It seems that evertime i turn on my computer and monitor the monitor will work for 5 secs then go black, turning it off and then on fixes this problem but only for another 5 secs. I have to do this about 5 + times until the monitor just remains on.

Any idea what the problem is ?

If this is a CRT, you might have a bad relay. Ever since Energy Star certified CRTs became the defacto standard, there has been a relay on the main power to the tube that detects when there is and is not a signal and accordingly shuts down the tube. However, because relays by design are electromagnets that determine switch state, when those electromagnets weaken the switch state becomes unreliable.
