews for guys that are doing the reviewing. Then look for the particular name of the stylist in the review (if the reviewer listed one.)
