A manga where characters end up stuck in transformations for increasingly long periods of time and you the reader realize oh fuck all this is happening its not reactions this kid needs to be killed

it's very "funny" to me that two of the biggest food shonen series(yakitate and food wars) were both shows which were so ridiculous rails didn't exist for them to go off of but went completely stratospheric in their final arcs. food wars' ending being "we've fired our culinary consultant so actually, all of this was real and there's underground chef mafia competitions for control of the clothes-exploding bloodline" was such a heel turn for me it kind of made me not enjoy the whole work, much like the end of revenge of the sith

Yeah Food Wars started out a fun schlocky mess but then somehow just turned completely to shit. It's a shame because as someone who worked in the service industry there were a couple good episodes about growing your skillset and advancing your career as a chef

The start of Food Wars was pretty good (if you can get past the fan service), but it started to go down hill, in my opinion, once they introduced Erina’s father. That was a series that did not need a mastermind type villain.

I'm down for someone having an orgasm from very delicious food. That's the kind of sexual experience even I would be willing to embark upon.

But yeah around when the Elite 10 start getting featured the series shifts away from real cooking towards more fantastical shonen archetypes. But even I was completely unprepared for what lay after the final clash with the 10. When someone claims they're a chef and they pull out a seasoning chainsaw you know you've gotten on a ride straight to loony land where nothing you knew matters anymore and you can't predict what's going to come next because logic was jettisoned for ballast. Also actual superpowers, as in the main antagonist of the final arc can utilize a chef's techniques if he uses their personal knife so of course first thing he does to establish "credibility" as a threat to the cast is he beats Jouichirou in a competition off screen and takes his knife as the prize.

Today’s Witch from Mercury in a nutshell:
Look at all the dead kids! Feel sad!

I think the writers have lost the plot. It’s very “Rocks fall. Everyone dies.”
You're so focused the imagery on-screen that you've missed the plot.

Shaddiq straight-up says this is still part of the plan. That in order for the war to start, there have to be Spacian casualties at home as well.

The kids at the school weren't really thinking about what they were training for. Now they've been brought face-to-face with the reality of it. The Spacian students are having to grapple with the horrors that their parents have been inflicting on the Earthians for years.

Shaddiq is hoping this will further the divide, and make war inevitable. But there's still a chance that, for the students at the Academy at least, they could come together, empathize with each other, and oppose the forces trying to spark a greater conflict.

One Piece Chapter 1085 is jam packed:
Double spoilers just to be safe.
Has been Imu been alive for centuries?
The Will of D! Alabasta is a country of D! Alabasta scattered the Ponegliffs, giving the world a chance against the World Government!
Sabo and Wapol also learn the secret of the world!
King Cobra faces death standing up, letting Sabo escape after Sabo failed to rescue Cobra.
A teaser for the Gorosei's abilities, as well as Imu's.
Lily D. Nefertari also mentions the Dawn the Minks and the Kozuki have been waiting for.
Jabra and Kalifa are back and kidnap Vivi to make her someone's pet on government orders. What the fuck?
Fujitora rebelled and helped free the slaves. Not such a bad guy after all!
Wapol, who knows the secret of the world, ended up in the protection of Big News Morgan?!

The story beat density here is so rich without being overwhelming. It's amazing. Everything is connected and coming together.

I'm not sure exactly what to think about the Norea and Elan #5 thing... I completely get him latching on to her like that, but I'm surprised he was able to get through to her at all (albeit it was mostly a setup so he could get to suffer even more)

wheeeee, I really want to see where the show goes from here next episode, based on the title for ep 21. I think the student's reactions to all of this is going to kind of make or break where things land.

In the episode named end of hope, nothing bad happened and any claims otherwise are earthian/Spacian (delete as appropriate) propaganda.

Actually that's a thing - linguistically, I'm not sure I like Earthian/Spacian as terms? I'd probably default to Earther/Space - my instinct is that in general, people are going to fall back on shorter names for things (I don't have anything hard to back that up, I'm a writer, not a linguist, but my impression is that people at least in English favor short syllable terms)

Utterly minor, just a thing that was tickling at my brain

One theory going around is that.
Petra's not dead, just maimed, and will get GUNDtech medical prothesis to replace her lower half.

I'm 50/50 on this. I think it would undercut shit badly to have her survive, but on the other hand we've only had talk about the GUND prosthetics outside of prospera - i'd like to see them come into play. Still bet they're going to be used for Delling.

Noera and E5 made sense to me, though - Trauma bonding is 110% a thing, and those two are hugely traumatized. The tragedy is even if they'd made it out, they'd have likely been awful for each other + two sets of trauma like that are very good at cutting each other to ribbons, no matter the good intents

I watched Robotech as a child and it was the first anime I ever saw. Of course, this was way before the internet and knowing about Macross/Robotech being different, but holy shit did it do a number on me. Characters got killed left and right. It was grim and a dark portrayal of the cost of war. Nothing like what Transformers, GI Joe, and He-Man would depict.

For that, Robotech/Macross will always have a special place in my heart. The only other anime from that universe I watch was Macross Plus, which was fucking amazing. I fear to watch anything else for the concerns of having it stray hard from the earlier material.

Macros Frontier is absolutely worth the time- just make sure you watch the series and not the movies (the movies have very pretty visuals, some fun songs, and nowhere near the depth of the series). Frontier is just plain good sci Fi.

Delta, the most recent one has good music, adorable merkittens, and... That's it. It just dosen't manage to execute on everything it sets up, which is a crying shame because there's a lot to like there crippled by a weak ending and some obnoxious Mystery box plotting.

Zero I haven't watched, but it does have this:

The Crunchyroll app on my PS4 is useless these days, and I'm not sure if it's my internet, my machine, the app itself, or something on CR's end.

When I watch a show, it's not loading much, so it inevitably stops, freezes, buffers, switches to SD, runs a little bit, then switches back to HD and the video and audio speed up a bunch and I miss ~20 seconds of the show. It keeps doing this no matter how long I watch an episode.

    Anyone else experiencing similar?

Also fun bit of world building from the latest WfM episode
the daribalde is under the schools limiter program the entire time it's throwing down with Shaddiq - unlike his Mecha.

And Guel still pulls off the win. Not only that, but it cleverly reinforces how scary the Aeriel is - the Michaelis has huge issues getting through the Daribalde's shields, even with the limiter turned off.

Aerial and Aerial rebuild had no such issues, even under the limiter.

He wasn’t trying to teach them how to make good food, he was trying to force everyone to make food the way he believed it should be made, exactly the same every time. He was trying to turn their culinary school into a fine dining McDonalds.

There's even a case of this attitude explicitly being brought up as bad for a chef very, very early in the series when Shinomiya expelled Megumi because she deviated from his recipe to compensate for the ingredients going off. He even acknowledges that her method was very good at addressing the problem with the ingredient but it didn't matter because how dare you change my recipe. That's the kind of cooking by the numbers that Erina's father wants to push. Don't think, don't try anything new, just follow the instructions like good little drones.
Of course there's the whole thing where this is all because he saw the person he idolized the most burn himself out by the constant drive for new flavors when all the high class people eating his food could never be satisfied for what it was, just for what he could do that would surpass it. That's the one thing I can empathize with him about, that all those rich fucks eating Joichirou's food didn't deserve to have it because they couldn't even appreciate how much time and effort went into a single dish.

Of course any such empathy goes right out the window when you learn the extent he abused his daughter just so he could carry out this master plan of his.

Basically the one redeeming plot point of the last season
We also learn that the god tongue gets to a point where the person can’t actually stomach any food unless everything is literally perfect, which happened to Erina’s mother and basically drove her to abandon her family if I’m remembering right.

So Azami first was grappling with his hero Joichiro disappearing from burn out, then he fell in love only for that woman to also leave because of the culinary world, and be left with a daughter who would eventually reach the same point.
