When I was a kid, we had an 8track player as part of our stereo setup. It was in the early to mid-80s and already pretty outdated, so we didn't have many tapes for it (my parents listened mostly to records at that point.)
However, there were a few, one of which was a black 8 track with a white label, no writing on it at all. I used to pop it in and press the button that made it skip songs until I got to the song below. I'm pretty sure it was a bootleg live version in hindsight. Later, when I hit my mid 30s, I had such a memory of the song, I searched online for the lyrics and found it was John Prine. I've been a huge fan ever since, and now have nearly his entire discography on vinyl.

My parents listened to barely any music. Which is a shame because they (still) have a banging 70s/80s audio setup. I doubt it’s like the most insane high end audio setup or anything, but it’s got a dedicated amp and equalisers and as a kid, we all just loved pushing all the buttons and switches.
About the only thing I remember actually listening to is Billy Joel.

Oh shit how could I forget Heart?! I literally went to see them with my step-dad a couple years ago and they played this. Of course Mike McReady come out from backstage to play with them. That show fucking ruled.
I listen mostly to blues based rock, metal, and industrial so our tastes rarely converge. My mother was all about big band, swing, and some country (who doesn't listen to Dolly now and a again?). Lots of Glen Miller and Andrews Sisters.
My mom was kind of an asshole when it came to music and didn't know what things were but still had firm opinions about them. My dad liked pretty inoffensive rock music but she thought Collective Soul was harsh metal (lol) and heard me listening to Chumbawumba's Tubthumping cause I taped it off the radio and disapprovingly called it rap (lmao).
I did at least get exposed to a lot of Queen growing up when she wasn't listening to god awful bluegrass music.
I'm a dad and I listen to a lot of Pink Floyd - does that count? I have a soft spot for The Wall and most of Dark Side of the Moon (I'm the weirdo that skips over Great Gig in the Sky).
At my last job, my cubicle neighbor and I quickly learned that in addition to both being former math teachers that we both knew pretty much every Barry Manilow song. He was the artist of choice for both of our mothers growing up and his songs just stick with you.
My parents had pretty eclectic taste, which is why to varying degrees I love musicals, orchestral, blues, jazz, Motown, old country (Patsy Cline I always think of as Dad's favorite, or Johnny Cash), your various 50-80s rock & pop, some world and folk (& filk bc my parents are nerrrrrrrrds); not sure what Mom's listening to now, but Dad still finds new stuff to like.
They've been open to some of the electronic music I cycle through, it's just not their taste. Which is fair, because I'm pretty particular within that umbrella. They seem far more interested in melody & lyrics than percussion -- it's all important, but putting the emphasis on rhythm explains to me why beat-heavy stuff like rap and electro generally don't grab them versus what I remember growing up with.
My grandpa pretty much loved bluegrass, some old country, and orchestral, and so do I.
He played guitar and banjo and would go perform of a weekend at the local jam, and his son played a shit ton of Van Halen but was in a touring band doing his thing before I was born. They were both truly talented, and it was a pleasure just hearing them noodle around. I'm hoping my niece takes an interest so my sister has an excuse to indulge that old love; Papaw taught her both, but it's hard to find the time.
Anyway, for example, I distinctly remember listening to "Devil Went Down to Georgia", the Heavy Metal soundtrack, a Time-Life cassette compilation of orchestral music that had been my grandma's (which has my favorite rendition of "Hall of the Mountain King", among other bangers), the live version of Pink Floyd's The Wall, the soundtrack for Jesus Christ Superstar, The Bangles' and Blondie's greatest hits, Leonard Nimoy reading "The Cool Green Hills of Earth", Holst's The Planets... Somebody bought Enigma's MCMXC a.D reasonably new, because I used that as a sleep cd in middle school/junior high.
Not bad for a spotty memory!
The Old Man's musical taste was probably one of the best things about the guy. He has an absolute fuckton of vinyls and an ancient record player I wasn't ever allowed to look at (unless he was trashed, in which case I would be held captive audience listening to the Evolution of Joe Walsch until the wee hours)
You could also tell what mood the guy was in from whatever bullshit he'd be (very badly, purposefully badly) singing as he walked through the door when he got off work. Any random George Thoroughgood song? More looking like a George Thorough-ly-good evening. The Eagles Hell Freezes Over? Some shit happened at work today, and you're about to hear all fucking about it. Complete muted silence until the keys get put down? Hit the deck, brother, make yourself neither seen nor heard cuz shits about to pop off and you don't want to be the excuse
+1

I adopted GenX from my 14 and 9 year old sisters so you already kinda nailed it.

I was terrified of thunder (not lightning) when I was a kid and my dad’s solution was to give me headphones and music until it was over.
Probably one of the big reasons I love music so much.
He introduced me to Oh Land by gifting me her cd out of the blue when it came out:

But other than that. If we were listening to the radio it was FOX 97.1 on GA. 60s and 70s oldies (rock, folk, Motown).
If it was tapes, or later CDs, it was Strait, Garth Brooks and James Taylor.
He also later got super into Sarah Brightman?
