I'll go more into it when the season is over, but I feel like the Megumin spinoff/prequel show for Konosuba has been pretty bad. There's a bunch of reasons why. Joke density is low and the show doesn't even seem to have a preference for what KINDS of jokes it is aiming for... with one very bad exception. The animation is generally good (it's not all good) and the trademark EXPLOSION does not disappoint... in the rare cases we get to see it. You'd think a show about Megumin would have at least one explosion per episode... but nah. First it's a deeply unnecessary origin story for how she learned it (she... went to school and aced tests), and then even when she finally gets it, the show still seems to forget about it more often than not. The original Konosuba show has a laundry list of flaws, the movie being the worst of it where the humor drifted to outright bigotry, but when it wasn't doing that, it was often extremely funny. Effectively skewering heroic fantasy tropes, mythology, isekai tropes, work culture, capitalism, etc. The spinoff has potential with the village of cringey chunibyos, but it mainly squanders it. What this one seems really interested in is... pervert male characters. Like... nearly exclusively that's the go to joke. This guy is an incel loser who wants to gaslight or even kidnap the girl he "loves". All the girls hate him... and then tolerate his presence one second later. I guess we'll spend the next couple episodes helping this sex pest, why not? When she leaves, she even tells her sister to ask the sex pest for help if she gets into trouble! Then in the next town... pedos. Like, textually and literally. Again, we'll note out loud that this is bad and unacceptable... and then move past it and treat them normally for every subsequent scene. Why is modern anime like this, how did we get here?

The KonoSuba author kind of hit lightning in a bottle the first time with original KonoSuba. All his other novels have been unfunny and leaning on questionable material.

Point of order: I seem to recall that the Asaemon clan are executioners, rather than (or perhaps in addition to) being samurai. There was that one guy whose official job is corpse dissections who's considered to be doing necessary but societally dirty work. I don't think the state is necessarily throwing the best, most valuable warriors they have at this project; they're sending prison guards to make sure their operation's cannon fodder don't slip the leash and run off.

It also kinda bears mentioning how weird Sagiri's aspirations are.

She's a woman in a man's world, trying to show that she has what it takes to... kill prisoners for the state.

Like, she saw her father execute some dude as a kid and was just so impressed by how few fucks he seemed to give. His swordsmanship was mesmerizing!

    WfM19 thoughts and questions
So Ochs Earth forced Vanadis to implement GUND into mobile suits in a bid to compete with and overtake Spacian mobile suit manufacturers. Ochs Earth was forcibly bought out by the Mobile Suit Development Council made up of Spacian manufacturers, the Vanadis Institute was covertly wiped out, and the Benerit Group was formed following.

Ochs Earth’s leadership survived and would become the heads of the Space Assembly League, who are supposed to keep corporation activities under observation and intervene when necessary. Ochs Earth’s former leadership covertly provides remaining or the specs of GUND mobile suits to the Dawn of Fold.

Feng seems suspicious of the Space Assembly League council and of Prospera. On Earth, Prospera finds the stockpile of GUND weapons and destroys it, seemingly bitter about Ochs pushing Vanadis to make mobile suits. Prospera’s associate silences Feng.

Shaddiq realizes Prospera has figured out his ploy to move assets to Earth and his connection to Dawn of Fold.

So is the conflict between the remnants of Ochs Earth using the Space Assembly League to go after Benerit while secretly arming Earth mercenaries and Prospera trying to control Benerit to complete Quiet Zero? Is Shaddiq working with the former or do they just have overlap on Dawn of Fold? Was Feng both skeptical of the League’s motivations and Prospera, but not necessarily in the same way?

    Not quite

Ochs Earth was destroyed by the Benerit group during the Vanadis incident. But the space assembly league took note of the threat the GUND tech represented, and the fact that it scared the Benerit group and salvaged what it could/hid what it could. Those are all Lfrith pre-production models that Prospera wipes out.

Those have since been converted into the Lfrith thorn, Ur and presumably the Gundvolvas as well, wielded by Dawn of Fold as a proxy weapon to bring down the Benerit Group.

So currently you've got Benerit Group (with multiple sub factions, all working at cross purposes), dawn of fold (proxies for the SLA & Shaddiq - possibly working at cross purposes as well), Prospera's faction (wanting revenge for everything, possibly more), and the protags.

In other words it's a giant cluster fuck

It's definitely an issue with the breakneck pace.

Personally, I don't mind it as it makes the series richer for rewatching and analysis, and I appreciate the speed rather than the spinning the wheels many other Gundam shows have suffered from.

But I can def sympathize with finding it overwhelming, there's a ton of stuff going on

I don't think any details of the Witch of Mercury faction stuff is important but here's my synopsis:
So the background of Witch of Mercury seems to be a history in which the solar system was colonized by large multilateral corporate interests, of which the Benerit Group is just one. Once established, they used their monopoly on space infrastructure as well as the physical security granted by the distance of space to shut out any new Earth competitors and negate any Earth influence. Over some amount of time they became wealthy enough to straight up dictate terms to Earth. Space is, as in real life, a really terrible place for humans to live. Same goes for other celestial bodies. So the space folks still have a lot of interest in monopolizing the Earth too.The Council are, I believe, an organization created and run primarily by the space corps to police individual corporations from making decisions that would threaten the larger monopoly. Cathedra is a younger organization which I think might just be under the Benerit Group which was ostensibly created to destroy dangerous Gundam technology but in practice seems more like a private militia.

As for the Earth folks, they're pissed off at being economically exploited for generations for the benefit of the space corps who, as mentioned before, are in a position to dictate terms. Presumably the official governments have been totally bought out by the corpos or are otherwise toothless.

If you want a series that goes into a situation like Witch of Mercury (minus mechs) that goes into more detail, I'd suggest Planetes.

I will be honest with you, I am a person that likes complicated stories, but if not for reading stuff on the internet, I would have no idea what the subplot woth Orchs Earth is even about and how does it connect to the main plot. There has been so little focus in previous episodes on that, that dropping it now, 19 episodes into the series feels like a big "wait, what?".

This is what I mean by I don't know what the show expects me to know. Some folks know all this extra lore from external resources that the show only maybe hints at our mentions off hand once, so it's not even clear what's supposed to be mysterious intrigue Vs stuff they released elsewhere that they didn't bother covering in the show

Meanwhile, every protagonist spent the entire episode sitting in their rooms or in meetings. Yet again.
Because if there's one actual consistent in Witch From Mercury, it's that there will be a closeup of a tea set every episode.

    WfM 19:
I appreciate the bluntness of Suletta’s rebirth metaphor over the last 2 episodes. Being forcibly ejected from Aerial, her first meal with the Earth House crew being milk soup, and then actualizing on her newly gained knowledge and perspective to grasp what Prospera is doing.

Next episode will likely be a lot more active for our protagonists, especially Suletta as she’ll move to protect Miorine/confront Prospera.

I’m a bit interested by the phrasing of the Quiet Zero device at Plant Quetta being a “component” of QZ. It makes me wonder if there are other bits we haven’t seen or if that’s just because Aerial itself is the other component.

Also re: the lore/faction stuff: I believe they just recently re-aired the prologue on JP television and were advertising it on the official social media accounts. Seems like the timing was intentional to give a refresher on the Vanadis Incident/Ochs Earth.

Early on I could follow along fine because undefined Proper Noun was less important for what it was and more important for how characters behave and act around it. I could abstract these things just fine while a lot of folks struggled without defining what Proper Noun’s are.

The show is getting to the point where these terms are getting important for what they are and not set pieces for characters to convey their values and loyalties through. For technical jargon like Permit we are getting little bits at a time explaining what is going on there. For organizational groupings it’s a lil harder to define who is where, especially with loyalties actively shifting and changing before really knowing who the groups involved are.

    Tentative definition of war partitioning
Earth governments are fighting/manipulated into fighting each other, and the BG are partitioning clients between themselves to keep the sides evenly matched and/or to control who wins.
