The Crunchyroll app on my PS4 is useless these days, and I'm not sure if it's my internet, my machine, the app itself, or something on CR's end.

When I watch a show, it's not loading much, so it inevitably stops, freezes, buffers, switches to SD, runs a little bit, then switches back to HD and the video and audio speed up a bunch and I miss ~20 seconds of the show. It keeps doing this no matter how long I watch an episode.

    Anyone else experiencing similar?

It's always been crap on PS4. (and 3)

It wasn't this bad in the previous version of the app. Maybe if I get a PS5 things will improve?

It's definitely the last thing on the incredibly small list of things I'd consider getting a PS5 for...

It's wild that Frontier is the only good Macross sequel. But I watched them all, and that's just how it is. Definitely give that one a shot though, just be prepared for some more modern anime tropes and designs.

Late on this, but speaking of food wars/Soma, the duo’s current series is pretty good so far; think Hikaru no Go, but in this case instead of a Go-playing ghost he’s a screenplay writer who died at 18 in the 90s, and has tasked the hapless protagonist to be his directing partner

The current arc where they’re guerrilla-shooting a short film is pretty good!

Also a good moral: splurge a bit on your crappy cell phone gimbal!

    WfM 20:
I can’t believe that they had Norea wearing Sophie’s bracelet under her coat this whole time only to reveal it right before she gets fucking obliterated.

They really wrapped up a lot of plot threads in this one, pretty much cleared the way to handle Quiet Zero and the SuleMio reunion through the last 4 episodes, along with the B-plots of the Jeturk brothers and the blossoming Earth/Space war/interplanetary politics.

When I think about all of the potential stuff they could try to cram into the back end of the series, I remind myself that Sunrise wants to use Ad Stella as the new UC. The creative team can lay out the basics of some interesting plot threads/concepts and allow others to explore them in more depth in later works. Not everything needs to be/will be wrapped up so neatly within the next 4 episodes with that expanded universe in mind.

Wait is that actually confirmed, @jgeis ? We've had a lot of theorizing that Sunrise would like to go in that direction given what a hit Witch From Mercury has been, but to my knowledge they're yet to announce any further projects in this setting (other than Vanadis Heart, which is the standard spin off manga they basically always do, and probably won't get translated)

I don’t know that it’s hard confirmed, but I thought some Sunrise folks made mention of that potential if WfM turned out to be a success. I’m just speculating based off that, since WfM has been hugely successful to the point it is being singled out in earnings reports for bringing in new fans.

In the episode named end of hope, nothing bad happened and any claims otherwise are earthian/Spacian (delete as appropriate) propaganda.

Actually that's a thing - linguistically, I'm not sure I like Earthian/Spacian as terms? I'd probably default to Earther/Space - my instinct is that in general, people are going to fall back on shorter names for things (I don't have anything hard to back that up, I'm a writer, not a linguist, but my impression is that people at least in English favor short syllable terms)

Utterly minor, just a thing that was tickling at my brain

Earthnoid/Spacenoid is still my favorite go to

That was something introduced by English scripts for some of the OVA series set during the One Year War.

Honestly what I liked most about early food wars is that Soma's whole ethos is "you don't need to be a god at cooking or super rich to make good food" and it's backed up by the first half of the series being accompanied by actual recipes you can do to eat all the stuff people are making in the series. There's even actual chefs on Youtube, ChefPK especially, using those recipes to recreate dishes and they are delicious. I think the peak of that was during the curry round of the tournament arc. All of those curries looked like something that a normal person could make given the instructions and time.

Like this one! I still want to make and eat it!

The consultant chef was secretly the heart and soul of the manga. Soma's gimmick was he grew up cooking at the special-of-the-day diner at a shopping center and as a result was a good creative chef. When it was time to throw down he would go to a normal grocery store with a limited budget and whip up a good sauce or something instead of just throwing $500 A5 wagyu steaks or using a liquid nitrogen machine. The consultant chef made all those recipes work so you too could make all of his dishes with stuff found at your local grocery store on a reasonable budget which was really cool and helped make the writing more believable. Once she left it turned into a who can use this rare ingredient better fest it's weekly rating tanked and the writing pivoted into underground mafia chefs cooking with guns and chainsaws and an evil Soma in a last ditch attempt to claw it's way back up to avoid getting canceled.

Basically takes place 80 years after the original series, without Nue's involvement, basically Big West doing their own thing(which is more or less the standard after the original run).

I haven't seen it, but it's most memorable for the gorgeous artwork:

    The smallest, briefest push-back.

A shattered and divided Corpo-space empire feuding with an economically destroyed Earth is...pretty much UC post Zeon, but instead of the Earth Fed trying to run everything and failing you have backstabbing corporate interests trying to gobble up the pie in the background of a high key race war.

I think it could absolutely maintain multiple series as a setting.

It's also got a lot of places it could go with exploring the technology side - this setting could theoretically hit fully synthetic pilots and similar weird Sci Fi stuff, which could be a very strong avenue to explore.

There's also potential to do more detailed looks at intra solar system colonization - various series have touched on humans living elsewhere in the solar system, but we've never really had super in depth looks at that (even IBO didn't actually dig into Mars that deeply).

    There's real potential!
