Not sure if this relevant but it is a factoid I have learned since becoming a parent.

Like so many things that involve children you just have to not think about it and keep moving.

I haven't been in a ball pit since I was a child and I hope to god I never have to go into one for the rest of my life.

I'm a big fan of The Claw Machine, seems more in line with an arcade rather than a kids' play center.

You had me convinced until the last bit. I think we might belong in the kid's play center considering how we get on sometimes.

I feel like having tags and descriptions to explain the forum is going to do more work to elucidate meaning than any acronym ever could

We can put HTML in the descriptions, so something like this is viable

The second one with it colored is amazing for readability!

Why not put a proper descriptor of the sub forum as the main title, and then just go wild with all the puns and acronyms as subtitles. like "Politics and current Events" or whatever, and under that just go wild, call it the ballpit, the ballsack, quote ships from sci-fi novels, memes, dad jokes, go to town. But for clarity, the first read should be useful.

Yes, with a quick verbal "boom." You take a man's peko, you deny him his dab, all that is left is to rise up and tear down the walls of Jericho with a ".....not!" -TexiKen

    So it would be:

    TITLE
    ANOTHER TITLE
Description of what actually goes in there.

    ?

That's going to look pretty weird. If the idea is that the title has to be just a literal description of what goes in the subforum, then just have the titles be literal and don't bother with fun ones. I don't think we should "Ballistics: Ecks vs Sever" this.

It's what ElJeffe described as something that would "look pretty weird."

Point being that no, it doesn't look weird. It looks fine, having a title for the subforum, then a clear statement of the intended content, followed by a more detailed description.

and what Fantomas is asking for would be more like

    DIGITAL GAMES
    [Pixel Arcade] Console, PC etc

Maximum clarity at the expense of "whimsy" and "flavor".

Personally, I think the screenshots - especially with the color for emphasis - strike a good balance.

I’ve been sold on the whimsical arcade names with highlighted tag and full text description after that, based on the mocks.

I thought we’d have to forego the flavour to get a better reorg but it’s not that hard to keep both and have it clear if you, you know, actually draw simpler categories than before.

I like the normal bold text version (first pic), the orange bold text draws too much attention - actually more attention than the main title, and the orange color means unread posts in the left-side icon.

Oh didn't know that - in that case I would advocate for another color, but I definitely think the tag should be colored so as to stand out from the descriptive text better.

I'm generally assuming all colors are for contrast or randomly chosen only. I know we've got some folks with experience handling accessibility requirements so I'd want folks like that to weigh in before we finalize anything

What you posted looks good. I think because it doesn't scan to me as two titles, it scans as a title followed by descriptors.

If someone wants to call that two titles, fine by me!

Would it change to unread if someone makes a new post in the sub-forum?

This all looks great, but I'll mention it again - I suspect that if there is a "today's posts" or "new posts" option, I'll probably never look at the main forum index.

i mean new people are going to be functionally non existent and we will all memorise the locations, so while i think accessibility is important, stressing too hard about getting it all perfectly right is a bit of a muchness.

constantly changing the locations of subforums should be considered an act of war though

(PSN: Morninglord) (Steam: Morninglord) (WiiU: Morninglord22) I like to record and toss up a lot of random gaming videos here.

Naturally we should order subforums like we do threads, the most recently posted in one goes on top

I'd also consider a measure of average post quality, the Positive Reactions Per Post score

It's better than not having it colored, but honestly I don't care for it? I'd prefer a different color for the tag from the name and the descriptive text.
