I know someone who didn't go the dentist for 15ish years and when he finally went they gave him a thorough cleaning and then a big thumbs up.
No wisdom teeth problems, no rot, no nothing.
The jerk.
I was not aware we knew each other.
(never had a cavity, wisdom teeth are all in with no issues, which is all good because I hate the dentist like a cat hates taking a bath)
Yeah I've never had any work done and still have all my wisdom teeth. I occasionally get a professional cleaning done. Not for a while though because finding NHS dentists here is impossible these days.
My apologies y'all, I am not as clear as I always think I am haha. Yeah they did a topical ans then a local. If you want any more, gas or iv or whatever, you need to be referred to an oral surgeon. And I haven't been given the options of post-extraction pain management since at least 2012. My spouse got pain meds when they cut out their wisdom teeth last year, but that was an oral surgeon, so ot definitely seems like dentists just don't do that here anymore.
love to send update emails that are basically contentless and can have no strong language of certainty because the real answer to someone's concern is that lawyers are lawyering

Yup i'm the same. My dentist actually explained it to me like, you know how some folks lack/have the gene that makes Cilantro taste like soap to you? It's basically the same thing here. Some folks like myself have a gene that causes you to produce saliva with incredibly low acid levels. Apparently high acid saliva is the main culprit to weakened enamel, and some folks just don't have that problem. Now if i only I could get the gene for high metabolism because freaking hell at this point in my life I'd much rather prefer that.
Welp, got the email, and I wasn't selected. However, they are hiring for temporary staff for the same position, and I already applied for that as a back up plan.
Still fucking sucks, though.
damn I'm really sorry bro
Thanks all!
It's not all bad news, though. While I wasn't selected for one of the two the "career" positions, they have 3 open "Term Limited Temporary (TLT)/Special Duty Assignment (SDA)" positions. They sent out an email (before I got the news about the career position) that those were now posted separately and open for application. So I did that immediately and heard back this morning that my application will be reviewed for consideration. So there's a little more hope for me to hang on to while I trudge around looking for something else in the meantime.
Went over timesheet/payroll stuff today and it turns out they don't have any kind of online time logging system. Instead, I have to open an Excel timesheet, fill it out, save it as a PDF, then e-mail it to my supervisor
our hardware inventory system is also a shared Google Sheets file
academia, man
Pre-pandemic, we had to fill out an excel sheet, print it out, get it physically signed by a supervisor, scan it, and email the scan to the timekeeper we were assigned to. If you wanted to know your time-off balances, you had to fill out a physical form, submit it to HR, and wait for your timekeeper to email you.
Things lined up so that we changed to an online system very early in the pandemic. They had started working on it beforehand, and timing just worked out well. We also have our time-off balances available to see online (but only up to the most recent "approved" timesheet)
Things still aren't automated well, and I think the timekeepers still have to go in and look at timesheets submitted, and manually go to the time-off database, make sure everything lines up and you have enough time. Then they manually change the time-off available in the online timesheet page. This is likely the best they will be able to get.
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing

Got to love the start of the school year where the wifi goes down all day.

Final circ computer’s wifi died during last block so I had to have students line up at my office door and check them out on my computer in there since it was hardwired.
Lotta kids liked the 8bitdo keypad I had them type their student numbers in with.
Alright, that was fast. Just got an email that I have been invited to go through the testing for the temp position.
How likely do you think it is that they post the career positions publicly because they have to but make it a practice to hire out of the temp pool?
So, they sent an email out to the applicants for the career position about the temp position because of new labor laws that went in to effect that required them to make the temp positions a separate posting. So it was a nice courtesy of them to make people aware, even before decisions on the career posting weren't yet final. I sent a follow up email asking if I could still apply for the temp position while I was still being considered for the career position and they told me that email didn't mean I had not been selected for the career position.
It's government stuff. It's weird.
EDIT: I think I answered your question? They technically did post the temp hiring positions, but did it lumped in with the career posting, if that makes sense?
Oh no it's going to be 16 more days until I can look at a spreadsheet again
I can send you some if you're feeling deprived. I've currently got a saucy little batch that are supposed to tell me which monthly publishing mills I should drop or retain in my large print romance collection!

Spent three hours studying for certifications exams today before getting fed up with noisy neighbors and taking a break for a bath. It's totally cool and normal to see a bunch of the stuff that was common use when I last worked in tech now covered under legacy hardware I'm not crumbling into dust you're crumbl*crumble*
Hmmm my boss told me the other day he wants me to lean into AI, both because its coming and I'm going to need to be securing it, but also because being a "prompt engineer" who can help the less tech savvy learn how to use the AI would be helpful.
I hate that!
Also we may be told in October to start coming into the office 4 days a week.
In the last 24 hours 5 people quit and the introspective of am I the reason hit managers. I mean not me but they started to question how they manage and such They in the ugly night last night was asked if you were quiting too {they did not ask me I was too busy dying in HBA}

I couldn't possibly deprive you. I am resigned to being spreadsheetless until the 2nd.
Last minute huge account change that's gonna have me working for the rest of the evening let's goooooooooo
So now that you've been doing the job for a while, how's it compare to banging on machines with wrenches?
Honestly there are a few things I miss about it but over all it's way fuckin better by a country mile. I actually feel like I'm kinda on the forefront of some stuff and my insights and opinions are actually listened to and feel like I can suggest changes that will be implemented if needed.
Actually seems like I'm on track to move up and not get dicked over.
So between the steel chair to the face that came friday

Oh anything.
Picks book.
Oh not that. I don't read that.
Repeat x5, getting more and more generic till narrowed down to inoffensive contemporary fiction.
I'll just take that.

I'm normally super good at handling this. I empathise with them: No to fantasy book "Ah yeah you like more realistic situations, blah blah, smile understandingly" etc, and I ask questions with examples to try and narrow down what they like so I can figure it out.
But she resisted the questions because she clearly wasn't ready to think, she just wanted a book.
I actually started to lose my temper a little, not that you would ever see this on my face, all smiles and happy. I ended up just picking up books on the new displays that looked contemporary, skimming the blurb, and explaining the appeal characteristics of the book to her until we got one she felt was good enough.
And then I felt a little bad later when it turned out she wanted the book because she had a family member in hospital and was in a situation where she just needed to wait.
So I feel shitty for being annoyed. It's just a book.
But it was still annoying. So I needed to get that out and then throw it away.

We finally got rid of password rotation at work (moved to 12 character passwords with no other requirements) a year and a half ago, and it’s been great. Except our payroll company (which we log into to to clock in/out daily) has a 120 rotating password requirement, still. So it’s super annoying having one system with a different, ever changing password.
Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust
