is that it is the earliest game i am aware of that lets you transfer your save data from one game to the next
in arc the lad 2, you play as an entirely new party. the cast of arc 1 are all fugitives who are wanted for committing a bunch of horrible war crimes, because the bad guys have been framing them for all their bad guy stuff ever since the end of the first game.
Eventually, you get to a boss fight that's way too hard for your guys to deal with. and then just before you get wiped, the party of the first game shows up, and if you have an Arc 1 endgame save, they'll have all the stats and equipment from it

There's this one dev-within-the-game, Thorson Petter. Even in anecdotes told in two-sentence allusion, he's an annoying, pretentious blowhard. His games are abrasive and demand you embrace their own weird, insular logic. He is a parody of a certain kind of game dev.
They keep being my favorites, because I am a parody of a certain kind of game player.
But I really enjoyed Arc the Lad 2
Arc the Lad 3 is kind of mediocre to poor, unfortunately
yeah perhaps the only problem is that playing through arc 1 just to tee up the thing in arc 2 is a minor slog
the good thing is that at least it's a relatively short game, especially for a JRPG
i remember arc 2 being a huge sprawling epic but i was again also 11 years old when i played it so who knows if that's accurate or not

This probably would have been more impressive if Phantasie II had ever also been ported to Amiga as well, but alas. I have no idea how that was supposed to work, at least on Amiga. I'm informed it did work just fine on DOS.

I semi-recently replayed Golden Sun, so I can confidently say it's only 260 characters long on the most detailed version (you could decide how much you cared about getting their entire inventory or just their djinn and level, etc.)
Golden Sun was great.
a) GoG doesn't require you own the game to comment&rate it

The one that sticks out to me is golden sun.
Because the first game just ends at the halfway point of the story and just….had no indication prior that it was just part one.
Then part two comes out and there is an extremely complicated code you get from doing a rather random series of button presses on the first game main menu.

due to a misclick i ended up playing Party House first, and it's a really competent little deckbuilder.
then i played a little Mortolia, which is... Lemmings? but aiming for perfect platforming runs? amazing.

like not in a pretentious way but it reminds me of a short story collection in a medium that has already abandoned trying to sell this form and has instead gone all-in on novels and it’s sort of… important to me as an artist to remember a well-tended and complete minimalism is okay? in game design. it’s perfect. it is beautiful. it is a love letter to game design and to video games. it is the realization of a hundred doodles that are no longer commercially viable. i feel like someone sold me their notebook, or their childhood dreams.
I loved it at the start (played it via GamePads), but hit a roadblock early on and stalled. Tell me if it keeps being good and there are no bugs, I might just buy it on Steam.
I've learnt all it's attacks but it gets to the point where it's using all of them so rapidly that I my fingers get all muddled
Still, it seems solvable without luck so I'll keep going
And the reveal that a room you've passed through a few times at this point was actually hiding her and the rest of the brains behind an illusion
