So I've spent years being The Flexible Guy at my current job. Filling in for anybody and everybody with or without notice. 16-hour shifts, 80+ hour work weeks, sudden pivots to overnight schedules, working holidays, etc. Hell, I'm currently working a regular 55-hour weekly schedule because it's the only way to keep 24/7 coverage for us.
Somewhere along the way I talked to my boss about making it official and paying me an additional salary to compensate for the expectation that I would just...be on call all the time. He agreed, but the company was going through some hard times, so they offered me about 30% of market rate at the time. I agreed because I had good relationships with the leadership + had seen some behind-the-scenes stuff so I knew they weren't bullshitting, it really was the best they could do.
Flash forward a few years. Old boss is gone, we've been in a multi-year pay freeze because the hard times never ended, and we eventually got bought out by a competitor who brought everybody over at their current role + current compensation. I've continued to go above and beyond in terms of flexibility and reliability. We recently got a cost-of-living raise that didn't attempt to make up any ground for the years of pay freeze prior to the buyout.
Tonight I started to feel unwell. I decided to work tonight's shift because it was such short notice, but provide advance notice that I'd likely be out sick tomorrow. I still have about half my annual sick hours unspent here in the eleventh month, and Wednesdays are scheduled such that I wouldn't be leaving any gaps. Maybe LESS coverage, but no zero-coverage gaps. So should be fine, yeah?
New boss immediately tells me it's denied unless I can find somebody to work in my place, suspecting that my illness is election-related (as though that would make it any less legitimate). Kinda thought 9 years of grinding would get me a single sick day without some horseshit, but I guess we can do it their way. So now she's got an e-mail waiting to greet her in the morning, asking when (in the "very near future") we can schedule a discussion to bump me up to market rates, since I'm apparently on call even for my own sick leave with advance notice.
You can EITHER get the friends-and-family discount, OR you can treat me like trash. Not both.

Continuing my general dissatisfaction with admin, I anger applied at the closest, “best” (essentially in standardised testing) school and now I have an interview with them.
I haven’t had an interview in like eight or more years.

This is going to be very first world problems to some and I apologize.
We get 25 vacation days a year here in Denmark. I suddenly discovered, a couple of months back, that I had 30 vacation days left in my account for this year, even though I'd already taken 20 days off this year. I had another 5 planned but not entered in the system, and then I had 5 that I transferred from last year, that seemed like, "oh, they just didn't remove any of the vacation I already used from the accounts". But I kinda want to transfer another five days to next year, because I'm not going to use it before, I tend not to use holiday time over Christmas, so I'd appreciate knowing exactly what my vacation day account looks like, so I can plan it. Asked HR (...), asked again, asked a third time along with my supervisor asking, finally today I got an answer.
"It appears that you've accumulated five days a year over a number of years. You can transfer five of them to next year and we'll add the rest to your January paycheck."
Wait... hold on. For the last four years, I've had five vacation days less than I should each year? And no one noticed? When I had a nervous breakdown in the office because I didn't understand the new vacation day law and I was burnt out and couldn't comprehend apparently not having any time off for at least six months, no one thought to check? Just now someone noticed and just dumped them in my account without bothering to tell me?
Just sent a mail to my supervisor that was literally just "Wait, WTF?".

I decided to call off today with an unpaid absence and probably gonna call off tomorrow using sick time so I don't totally trash my paycheck. I'll only have 8.5 hours of pto left for the year but oh well.
Anyone have any advice on finding a job out of country? Currently finding out if I'm actually eligible for dual citizenship in the UK and wanted to see what steps I should take for work there.

By far the easiest method is transferring offices with the same employer. If you need sponsorship, then I hope you have an in demand job and there's generally specific job boards for that. If you don't need sponsorship, I'd probably go for pretending you live in the country and job search in a normal manner, obvious downside that you'll have to get yourself to an interview if it's in person, but I think a lot of companies will balk at someone not in country.
The UK just came off an insane line of PMs so I'm not sure the country is any better permanently, but ymmv.

Yesterday I covered for a Social Studies teacher at a local high school where the last two classes I co-taught a Civics class with another teacher.
The topic? Analyzing election results.
And, well, I was able to speak deeply about the challenges and reasons why Kamala Harris was defeated.
In the last class of the day a student raised their hand and asked their teacher, "Can this guy permanently take over for the other teacher? They know WAY more!"
Which... Thanks for the endorsement kid but ya gotta say that a bit softer.
But always good to get some reaffirmation to quell any imposter syndrome.

I just can not concentrate on anything today. Fortunately, only have a couple meetings to lead (that I can mostly do on autopilot). Yesterday I had enough to keep me busy and reality hadn't fully sunk in (I'm in US, b/t/w), but today I'm spiraling, and my mind is like a cheetah placed in an over-sized gerbil ball, just sprinting in every direction, banging against all the walls.
One of my sons has a half day today, and has been begging to play vidja games with me, so I may leave early and do that.

Yea, I've looked into stuff in the UK and it doesn't seem a whole lot better but things are ready to get significantly worse here and I also still live at home and have basically zero friends so maybe a new start some where else could be good.
I do wish I had marketable skills though. No degree, I worked for 2 years at a children's science museum working the register, 3 years doing marketing for the local comic con, and then almost 9 years working for various banks in call centers doing collections and servicing loans.

The state of the things plus some other personal stuff going on this week meant that I really just did not have it in me to in to work today. So I took one look out the window and saw it was still snowing this morning and decided "Nah, gonna WFH." One of my teammates who went in said it was a solid choice because the roads were a disaster and his normal 10 minute drive took just over an hour.
Now tomorrow is cancelled already.
Real 21 steps backward, 1 step forward energy this week but I'll take the wins I can actually achieve.
I got sent this in my university email. the Foreign Affairs IT Fellowship is a program by the Dept of State that will pay for two years of college for folks in Computer Science majors. The goal is that applicants will complete their programs of study and be placed in Foreign Service Diplomatic Technology Officer (basically Tech Support at an Embassy) roles for five years afterwards. Requirements include being a US citizen, enrolled or planning to enroll in a CS program, and maintain a 3.2 GPA
I got my offer for post grad. Librarian qualification.
Congratulations! What demographic are you working with?
General public at the moment as a Library Assistant at the local council library service (which is one of the largest councils in my city with no1 circulation in the state).
60% of our borrowers are over 60. Its a bit of a white bread and affluent area, but the branch I work at has a lot of tourists and overseas visitors wanting to print resumes, since its on the sea and in a tourist spot. There's also social housing up the road, and plenty of students. Lots of people work from home at the library as well. So I meet a lot of different people and often have to communicate with people whose English isn't the best, which I'm good at.
I'll still be working my usual part time here while studying full time, as the course is online with 6pm evening classes. I've done that before.

Oh yeah there's also a language school nearby as well so we are often fielding people staying here temporarily who need to sign up. I've gotten fairly good at explaining the process as simply and easily as possible for them, but sometimes I just have to open up google translate.

2. It's fully remote, and has committed to remaining that way
3. I have no college degree and am responsible for myself and my partner. We have a mortgage.

It almost makes me dislike Fridays, which should be a crime

This probably isn't true. They are probably just logging into the meeting early and since they are the first person there it starts the meeting. It doesn't mean they want anyone else to join. I've logged into meetings early and thus "started them" only because I know I'd forget to log in on time and who the hell cares if I'm sitting there early, other than you I guess.
edit: Friday meetings should be banned though especially long ones. That's just dumb.
