I hit the season break in WfM last night.
Heckuva tonal shift there in the last 30 seconds.
I get that it's definitely upsetting to see someone get pulped in front of you, and Suletta's demeanor doesn't seem quite right for the circumstances (especially given her reaction when the same thing happened to her a few minutes prior). But the dude was trying to kill you and mobile suits are weapons of war. What exactly did you think was the end result of all that training with guns and missiles? Frankly I'm surprised it took this long for someone to die given how many got shot, impaled, or cut to pieces in duels.

I feel like that chart is a bit over complicated? There's gotta be a better way to present the info.

That said, I'm really enjoying the conjurers trick is having the focus be the school and the school kids, who aren't aware of the complicated corporate byplay going on, and how that then influences the audiences perception.

    It's a damn clever show

Again, it's The Tempest But With Giant Robots. One of the points of that play is that the kids have no awareness of the past that drives the action of the adults.

Oh I know! (I really need to read the Tempest - I hope Madeline Miller can get to her adaption soon. She's doing a take on Hades and Persephone, while dealing with long COVID).

It's just a really smart show though - even accounting for using Tempest as a base, there's a richness to it, and so many smart little things.

Man I know I only talk about like this show but Skip and Loafer just annihilated me this week, as per usual. The themes of "it's important to spend time with family" and "feeling distant from loved ones as they grow and change" hit home especially for where I'm at emotionally right now.

The watermelon crunching atmosphere piece in the middle was imo astounding, the vibes are immaculate. I'd have taken 10 hours of that.

It can be fun! And it let's you appreciate the full humor of "exit, pursued by bear"

Or you know, horror, since that got done gets bear'd. Not even an onstage death, just off screen bear'd

I'd say it's more than allusion, it's clearly a major influence on the series' plot. But they're doing more than simply adapting it to Gundam, for sure.
Sulletta is probably getting a happy ending after all this. Prospera I'd put at 90% likely to wind up dead. The other 10% she's locked up for life, and only because it's less sad for Sulletta that way.

    G-witch speculation
I could see Prospera metaphorically "breaking her staff" and releasing Aerial of her own volition before the end maybe, if she ever realizes her revenge isn't worth dragging her kids into hell with her.

it's about vikings and existentialism, it's very good and personally i think it's one of the best to come out recently

but the vikings are, well, violent bloodthirsty raiders, and there is a decent amount of graphic violence, so be warned on that front

    It's grim.

I've only watched season 1 so far, and it's good, but it's very very grim. Not in a pointless fashion, but in a "turns out the Vikings were not good people, and their culture was fucked" historically accurate fashion. Not light watching at all

The thing about Vinland Saga is that the whole first season is just setting you up for the rest of the story.

Can't properly explore a story about cycles of violence and the self-destructive nature of toxic masculinity without indulging in a bit of it first.

Yeah, this is part of why I've held off watching S2 - not that I don't want to watch it, but I'm aware of is general gist and that it's gonna be heavy watching and I'm just not in the headspace for it.

@MNC Dover if you haven't, give She-Ra or Kipo on Netflix a go, they're both excellent

I'm probably being unfair, and I'm happy to be wrong on this, but I get a very Diet Berserk feeling from it. The first season didn't grab me very much but I guess I just don't find Vikings super interesting, either. In the same vein I much prefer something like Golden Kamuy which has a similar vibe but one I can stomach getting through

Well, the good news is it is VERY much not Diet Berserk, or, even tangentially similar.

In fact...I'm completely comfortable saying outside of presented gender, Thorfinn is the literal exact opposite of Guts. Right down to weaponry, fighting style, and character.

Season 1 of Vinland Saga essentially exists for two scenes.
The Death of Thors, and the Death of Askeladd, and how they both affect Thorfinn going forward.

The second season, well, lets just say it's something no one should ruin.

I'm 27 volumes into Berserk and 26 volumes into Vinland Saga I can tell you that while they're exploring similar themes, they are very different works

Guts and Thorfinn are almost diametrically opposed WRT how to deal with their trauma

The metaphorical staircase of bodies shows up in part 2 of Vinland Saga, so don't let people say it's not riffing off Berserk. It very obviously is, it's just its own unique work, with its own unique themes and ideas.

Hey so this is a bit incorrect and I will spoil why.
There is explicitly a scene showing a rape during a raid with the main character looking on uncaring pretty early on. He does not participate and he is obviously a bit affected by it, and walks out. It doesn't glorify or tittilate it's shown as horrifying and there isn't any sexualisation of the woman.

    But it very much exists.

It's purpose is to show how broken he is, and how common this is in that time period. It's not a comfortable or safe scene at all.

I don't want anyone thinking they can walk into this manga without any confrontation, that could set someone off.
