ProTip: go to WWII reunions. Everyone there is like 90+, so you can just take their medals and shit and they can't do a thing about it.

My grandpa turned 90 last week but he only served at a base in Germany after the war so I don't think he has any good loot to pass down.

Also 90 years ago was 1934 so those kids would only be 12 when the war ended. The youngest WWII vets should be nearly 100 by now (except the famous Tween Squadron, the Fightin' Pre-Teens, and various child superhero sidekicks)
    Even better!

Also, WWII valor is the good shit. They killed Nazis and junk. You don't wanna steal the valor of same lame war like Desert Storm, right? You might get some sympathy points for 'Nam, but you can do better is what I'm saying.

everyone wants to steal the valor, nobody wants to run off with the ptsd

I was reading an article the other day about how 30,000-40,000 people fled the draft during the Vietnam War up to Canada, but it worked out okay because the same number of Canadians came down and volunteered.

That is a lot more than I would have thought.

Don't really know why you'd want to rob a fabric store

I'd do it for my mom she's never not sowing or knitting, walmarts don't have fabric or aquarium sections any more so I would feel bad about robbing a fabric land but they can stand to lose some silk

I have a couple of friends who are into the big J but all of them have a complicated relationship with him that does not involve any churches

But the only place in my neighborhood that does anything at all to interface humanely with the unhoused community is a church, so who knows I guess

I'm pretty old at this point but it's still weird yeah.

Especially if they put "god-fearing" on dating profiles. I don't advertise that I'm afraid of heights, do I?

People who go to church should be like my dad and just go to church ad keep it to themselves, and then bring donuts home after Sunday mass for everybody else at home.

On a less antagonising note, I know folks that are into all kinds of religions and the organisations behind them can be helpful to the community. Each to their own, as the saying goes. Naturally the biggest problem with any organisation as large as religions is they’re going to attract people after the associated power and influence.

Christians in particular have the added problem where they’re less familiar with their own texts and beliefs beyond there being a good and bad god plus a terrestrial intermediary. When I was an insufferable 90’s atheist I couldn’t even get a good argument out of them because I could quote texts they’d never read.

Having taken part in numerous pagan festivals over the years (they’re more semi-historic reenactments in my opinion, since there isn’t enough sacrifice and more than enough interpretive dance) Christians could do with more queer people and getting naked around bonfires.

I met several people in Japan who are non-religious but also do every single possible religious festival going, including Christmas inexplicably, which is wild to me. But there really is a divide between believing in god/s and in a religion, and believing in the power of ceremony over there. It’s fascinating.

In conclusion, Hinduism has the best stories and would win in a fight handily.

I have a coworker who is 10-15 years younger than me who is a pretty big believer in the teachings of Christ, but she's actually really cool about it. She's a big supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, she doesn't bring it up in unrelated conversations, she's genuinely kind and nice, etc. She's pretty left leaning politically, but she does go hard into the, "chemicals are bad for you and the government is poisoning our food with them and also all celebrities and rich people are pedophiles, etc." stuff which I mostly associate with people who lean right, so I don't know.

Us people are walking complexities I guess

I grew up Episcopalian, which means my baseline for Christianity is generally healthier than the average USAmericano

It took me a long time to realize just how gnarly the situation with American Christianity in particular was outside my weird little bubble

I generally have a complicated relationship with religion these days, especially after realizing just how much antisemitism Christianity is built on, as the early Christians wanted to distance themselves from the Judeans as the Romans persecuted both parties -- for example, the story of Jesus flipping the tables of the money exchangers that Christian Socialists love to peddle is very much a deliberate misinterpreting of how the Second Temple worked, and also the Pharisees' entire deal has been warped by history (the actual religious authorities with the role depicted in the Bible were much more likely the Sadducees, and modern Rabbinical Jews are philosophically descendants of the Pharisees )
