Show me some artists you love

Hello all, somewhat inspired by the Time Capsule thread I thought it would be fun to have a thread where people post about their favorite artists. Nothing is off the table, you can talk about traditional 2D art/paintings, 3D artists, musicians, architects, authors or writers of any kind, video makers, curators, aesthetic pushers, sculptors, etc. the sky is the limit. Here's a few examples to get us going:

---

BRISCOE PARK
https://youtu.be/F10VPrF6eTI?si=zLyma6e5LsEk9k8u
79j4rwygt57b.jpg
njjox6t8sl1r.jpg

Master of the ambient, Briscoe's photos and videos evoke a sense of paradise lost, of places long forgotten, a dirty window into a time few remember. It's beautiful, it's haunting, it's the kind of thing I love to look at but am glad i am not there with them.

---

ALEX SCHAEFER
ozrkq7nclg2f.jpg
m3uafqgtmyxc.jpg

One of the best artists of our times, simply because there's no mistaking the message here: there's a rot about in society and maybe the only way to cleanse it is with fire.

---

DANIEL ARSHAM
dsjo3ytgg80t.jpg
irousleoj8he.jpg
ieu8mmcm0vps.jpg

Daniel is a sculptor and 3D artist who works with different materials and makes them flow and chip in a way that makes you keenly curious. Marble ripples like water and statues glisten with gems from between the cracks. Decay becomes decadence. Childhood items remade in crystal, like a Gameboy or a camera, symbolism i love.

---

SYD MEAD

ztd1g8thtf30.jpg
mw4pidoaoq1c.jpg

Maybe one of the most iconic sci-fi book cover artists of all time, Syd's art is extremely influential and his reach was far flung. He wasn't just a retro futurist, but and industrial designer. His art is bright, hopeful and stylish in way that, even though it's around technology has a warmth to it. It feels very human. (And he got to make a Gundam!)

---

ZDZISLAW BEKINSKI

fnfj4980v4z3.jpg
9k8dp9cfhuey.jpg

I wanna make a seperate post for HR Giger but, a close second is Bekinski. His art feels not just scary but it tells a story. The creatures feel organic, the bones and warlike imagery suggest a tension going on in his mind I couldn't begin to grasp. It may be horrific or at times difficult to understand, but I love to see it, the ideas send my mind reeling. Lovely stuff.

CHRIS FLEMING
I wanted to include a comedian and this person has been making me laugh for years, but recently they've just honed their comedic voice to the point every bit is weapons grade to me. Comedy is hard to recommend but I always try to show Chris to new people, because even if they don't like it I can get a kick out of folks reactions haha

LUKE RACK

cpqakaz5qutc.jpg

Luke makes 3D art in the liminal space, and I've always loved stuff like this. There's a lot of liminal art out there, but the good ones feel more natural, subtle, less overtly creepy and more just... Presenting an unusual, dreamlike space

GLASS BEAMS
I'm not sure how to describe this band, but it's like, the soundtrack to the coolest movie I haven't seen yet? The vibes keep me coming back

u m a m i
One of my favorite animators, he also makes all the original music for his shorts. Eerie, crackly nostalgia nightmare fuel. Again, right up my alley.

FRANK LLYOD WRIGHT
https://youtu.be/yb-kYt1lpnI?si=67u_XzVOhVXYSpzL
wmfqqk69wbkm.jpg
Frank Llyod Wright was an architect, designer, writer and teacher. Much of Frank's work is again, very human, it's about making spaces that are welcoming and inviting for people to actually exist in. He wasn't interested in making a building that lasted forever - he was interested in making a building that made people happy. Plus they ended up dang pretty to look at.

Falling Water is beautiful. The aesthetic is incredible. The halls were made cramped and dark so that whenever you enter a room it looks that much more open and lit.

The design is terrible. In addition to the water that runs through it on purpose, water collects everywhere. When you tour the place you see all these ugly roof and patio penetrations that weren't part of the original design but had to be added so the place didn't fall apart.

    I definitely recommend visiting it!

Poet and YouTuber, Sav makes content that kinda speaks to my soul. I've watched and rewatched some of these videos over and over, running my hands along the words like the cover of a well-read book. I turn the key phrases over in my mind, like a neat glass marble that when held to the sunlight reveals beautiful colors.

The late great Kentarou Miura rightly gets a lot of praise for his art, but usually it focuses on his big huge spreads, the big wow pages.

But there's a period there kinda in the middle of his Berserk run where he was at his absolute peak, where every comic page was laid out just perfectly. In particular chapters 185 & 186, a short little flashback story titled "Snow, Flames and..." blew me away when I first read it and it still blows me away now. Every page looks incredible, you can practically hear the gloomy pipe organ music:

I encourage everybody to just go to sites like Artstation and Polycount and Zbrushcentral. The people who make the "low art" of pop culture like videogames and movies have to hone those skills somewhere and it turns out they just post nonstop like a never ending stream of the most talented people to ever post art.

Like at one point I was reading a long-running Zbrushcentral sketchbook thread and then I realized the guy who posted it was literally Rick Baker.

Three of my all time top faves are Richey Beckett, Aaron Horkey, and SinEater who's real name I don't actually know but I've been following them for years. You'll notice a theme with the art styles here being primarily pen and ink work.

Richey Beckett is a super cool dude I've been able to talk to once or twice and does a lot of absolutely gorgeous illustrations for albums and posters for bands like Mastodon, Deftones, and even Metallica once or twice. Love his shit and it's one of my major influences in my own art style.

    pte0cx5q42ve.jpg

    jra292yx5bu2.jpg

Aaron Horkey is the texture master. Very few artists can achieve the level of granularity, depth and texture he can while still maintaining a kind of an avant garde stylization.

    5lu6bmjcg6dd.jpg

    zqjmdndsu6ci.jpg

SinEater is a UK based artist who does a kind of throw back medieval style with a heavy emphasis on that ole timey Anglo Saxon paganism that I love. He'll occasionally drop some real fuckin punk merch like his "Feed all Tyrants to the Land" stuff that I want real bad. But international shipping brings a single t-shirt to like, $50-60 American.

long before I was born my grandmother purchased 3 original painting from a man named pang tseng ying. They have always been some of my very favorite paintings. The more you stare at the ones she had the more faces would peek out at you.

    SCOTT MCCLOUD
Scott is well known for his books about comics, specifically "Understanding Comics" "Making Comics" and "Reinventing Comics." But he's also done some actual comics work, such as 1997's Zot! and 2015's The Sculptor. Zot! is directly inspired by Astro Boy and Tintin. But I became a fan of his with The Sculptor:

Julie Dillon is probably my all-time favorite artist

    https://www.juliedillonart.com/

When I was a wee lad, circa 2001-2, I was one of those kids who looked up "how to draw anime/manga" sites and I found this one that had perfect step-by-step guides on how to draw different anime and videogame characters. One day, when I was on the site, I noticed a link to the artist's main site - at the time, jdillon.net - and what I found there was absolutely mesmerizing
