Cheap (or free), easy-to-use editing software

I'll be doing a short film with friends for a local quiz. It won't be anything fancy: the video will consist of 30-40 one-second snippets recorded with an iPhone, I might record some sound separately, and if I can add some kind of simple '70s-style filter, all the better.

What would people recommend? I've done some work in the past with Adobe Premiere (10+ years ago) and Vegas Movie Studio (about 3-4 years ago), but really just simple amateur stuff. I'd most likely need the software for a couple of days only, so I could imagine getting a one-month subscription if necessary, but obviously I wouldn't be against free software. However, I'd rather pay a little something than have a watermark displayed on the resulting video.

For what you are describing, getting full fledged software is probably excessive. I do a lot of video editing on my phone these days. I don't know if the app is available on iPhone but, I use an app called VideoShow on android and it does everything you need and is free (ad supported) or the ad free version is a few bucks. For instance to remove the watermark you watch a 30 second ad. I've used it years now. If your phone can handle it, it can render at high resolutions and frame rate.

Thank you for that suggestion. I have to admit that I prefer doing this kind of thing on a PC, but that may be because I've never done it on a portable device.

Don't take this as a strong recommendation because I don't have much experience with it and I don't do much video editing

    But consider Davinci Resolve

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

Cheers, I might give that one a try.

For something that you are doing for a short period, it might just be easiest to grab a demo version of the software of your choice and just use that.

Davinci resolve (free version) is what my kid uses to make/edit videos for his school projects, and as far as I can tell he hasn't found anything that it can't do yet.

Generally a good idea, but the problem with this seems to be that demo versions tend to have watermarks, and that's something I want to avoid.
