if it's anything like the legacy comics leftover after the bubble burst it's just old ad code.
I remember some truly terrible shit on my abandoned project wonderful banner in like summer 2016 before I turned my site off.
Unless you really go into your google ads control panel and basically ban most campaigns by default (and thus kill 90% of your ad income), google will serve whatever the heck someone submits which includes the worst popup-malware-javascript horrors you've seen because they bid relatively high because google takes money first and bans later because they do not give a fuck and neither do these websites.
I think it depends on the art we use, and how the artist feels. I believe a few of the ideas have been cribbed from other places which would obviously depend on how the original artist feels.

edit: and this would be me trying to get the items at or close to cost, I don't work for the company but I'd owe them a favor on like some freelance design or something. I would be making nothing from this.
That's an option if we know we have a certain level of demand. There's also the Print-on-Demand option, which I've used extensively. It's lower margin, but zero risk and no logistical load (shipping, storing, packing, etc). I'm not opposed to either direction, but we'd definitely need sort of an "interest check" or even "pre-order" if we did a batch print, I think.
(and again, it goes without saying that the artist would have to be on board, and that their art is their sole creation, no AI, no un-licensed assets, etc)
Agreed. A lump sum to license the art and a cut of each shirt sold would be my amateur instinct to offer
The only carve out I would give here is if the artist is of the community and donating their work in the same way we are donating our time, it is a choice they can make.
A whole lot of us are doing this for free, and if they wanted to join in that way that would be awesome.
If no, then yes absolutely art is valued. We should have a fair policy around how they are paid for their efforts if we contract with an artist.
We'd get the art first, I'd do mockups, people would vote or agree on designs, and the artist would be offered compensation
then it would be a pre-sale kind of drive, so once I know that 20 people want t-shirts and 10 want Coin Purses or whatever I can have a quote for that with whatever the transparent cost will be and people can decide if it's worth it.
Happy to do this if someone else builds the surveys, and I can get base prices together and just some different styles in the mean time off to the side.
No rush or commitment, y'all just let me know.
Deeper than that too, adsense scrapes the content of what you serve to figure out what's appropriate to deliver.
Guess how much time the forum at large talks about the goings on of politics or politics-adjacent topics in any sort of capacity. Guess which political party funnels absolute gobs of money into ads that target politics heavy content to hopefully radicalize folks.
It'd be a full time job to block out all that, yeah. And even in the best of circumstances, you don't get much ad revenue from adsense. You get even less when the culture is tech centric and understands the dangers of not using adblock.
Even with 3+ million page views a month I'd be surprised if the revenue per month is over $20. Unless there's just that many folks here raw dogging the internet without ublock origin or clubPA.
I still think it's incredibly important to not serve up ads, they're dangerous even if it generates enough income to keep the lights on.
.... which might partly explain their demise

I had to install pihole because the shit was becoming too much on my phone.
I don't know how y'all do it!
But amateurhour the tractor parts that show up in the ads I'm glad I know the minimal cost of a 3pt PTO wood chipper or flail mower.

BOWEN: THE BLOCKER
Mine seems to do alright, but I'll admit firefox with ublock is so much better on mobile.
I am the Rural (short) King
Precisely why my Exceptions list for uBlock is empty.

As the only TT member willing to tackle bookkeeping, it pleases me to post our inaugural financial report!
And it's a weird one! A few members of the TT have fronted the costs of some tech-related costs. Next month has a few more capital expenses and may contain some formal fundraising, but then things should start to stabilize.
Xenforo has a PWA, and we already meet one of the more restrictive requirements, a title under 12 characters.
Yeah, I got some colorful pieces of paper with bridges on em burning in my pocket!
It's going to include little rewards for each milestone reached, thinking of them is very fun.
Executing them... somewhat time consuming.
Also, creating a thermometer in paint: Suprisingly difficult? Why do I sigh every time I open paint.net?
Lets .. not do that one
Note to self: Somehow sell chicken... think of different reward.
The problem with chasing Dickerdooles is it becomes hard to understand the names being called out while you stuff your face with penis biscuits.
That's not to say it wouldn't be entertaining, just that there is added degradation in the signal.
