WaPo: As Taliban starts restricting men, too, some regret not speaking up sooner

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/09/22/afghanistan-taliban-restrictions-men-beards/
The past four weeks, however, have brought significant changes for them, too. New laws promulgated in late August mandate that men wear a fist-long beard, bar them from imitating non-Muslims in appearance or behavior, widely interpreted as a prohibition against jeans, and ban haircuts that are against Islamic law, which essentially means short or Western styles. Men are now also prohibited from looking at women other than their wives or relatives.

These first serious restrictions on men have come as a surprise to many in Afghanistan, according to a range of Afghans, including Taliban opponents, wavering supporters and even members of the Taliban regime, who spoke in phone interviews over the past two weeks. In a society where a man's voice is often perceived as far more powerful than a woman's, some men now wonder whether they should have spoken up sooner to defend the freedoms of their wives and daughters.

I never thought the leapords would eat MY face!

Scholars of repute indicate that the fist length starts with the top of the chin, meaning that the chin with the hair of the beard should be covered when one holds one's chin with one's hand. This gives a beard length of no more than 3-4 centimeters.

Alright I finished everything Sanderson has written so far in the Mistborn series

I might have to re-read them just to savor everything. Vin is such a good character! I loved her like a family member (named Mary Sue). Wax & Wayne were rather groanworthy but who couldn't love Marasi and MeLaan (and Sazed and TenSoon)

There's a Sanderson fan club at my work and while I'm not as enthusiastic about him as they are (I've listened to the Stormlight Archives but have consumed nothing else), I just got through part 1 of Mistborn and am enjoying it so far

I'm pretty willing to put up with some bloat because I really like what he does with the whole "slowly add in new perspectives in a way that lets us have a wider view of things." I feel like you gotta let each step of that simmer to really get a stew going

Also the older I get the more value I place on something existing when evaluating how good it is; none of the books I've written* are anywhere near as good as Sanderson's worst, and he just keeps writing more of them

Hmm listened to Mistborn but then bounced off well of ascension pretty hard, maybe should give it a second try

Yeah the bloat is only a mild issue because I enjoy the worldbuilding and minor characters that get a chance to shine. Plus I can skim or take my time or re-read. I forgot just how good reading is for that. Pace, pfft. I am the editor!

The Well of Ascension is definitely the weakest and most seemingly bloated of the series. Very languid and frustrating. I only managed to complete it because I was desperate to continue on and know what happened in the third book

What I remember from taking it in my 20's is like, sleep problems, being just the sweatiest, and having to work extremely hard for the most disappointing orgasm if even that.

Five female contestants on upcoming Prime Video show Beast Games are launching legal action against his production company MrB2024 and Amazon in Los Angeles.
Billed as the largest ever reality competition series, 1,000 contestants are set to compete for a $5m (£3.7m) prize when the show airs - or if it airs. The lawsuit has plunged the show into crisis.

Among many redacted pages, the legal document includes allegations that they "particularly and collectively suffered" in an environment that "systematically fostered a culture of misogyny and sexism".

It cuts to the core of MrBeast's image as one of the nicest guys on the internet.
