The transition team has drafted a new document of Guiding Principles and New Rules for our community. These rules will go into effect on November 25. 2024.
Paradox is blaming XCOM for Lamplighters League flopping because the genre is "winner take all" and there's only room for one successful game in it.
My brother in Tzeench not only have there been a bunch of successful XCOM-like tactical games ONE OF THEM WAS PUBLISHED BY YOU.
Ah, yes, XCOM 2. Well, it was a pretty huge release. Back in 2016. I think the hype might have died down a little bit since then, allowing space for other titles in the genre. Like Battletech. But then, I'm not the CEO of videogame company, so what do I know?
It is my hope that HBS eventually makes another tactical RPG that makes Paradox wish they were still in bed together. I want Paradox to be standing outside HBS' window in the rain with a boom box, and then get hit by lightning.
There is now a demo out for the ridiculously pretty, aggressively UE5, ant game coming out next month, Empire of the Ants (not to be confused with Empires of the Undergrowth, which is also fantastic). It's a pretty meaty demo! It's basically a third person RTS where you're a commander ant running a colony. I had a lot of fun and will probably pick up the full version if the level variety is solid. But I'm mostly here to share how very pretty it is:
And the screenshots don't even really do it justice as far as how much bug life there is in a lot of those scenes. The entire floor is just teeming with ants and other bugs doing their own things, both near and far off in the distance. It's a blast to just wander around and explore stuff.
I played the demo yesterday. I'm 100% going to grab the game at some point. I'm a weird person though and slot my games to fit the seasons, and this has Spring written all over it.
I was curious what the full game would look like (when you beat the demo it teases a few different mission types), so I asked their official reddit account and got an answer:
Sounds like it should have a good variety of stuff to do!
Paradox's cope about Lamplighters living in the shadow of X-COM leaves me wondering why they aren't instead worried of being left in the dust by Hooded Horse.
Oh, wait. New thread:
I've not played it very much these past few months.
Yeah it's been great to see Hooded Horse step up and publish stuff of a similar style to what Paradox has tried to, but with what seems to be actual quality control. I hope they keep at it! They actually published Empires of the Undergrowth (not the UE5 one -- totally different Empire game about Ants), and I love that game a lot.
Been real disheartening to see Paradox just continue a downward spiral and starting to look more like the big publishers I felt they were previously an alternative to.
I've spent about an hour and a half doing nothing but Pleasantly Float in the base game. Kind of using it as a screensaver, but finding it weirdly hypnotic and chill, especially with the music and the new duck designs appearing every few minutes. Not bad at all for two bucks.
Nothing personal. It's just business.

Placid duck sim is the best for streamers you just like listening to because it's literally the perfect background video time waster
Wife just ordered a steam Deck for me for my birthday! It's the 64gb version but I should be OK to upgrade the memory myself later! I'm so excited!
Honestly 99% of games on the deck run completely indistinguishable on a fast microSD vs the internal storage. pick yourself up a decent microSD and you'll be golden

Can you switch out the cards as and when needed if you have different games installed on them?

Yes. Basically steam knows a game is on the SSD or on *a* MSD card. It'll check the MSD for a game you launch and if it's the wrong card you'll get an error. Switch cards and try again and it works.
I'm really enjoying Rogue Trader, but dang it crashes a lot. In 70 hours of playtime I've had two BSODs and about 20 CtDs. It's gotten so frustrating I've mapped quicksave to a button on my mouse so I can easily hit it every couple of minutes.
Considering the state it launched in I assumed it would be broken again once the DLC dropped, so I'm waiting for both plus at least one more patch before I replay.
I finally got to Act 2 of Rogue Trader this weekend, was overwhelmed with trying to make good leveling choices for prestige classes for everyone, and now we're coming up on a week since my last boot-up of the game and that usually indicates a game is dead for me so that sucks.

That is awesome! And my deck just shipped so should have it hopefully before my birthday! I just need to order a decent microsd card. If anyone has any recommendations feel free to lemme know.
Aaaaaargh! I'm so excited!

SanDisk or Samsung, as big as you can afford. "Extreme Pro" types are unnecessary, the Deck won't be able to make use of their extra speed. (I have a 512GB Samsung Evo Select, UHS class 3. As of yet it's the only one I have for my Deck.)
Use the Deck itself to format the card (it's in Settings>System if it doesn't prompt you). The format won't be readable by Windows, bear that in mind - remember it's a Linux PC so there are some foibles if you're only used to Windows.
Another useful bit of microSD knowledge - in game mode, they are hot-swappable. However, in desktop mode they aren't and you should unmount/mount them if you swap them.
(Also, if you ever take your Deck apart, remember to take the card out first or it'll literally snap in half.)

On the one hand, oil barrels + fireballs.
On the other hand, grappling hook + alien sniper rifle.

My Aussie sniper would win.
Hopefully GRAFT turns out to be good, too.

I'd love a new SimAnt, but the name is tied to the book it's based on: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_of_the_Ants_(novel)
I missed that being DLC in the chat, I thought you were linking the main game!

Shoulda been called CombAnts.
Comb Ants?
You didn't get 'em from this hair salon. Combs go right in the Barbicide when they're not in use!
I'd heard it was based on an book but I guess I just assumed "Empire of the Ants" was too specific of a title to have happened twice.

Well, eggnog season is almost upon us.
My main mission is to mostly do the MSQ and substories while generally ignoring the minigames to speed things up.
There are a metric ton of substories though. Might have to make some compromises even if they are my favorite parts.
All this HBS chat makes me want a new version of Battletech with no-shit voice acting and animation in cutscenes.
That is awesome! And my deck just shipped so should have it hopefully before my birthday! I just need to order a decent microsd card. If anyone has any recommendations feel free to lemme know.
I'm sure MNC Dover would have appreciated It.
