S4 of Stranger Things has a pretty great new character and an absolutely sick needle drop. Although I guess it's not really a needle drop. Anywho, it's pretty dope
Netflix is not good at making television shows. Plus the stars all got famous and it’s hard to schedule em all now with how big the cast is.
9 years but only 4 complete seasons with the 5th still in production.
This... This does seem like a weird thing to even allow for the continuation of a television show.
How did we get here, when it used to be that a TV actor usually starred in one movie a year (which was almost always filmed during the summer, when their show wasn't actively in production).
I don't hate Stranger Things, and have found myself enjoying it quite a bit here and there, but (and I say this with every bit of baggage you'd like to infer) it feels like the most JJ Abrams-ass show that JJ Abrams never made.
I say this with as much care as possible, but you folks have got to try to move beyond the shadow of Mr. Abrams.
A singular artist who you don't care for shouldn't have this much pull on your creative passions.
What's interesting is that he does suck and does do harm, but that stuff doesn't get talked about nearly as much as two mediocre movies in a franchise with a non-zero number of mediocre movies already
Like the massive, go-nowhere development deal at HBOMax. Not only did he take up 14 slots on a development slate, he burned the time and talent of everyone who got sucked into those 14 blackholes. Hundreds of people wasting time and resources, because he overextended and couldn't relinquish control. Burned it all rather than loosen his grip.
HBOMax was doing a lot of interesting stuff when they debuted, and then their content pipeline got clogged, and Abrams was the blockage. We'll literally never know what could've been, because the industry retraction is so severe that the money may never flow like that again in our lifetimes.
But it isn't as funny or as easy to complain about that as "Somehow, something something returned"

Longer seasons kept actors employed longer. Actors want to be working, they want to be out there, getting attention. If the show isn't giving them enough work/attention, they have to go get it elsewhere.
But streaming just keeps refusing to make television, and then all these knock on problems happen.

Stranger Things taking so damn long to come out was a big part of why I lost interest.
I didn’t like the show enough to wait so long between seasons.

It's remarkable how severely my anxiety increased the instant

That’s why I have the Does the Dog Die app on my phone and I try to update it with information when I watch weird obscure shit nobody watches

I don't know how I had never heard of this. It forms an infuriating pair with Sony "12 Live Service Games" Interactive Entertainment, that's for sure.
Every season has been quite good, but in different ways. Season 1 was probably the best because it came out of nowhere, and while I appreciate and enjoy everything we've gotten, in later seasons some of the characters it felt like they didn't know what to do with them. I feel like the series would have been better off being a time-capsule 1980s based anthology series where each season was a self-contained story, allowing them to go into different casts and also produce seasons faster.
It’s a real good time! Probably my favorite Abrams thing if we aren’t counting Fringe.
But he did nail the Fringe theme song.
I love turning up the surround sound and watching the train crash scene.

I've been marathoning the 2004 The Batman, something I'm familiar with but I don't think I saw much past season 1. Overall it's fine so far, I like a jovial Bruce and the designs of the rogue's gallery and the Batmobile are between fun and "at least they did something different".
Anyway in this episode the Joker traps people who wronged him in a theatre. He doesn't restrain anyone, barring gluing their shoes to the floor. His plan is to use a raygun that traps his victims into stone playing cards.
Now, if you're wondering, "why don't people take their shoes off?" one of the detectives does realise this a minute into being captured, but is told by his partner to not do anything rash... before she does the exact same thing shortly after and gets carded. Please show up soon Commisioner Gordon.

I'm genuinely not sure why there hasn't been more buzz here around slow horses, I've been watching it from day one. In the best tradition of Le Carré, with all that implies.
But it's got 10 Emmy noms, so I guess someone must be paying attention.
Probably because it’s on Apple TV.
I like the series! It’s exciting! It’s well acted!
But yet I keep forgetting about it because it’s on Apple TV and because of this I’ve only watched for episodes.
Stranger Things 4 really felt like "The writers have no idea what to do with 3/4ths of these characters, and they are also contractually required to have them in every episode."
I don't like Stranger Things a ton, in part because calling it an "original" series feels like a stretch for me personally
I don't think it improves any on the Amblin films it's indebted to. I'd rather just toss one of those on than watch the very expensive, not especially deft fanfiction version
I totally get that it's different strokes for different folks but I don't think it's fair to not consider the show an original series just because it shares some DNA with Amblin films. There's tons of heavily referential work out there that I don't think people are that critical of - things like the X-Files, The Simpsons, etc.

Everyone's line on what's "homage" and what's "lifting" is different, and Stranger Things happens to fall on the wrong side of mine
I don't think they're bad people or that people who like the show are fools or whatever, I just don't think the show improves sufficiently on the source material for my tastes

The only character they were actually willing to kill for real is the abusive, racist step brother.
The fact that they actually showed her getting boneitis'd really surprised me. And then of course they backpedal almost immediately.

Weirdly, I wasn’t even thinking of those when I made the comparison. More of the Super 8 flavor of wide-eyed but aimless nostalgia Abrams.

Was there ever any humor in it to begin with? I don’t remember ever not feeling kind of uncomfortable when Homer strangled Bart
And the cast includes Kaniehtiio Horne, fuck yeah.
