Finally finished EDF 6. They went heavier on the plot this time, but not in a very... competent way. There's a truly impressive amount of purely reused content, which is partially designed to show off the plot's time loop concept, except they're VERY BAD at doing that. You'd think in a time loop story, some characters would repeat their lines to demonstrate they are existing in that time for their first time, subjectively to them, while the characters aware of the loop would react to the loops dynamically, say new things, make new plans, etc. For some inexplicable reason, the MAIN character who is aware of the loops is the most repetitive of all of them. On your 4th or 5th loop, he will be intentionally saying the same things when that same scenario comes up and it makes you feel like you're going crazy. A large part of the issue is that generally speaking, the "characters" in this game don't have names, so it's much more difficult than you'd think to track the actions and activities of the few characters designed to matter in the story. There's a "Sergeant" or perhaps a "Captain", that you run into numerous times in the story, but he doesn't have a name or a serial number or anything, so sometimes Command will say "Go help the Sergeant" and you'll wonder "that one from the slow walking levels in the base or like... a different one?" Despite having 150+ levels of content, I would say about 70% of them do literally nothing at all to advance the plot. Which you could say, "Well, EDF isn't ABOUT the plot, just blowing up monsters is the fun part!" Which, I would probably agree except that this game does NOT agree with you. The first level of the game makes your character walk at the slowest possible speed to listen to characters recite extremely bad dialogue at you, sometimes even forcing you to a halt to say, "Walk over here," (which you WERE doing before the game forced you to stop!) Still, an annoying tutorial level is just a minor impediment, surely? Nope! This is a time travel story, and the game returns you to that walk and talk conservatively at least 5 times. The lead-in to the ending introduces an intriguing concept
time travel through the level choosing screen, ooooooo
that it mostly completely squanders by having approximately one of the levels make any difference whatsoever. Regarding the final boss:
if the game is going to make you fight from LUDICROUS ranges, they should really, really, REALLY explicitly tell you that in the mission select screen. I had to go back 3 weapon upgrades to select a gun that could even fight at that range, it was dumb.
Ignoring my numerous problems with the plot, it's mostly a minor improvement from 5, which was a major improvement (gameplay-wise only) from 4. Lots of new weapons and pleasingly, LOTS of new enemies that we've never seen before. I would have never stuck with 150 levels of dreck without the really fun continuous sequence of unlocking new weapons and constantly having brand new things to shoot with them. This game makes Destiny look truly laughable in the sense that Destiny/Destiny 2 over 7 years has invented fewer new enemies than this game has in one sequel.
I'd call EDF 4.1 an 8/10, EDF 5 a soft 7/10, and EDF 6 a much better 7/10. (EDF 2017/3 is a 6/10).
It feels weird for them to do a StarCraft spin off, surely the better bet would be a Warcraft action game of some type? The cultural attachment to the name “Warcraft” is way higher and more well known, and WoW is still massively popular and had a recently released well received expansion
I bet it’ll just be some live service destiny style slop anyway, not what I wanted which was a single player focussed action game

is there even a market for that? destiny is eos and I can't think of any noteworthy clones. the money nowadays is in 'infinte' content pvp games.
I mean it doesn’t sound like a pvp but it could be. I just assumed it would be anything but a StarCraft ghost single player kind of game and more like a live service thing, but it could be another overwatch, which seems insane to me given how overwatch 2 turned out
And yeah destiny is dead and live service games are failing left and right, but that isn’t stopping publishers from pushing them. Horizon is getting a live service game for example. They’ll never stop spinning that roulette wheel
Also yeah StarCraft has guns, I’m just saying that if I were in charge of blizzard and I wanted to spin off one of my products into another genre it wouldn’t be the one that hasn’t been in the zeitgeist for a decade. I’m not saying I wouldn’t love a StarCraft ghost style game, it’s just I’d assume they’d want to use Warcraft as their safer bet for spin offs
live service is a pretty general thing I guess. diablo 4 is a live service game, though I have no idea how well that's going. I kicked around for a few seasons but once you have every class at 70ish you're pretty much done with the game
Last I heard about Diablo 4 they made 150 million from cosmetic microtransactions alone so it’s probably doing ok

I finished Tactical Breach Wizards, heck of a game. In a perfect world I would have liked some more chat sections in the middle, but the ones we do get were electric.

it sounds crazy but $150 million isn't very much for a game that's been out as long as it has. but the best feature of the diablo 4 cash shop was how easy it was to ignore

They don't even call Hearthstone "Heroes of Warcraft" anymore.
Also I feel like if you want to get your non-RTS warcraft fix, that's what WoW is for. Starcraft ain't got nothing.
Yeah they have a Warcraft action game, named world of warcraft. And while it might not feel like what you mean by action, watching players completely fail to move out of the way of attacks and eat shit will paint a picture of the average gamer's capabilties.

I mean a game that has action in it isn’t really what I mean. I mean like a character action game, non multiplayer. And yes I get that wow is a spin off of the RTS but basically what I’m saying is if you’re going to go for like a big AAA mainline action game spin off my money would be setting it in the Warcraft universe just for name appeal and brand recognition alone
Also yeah the average gamer has bad reaction time, but also elden ring is the most successful game of the last couple of years, so I think a large swathe of people buying games can handle real time action or at least will buy a product featuring it
Tho from what I know about blizzard it’s likely it isn’t a big budget AAA character action game, since that’s costly and I don’t really know of any teams they have internally that can make something like that, and so is going to be more likely a PvE shooter or something

As a live service game Warframe is still going plenty strong

Raids in World of Warcraft illustrates an important concept in a funny way: even a very low individual failure rate can, with enough repetitions, result in a very high failure rate.
The example I love is Thaddeus, which has one (1) main mechanic: every 15 seconds (or whatever I forget the timing) everyone is told to go to either the left side or right side, and if anyone fucks it up everybody dies. 40 people had to do this, flawlessly, for what like three minutes? while also doing their normal game-playing stuff of damaging and healing and tanking. That's it.
This was an encounter in the most difficult raid in vanilla wow.
Even if you only fuck it up one in a THOUSAND times, if it has to be done five hundred times to succeed, you'll still be collectively failing 40% of the time.
the hardest part of thaddeus was that the servers absolutely couldn't handle the encounter.
when my vanilla guild killed thaddeus we had to do attempts at 4am because otherwise the lag would cause random deaths even from people in the right locations.
that happens in FF14 as well even with much smaller raid sizes(8). even though everyone knows the fight and can do it one person can blow up the raid and you end up having to redo it over and over sometimes.
