So this has been bugging me for a few decades now, and Google and ChatGPT have both failed me. Let's see if the combined forum intelligence can do what computing has failed to do!
When I was a wee lad, I saw the latter half of what looks like a Shaw Brothers martial arts movie, but could also have been Golden Harvest. The style is distinctly 1970s/80s, more likely 70s.
What little I remember of the plot was that a elder apprentice to a dead martial arts school was putting what remained of his school through what looked like painful torture, but was actually rigorous training to bring their martial arts up the par. However none of his fellow younger apprentices knew this, and they all went through the training sustained by pure hatred for his betrayal.
Eventually at the end of the movie, it's a 1 v many, with the elder apprentice taking on all of his former friends. They kill him, and one of the final scenes of the movie is the one younger apprentice who managed to find out about his plan to train them, desperate to stop everything, climbs over a wall just in time to see him killed. The elder apprentice dies with a smile on his face, happy that his training brought fruit and the martial arts school was able to avenge itself.
So.... that's what I remember. Oddly specific, but over the years no search have lead to anything.

Shaw Brothers however, a lot of white robes/kimonos, open grassland or quarry fights.
Recognice any of these guys ?
Do you remember any locations?
The Heroes, 1980, however it wasn't a Shaw Brothers production, but that's fine. I found the movie!
Now to relive my childhood, complete with crappy set dressing, bad fake blood, but oh so good classical wuxia! Thanks a mil!
