But is there a point where some venture capitalist decides that Coin Return is a $50m property with all our weird stuff and as a community we split it amongst ourselves?

I'd be fine selling out like that. Can we make our bylaws be fine with that?

I forgot if this was clarified, but are we going with the saas solution of xenforo or are we self-hosting it?

SaaS, though our test/staging environment is self hosted.

There are really no downsides to using the SaaS version with as wide-open as the addon capabilities are.

Does Xenforo allow for a role that's not a Mod or an Admin, but more of an administrative Staff role? They could have some limited privileges that are things users can't do for themselves but the forum rules call for such things to be done (like name changes now, they're kinda mostly just approved but a member of the site "staff" has to actually do it).

Does it make sense what I'm asking?

Are admin/mod tasks granular? I guess makes more sense as a question

maybe the real panopticon was the friends we made along the way

Technically, Vanilla's roles are super granular, down to what kind of subforums you can view, edit, moderate, change, etc. It's just a matter of adding a new role with specific permissions. I don't know what Xenforo's role structure is like, though.

I mean, the answer is yes.

We can go crazy with permissions with this stuff.

Yeah and with Vanilla I assume the primary concern is not wanting to rock the boat with how creaky everything seems to be.

We always could have done better and use permissions i think is what Hahn said but nobody ever bothered to use them when they could have.

This is why Vanilla wouldn't have been terrible if PA / the admin would have let things be used but we had a half decade of neglect.

Either way CoRe is gonna do it and use it better

Pulling this from the rules thread since it's kind of a technical thing (sort of? also philosophical?)

I'll check out the embed situation in XF tonight. Half of the problem here is that youtube embeds don't show the goddamn title until you start playing them

I don't know if it's a base XF situation or option on the XF forum I frequent (Ars) but at least there YouTube embeds don't use your logged in account. That could entirely be a privacy preservation option as much of the userbase there are the adblock/scriptblock etc sort.
Which I totally understand, but it's also kind of irritating as it means if you have say a YT Premium account then try and watch the video you get bombarded with ads that you wouldn't normally see or whatever.
Not sure if it's possible for that to be a settable user preference or would take some plugin work.

Huh. Does anyone else see ads in embedded youtubes here? I don't, but that could be several reasons.

  • ProtoBirbProtoBirb Registered User regular
I don’t have a blocker and I don’t remember ever seeing ads on videos here.

  • TofystedethTofystedeth Registered User regular
Yeah, I don't get ads here. It's just a thing I've noticed on other sites with embeds. Though these also don't seem to put the watched video in my history, so I'm not sure exactly how it does it.
And also having said that, now I'm not even entirely sure if I'm remembering correctly that it was webpage embeds or forum embeds.

Yeah I'd much rather not have embed watches be used for my personal algorithm. I'll test for that too this evening. I assume that'll continue to be the case, but who knows.

YouTube embeds show the video title, don't count in watch history, no ads (as far as I can tell).

A+ from xenforo with no additional effort

Bluesky works natively, although you pretty much have to click through for media.

    Twitter works as well.

Any other embeds people want me to test?

I would, personally, love to see Spotify (and maybe Apple Music for people who swing that way?) embeds work nicely.

Instagram would be nice, as well.

Not sure how simple or complex any of those would be.

Those 3 all work, right out of the box

  • minor incidentminor incident publicly subsidized! privately profitable!Registered User, Transition Team regular
Well damn, that's actually really impressive!

What about iframe-based embeds? (I'm thinking specifically of Bandcamp embedded players, but I know plenty of other sites use iframes for embeds)

Iframe embeds like Bandcamp do not work, no. Probably for the best, allowing HTML would be a disaster.

Unrelated: We'll have both inline AND paragraph spoilers. Inline spoilers blur the text until tapped/clicked, paragraph spoilers actually pops up a modal for you to enter a spoiler description. When rendered it works pretty much like Vanilla

I figured as much, and yeah, probably for the best, tbh. Still, those other embeds working out of the box is a huge QoL improvement!

And the spoiler situation is great on Xenforo. Love the ability to do inline spoilers like that, in addition to big paragraph blocks.

Fediverse/ActivityPub posts? I imagine those would require specific tags though what with the whole federated business.

Well, it's doing something with that mastodon link that's different from a generic URL, but I don't know what it's supposed to show
