As an owner of both, there were two-cassette versions of both that were naturally heavily abridged, and six-cassette versions that were the whole thing.
I got used to this with the Discworld audiobooks back in the old days, but those had different people doing the abridged and full versions (which was a shame, because Tony Robinson only did the abridged versions, and I thought he was easily the best one).
The Red Dwarf ones were all done by Barrie though. I think the abridged ones may have just been edited cuts from the full version (since it ended up being laid out like several episodes, cutting some out would have been easy enough).

They're finally out putting up the insulation on these stupid fucking pipes but it's just one maintenance guy so I'm having to like, help him.

You shouldn't be climbing 12' ladders by yourself. So I gotta be the ladder spotter/insulation hander offer.

    This is dumb.

I wish I were in my late 20s again

At least physical health wise not mental health wise

Or I wish I could just stop binge eating all the time but there literally isn't anything else that makes me feel good anymore. So I guess maybe mental health was better in my late 20s too.

All this talk of the audiobook got me listening to IWCD again: I like how Barrie makes Rimmer sound more nasally and whiny to keep it distinct from his default narrator voice, but it sounds authentic to the character. Of the main cast his weakest is probably Cat.

Am I going crazy or is there a whole bunch of content from the book that's missing from the audiobook? I remember an entire begining section to BTL that's not in the audiobook.

It might depend on your version? I know there was a later version with sound effects and stuff that trimmed a few things, while the Audible versions were transcribed from the cassette tape version which was more or less word for word. What part is missing?

I remember there being a large part of BTL where they're not aware they're in the game and it lays out all their fantasy lives and introduces kryten coming in to save them. In the audible version it skips all that and goes right to after kryten has told them they're in a game and their fantasies start to fall apart. Thats like 20% of the book is just missing which kinda sucks? It also makes less sense in this version because the characters just have a bunch of information they shouldn't know (because they found out in the cut parts) and you kinda just get plopped into the middle of events.

If I hadn't read the book years ago it'd be pretty confusing. I dunno why they decided to do this it's just wierd.

    That part is
the end of the first book. Part Two climaxes with the Me Squared plot, then we timeskip to making it home and being successful, when Lister starts getting pains on his arm that spell out a message. From this he realises what happened, rounds up Rimmer and Cat, and finally Kryten comes in to explain where they found the games. They resolve to leave, but Lister gets tempted to spend one more day and the book ends there on a cliffhanger.

Yep, you're right. Weird they put the start of the scenario in the previous book like that but I guess I never noticed in the past because I have the omnibus where it's all together anyway. Thanks!

Dungeons and Drag Queens is pretty great so far. I'm not into drag (no issues with it, just not my bag), and I'm still finding it a lot of fun. As a lifetime TTRPG player, one of my favorite things is seeing new players get swept up in a game and D&DQ is full of that energy and that's awesome to me.

Yeah. Kryten had to remind Lister that Rimmer sucks with a simulation. That was great.

Also the human race has been un-extincted by nano machines in season 8 with the crew alive but abandoning the big red at the end of the season.

Yeah....The Mirage hasn't been anywhere near as fun or interesting as the GAA ever was for me, which is unfortunate. I pretty much don't care about the story to it at all because it just feels...there. There's not really enough to make it feel engaging but too much that you can't just brain off and enjoy the stuff.

The area was fun, but the story was bad.

Also, did they just kinda fuck up and mean to do something else? I swear at the beginning it was like Kokomi was a fake. She didn't recognize the Traveler at all, and responded as if they had never met before. It was really weird. I expected her to end up being either a Fatui in disguise or one of the water droplets.

AFAIK it's pretty common for young children in CN (and JP, and KR) to refer to themselves in the third person. Not just as a trope.

So it's an easy shorthand for 'Klee is a child, developmentally, even if she's older than some other cast members (because elf)'.

YMMV on how that should be localized.

The whole idea behind M Corp was that it was so advanced that their technology was like magic. They could beam matter anywhere and alter people's perception of reality.

It is kind of a horrifying company.
